Talking In Bed

Talking in bed ought to be easiest,
lying together there goes back so far,
an emblem of two people being honest.
Yet more and more time passes silently.
Outside, the wind's incomplete unrest
builds and disperses clouds in the sky,
and dark towns heap up on the horizon.
None of this cares for us. Nothing shows why
at this unique distance from isolation
it becomes still more difficult to find
words at once true and kind,
or not untrue and not unkind.

Philip Larkin

the must have list:

preference of free verse
subtle end-line rhyme if you must
subtle alliteration
imagery
no more than 50 lines
spell check

Due to the significant number of poems that Larkin wrote with end-line rhyme, I have revised the must-have list to include SUBTLE end-line rhyme. If the content isn't strong enough that the lyrical nature of the poem takes over - it may very well weigh against the piece when it comes down to judging. Content /imagery and the overall story of the piece is key.

with the diverse and wonderful entries for this contest - I thought it would be impossible to judge. still, there has to be slightest preference or we wouldn't be human.

Oh an odd wee poem by Larkin, Mr. EndRhyme himself. This sets off all kinds of responses in me, actually. Hope you get some fascinating entries.

I actually did go in and revise to include those that can end line rhyme with subtle use of that "tool". Granted, Larkin did so phenomenonly as his theme/ content was so strong that I think that took over his poetry verses the distinct rhyme through many of his pieces.

I'm hoping I didn't confuse matters more - as I tend to do. lol

Now, why would you ever want to talk in bed -- well, except to say "honey, NO, that's not where it goes!" Instructions are entirely permissible, nothing else is. Oh, and it's also OK to provide commentary on watching a porn together. You know "those aren't real, and that position was done with mirrors." Important stuff -- and both very kind and unkind. See, that was what Larkin needed. More porn. Then he would have been rhyming away all over again, like

    I saw Ron Jeremy
and heard my wife laugh --
    I looked under the sheets
    and realized my gaff.

Next time I'll try body lotions
or buy a bottle of wine --
    something that will at least
bring wood to my sad pine.

Seriously, great contest Kim. I haven't done anything in a century. Perhaps I might use this great idea as leverage to get my poetic juices flowing again.
