EDITED
I'm adding six days on to this contest because the move is MUCH bigger than I thought and why punish those amazing poets just because I couldn't judge in a timely manner?
SO - anybody who wishes to still enter, please do - as by the 8th I should have an idea of where my life is going for the next several years (is a week long enough for that?) heheh....
enjoy the contest!
Did my title catch your attention? I HOPE SO!
Okay here we go -
Lots of ideas, lots of options, lots of good work (I hope)
FIRST - Prewrites are allowed if they truly fit in with the options available.
NEXT - oNlY uSe ThIs TyPe Of TyPiNg If It MaKeS tHe PoEm BeTtEr.
LAST - Please give me quality work. I prefer free verse but if you're huge on form, meter and rhyme, I won't DQ over it *happy* I'm not THAT mean. Just give me the best work you can and we'll go from there!
Okay, here we go!
1. Show me what it's like to be a mailbox.
2. Convince me you have never cheated on a husband/boyfriend/wife/girlfriend.
3. You are going through a caffeine (or other drug/alcohol) withdrawal. Use imagery to show me what it feels like.
4. Be inspired by one of the following Quotes:
"Govern thy life and thoughts as if the whole world were to see the one, and read the other." -- Thomas Fuller
"A wise man learns by the mistakes of others, a fool by his own." -- Latin Proverb
"I demolish my bridges behind me...then there is no choice but to move forward." -- Firdtjof Nansen
5. Be inspired by one of the following pictures:
(found at http://www.allzah.com/art/images/Art_word_tiles.jpg)
6. Find a globe or world map, close your eyes, point to a spot and write an acrostic of the town/city/state/small country you pointed to.
7. Be inspired by one of the following Titles - do not read the piece, just be inspired by the title. (all titles found at http://poetry.poetryx.com/poems/ ) -- p.s. you don't have to use the title as the title, in fact, I'd prefer you don't - just put it in your comments or after the piece ex: "inspired by..."
-- “Nature That Washed Her Hands In Milk” by Sir Walter Raleigh
-- “Cúirt An Mhean-Oíche (The Midnight Court)” by Brian Merriman
-- “Yellow Summer-Throat” by Hilda Conkling
-- “Gaein And Comin” by George MacDonald
-- “Absence disembodies—so does Death” by Emily Dickinson
-- “Written After Swimming From Sestos To Abydos” by George Gordon Lord Byron
Okay - those are the options - should be enough for everybody to find some sort of inspiration.
I usually like to hold short contests so this one will be over August 1 unless the stress of the move to Fargo, ND takes more out of me than I think it will. But we'll see!!!
Ok to redo the rules:
FIRST - Prewrites are allowed if they truly fit in with the options available.
NEXT - oNlY uSe ThIs TyPe Of TyPiNg If It MaKeS tHe PoEm BeTtEr.
LAST - Please give me quality work. I prefer free verse but if you're huge on form, meter and rhyme, I won't DQ over it *happy* I'm not THAT mean. Just give me the best work you can and we'll go from there!
oh yeah - P.S. EXTRA RULE
Please put the option number and name (eg. 1 mailbox/2 not a cheater/4 quote by .../7 Title & Author ... you get the idea) in your comments or at the bottom of your poem so I can be sure to judge fairly. Also - since i'm not Gold it has to be anonymous but i don't play favorites anyway so no worries if you respond to comments and such.
SWEET! Have a good time and don't stress - just give me good stuff! *happy*
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 8, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 1 people
- Final notes: Hi there, folks.
I have to say - arranging the top four has been a very difficult decision. There are so many reasons why there should be 2 first place and 2 second place, but unfortunately I don't have those kinds of points (and I don't think I can do that anyway).
The top four are pieces that gave that extra OOMPH and really spoke to me.
Congrats to all,
Contest Winners
