WHY DO I WRITE POEMS

I am overloaded with points. They are the gracious gifts from the members of the AP Family which I can hardly repay. I hope they will graciously accept my invitation to participate in my first ever contest by entering not-too-long poems, say roughly of 50 lines, on the theme 'WHY DO I WRITE POEMS'. Here is an example, the translation of a famous song by a famous poet -
AND IN WONDER AND AMAZEMENT I SING

The sky is full of the sun and the stars
The world is full of life
Among all these I have found a place
And in wonder and amazement I sing.
The world is swayed
By eternity’s rushing tides
Rising and falling
I have felt its tug in my blood
Racing through my veins
And in wonder and amazement I sing.
While walking in the woodlands
With my feet I have touched the blades of grass
I have been startled by the flowers’ fragrance
They have all maddened my mind
The gifts of gladness and joy
Are strewn all around
And in wonder and amazement I sing.
I have pricked my ears
I have opened my eyes
I have bared my heart to the world
In the midst of the known
I have sought the unknown
And in wonder and amazement I sing.

[Transcreation of the song – Akash bhara surya tara biswabhara pran – by Rabindranath Tagore.]
It is needless to say, it is not for copying.
The closing date is 3rd July, but may be closed after 30 entries.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on June 20, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100
  • Final notes:
Hosting a contest for the first time has been a rewarding experience. According to the rules only three winners had to be chosen out of total 20 entries. I wish I could choose a few more, for most of the entries have been of a very high order. I hope all participants, irrespective of their standings in the contest, have enjoyed the fun. I must thank all from the core of my heart for making this event a success.
