letter to a baby

my sister is due on the 19th. and I was thinking about how excited I am. but also, in a way, I want to stay as far away as possible... so that nothing of myself rubs off onto the baby.

and what I want is for you to write a poetic letter to a baby. with what you know now, what would you say to a new life?
or what you feel/felt/will feel when you heard about their arrival.
specific or general
encouraging or not.
present
or future
or what you would've said had you the chance..

just no abortion or abuse poems
[it can be an aspect in your piece, but no persuasive essays please.]

(apparently it's contest season.

    3.scramble up
    4. to the daughter I'll never know
    5. seed's continuum
    6. I love you

take the time to read the finalists' pieces.. it's worth it!

    My poem for this contest:
    ---------------------------------------
"to the peddler inside my sister's stomach"

    I knew you
before you had time to grip oxygen on your own.
A precious stone cocooned in a body
    more delicate.

Your arrival has been like that of a train far away on the tracks,
    when it seems almost impossible,
    invisible,
    and we all grow impatient,
but you approached with a lightning so beautiful
and you steal my breath from the pit
    of my existence.

I'll gladly give you anything I can,
so when you obtain the motions,
    don't hesitate to approach me,

    because
I've never felt so connected to someone I've never met.

And you are the fruit of generations of
a love so clean and planned.

So maybe my parents were created
    and meant to meet
to birth your mother, and your parents fell in love
    to set your DNA.
The firstborn of two firstborns who will radiate
    and live.

Ellie, as you arrive, I'd love to set you
in a heaven away from the poor judgment
    becoming us daily,
but I know with just your presence,
you prove that the world can become

    a little clearer
    and much more important...

LOL. I just put together a scrapbook to my new grandson. I wrote two specific pieces for that book. I will see if I can come up with another one for you.

"so that nothing of myself rubs off onto the baby."

That is always good to avoid with babies.

I had wanted to enter this - but unfortunately when I clicked on the title of the competition to open it, I simply got a "page not available" notice - not only on this, but on all the competitions. It appears to have been a software fault with the Allpoetry site - and a supplementary notice said it had been reported and would be fixed. But by the time it WAS fixed, the competition had been judged. Surely I am not the only person affected. You have not yet judged the competition - could you not open it again for another day. This is fairly easy to do...just go to the list of competitions on your "page", click on it, click on "edit", and then change the date by one day - to close on 4 August. (Or even later if you like."

I just spend time reading many of these entries; they are so poignant. I was surprized at how sad many are though. I thought the focus was on welcoming a new child more, I guess.
