This is the first time I'm hosting a contest since I've joined AP. So I want to make it purposeful.
Although there hasn't been any major war among nations since the Second World War, there has been numerous local conflicts between nations and civil wars within a nation itself. Every country has their own details about the horrendity of wars: child soldiers, loss of human lives, destruction of property, etc. My own country, Nepal, is slowly trying to emerge out of a decade long internal conflict. But I don't want to be involved in describing about it. Just write me a war poem that describes the psychology of people caught in the midsts of conflict or any general theme concerned with war.
Rules:
1. No flag waving fanatic nationalism of any kind.
2. All types of rhymings are allowed except end-rhymes.
3. No typos.
Generally I prefer poems that are playful with language and are a bit thoughtful. I'll comment on each poem, unless I find it pointless to do so. So impress me with your talent!!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on July 3, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 150, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 2 people
- Final notes: now that the contest is over, i would like to announce the winners. it wasn't easy trying to order the winners because each one was equally good; and i would to suggest the winners to publish their poems in some journal, rather than let it sink to oblivion in this site.
i have tried to be as objective as possible while judging. the top three poems were chosen because of their craftsmanship and their emotional poignancy. all three are remarkable for their uncliched writing and the use of undertones.
Gold: In Memory of Guardsman McGillivray
Silver: Father Herman
Third: war
Honorable Mentions:
The Cold War Diner
Nineteen Sixty Nine
Congratulations to the winners. As for others who didn't make it, your participation has been much appreciated, without which this contest wouldn't have been successful.

i am really glad at the quality of work that has been entered for this contest. i'm trying to get through the poems and comment on each one. i hope to finish with the commenting within a day or two and then give my verdict. i know very well that making the decisions will be tough. but may the best person win!!!

Thanks for the bronze a\nd points

I am unsure if it was purposeful because it has happened before but you did not comment on my piece and it happens to be the only piece that you did not comment. I find it slightly rude but understandable if you didnt mean to do so.

Thank you so much for the honorable mention!
