THE BEST DAMN POETRY CONTEST EVER

ZAYRA AND I ARE ABOUT TO PULL THE TRIGGER AND ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS. BEFORE WE DO I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT ALL OF THE FINALIST POEMS WERE EXCELLENT AND DESERVED JUST MORE THAN RECOGNITION . . . HENCE ALL WILL RECEIVE A COPY OF 'CROWNED COMPASSION' BY ZAYRA (PLEASE DO THANK HER, BECAUSE IT WAS HER THAT SUGGESTED IT). IF YOU ALREADY HAPPEN TO HAVE A COPY OF 'CROWNED COMPASSION' WE WILL FIGURE SOMETHING ELSE OUT.

Jaden & Zayra

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 18, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 900, Silver: 400, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 5 people
  • Final notes:
Thank you everyone who took the time to enter. I'm not sure if the objective of this contest was completed, but I am sure we got some damn fine poems on display. (Was hoping for about a hundred entries or so.) In any case, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pieces.

Zayra and I chose 'YAWN' as the Gold trophy winner because the author's entries were extremely expressive, well-written, and if I were running an AP Journal today, would have no trouble publishing them using that format. To you my friend, whoever you are, will receive points, two journals, 1 chapbook, Crowned Compassion and also (at the last minute Zayra decided) the CD 'Sleep in the Sea Tonight With Me'. In all, about $60 worth of prizes.

The 'HOME' entries were also very good. In fact, Zayra and I spent some time debating if this one should have received the Gold, but hey, Silver is not bad in a contest like this. I hope they find their way into some publication in the future. Enjoy your many prizes.

For Bronze we both choose "Futile- Slow Dancing with Neruda" . . . I actually liked the 'Futile' poem better than the other, but Zayra liked "Slow Dancing with Neruda" . . . hence it was a fairly easy pick for third place.

    The Honorable Mentions:

'Keeping His Word' was excellent. I like longer poems and the effort put behind this one was obvious. You'll receive the CD 'Crowned Compassion'.

I loved 'Golden grape-vine' however, it was only one entry. If there were two poems instead of one it probably would have received real consideration for placing. A CD to you.

'A Sonnet to My Lady's Eyes' and 'Flea Market' were good poems too. CD's to you as well.

Please IM me with your mailing address and I'll get the prizes out to you soon as possible.

    Thanks LOADS!

I received the book and the Cd's in the mail yesterday. The book made me proud to be in the Book Project that is going on now. I can't wait until it is off the presses. As I was reading the poetry in the book, I realized how many of those poets are not around right now. That makes me sad. I came to AP shortly after the book was published, and delighted in their poetry. As a matter of fact they were all good teachers of the craft.

The Cd's are marvelous! I mean that with all the strength I have to voice my feelings. Zayra has been one of the greatest inspirations for me here at AP. I am so impressed, and encouraged that I go into the studio on Friday to record my very first CD. I am elated! Thanks for the trophy, points, and the gifts. I am so enjoying them.

    Much Love ♥

    Renee
