Nationalism

To be judged by June 3.

What does nationalism mean to you?

1. Black background, white text, left allign.
2. No pictures.
3. No rhyming poetry.

Poems which show some thought, ask questions, attempt to say something rather than merely describe, and/or show cynicism are likely to tick my boxes.

That's it.

301 points for gold.
Other quality entries will be rewarded.

I'm keeping this open for a day or two more in the no doubt vain hope that I can attract something approaching ten entries...

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on June 3, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 301, Silver: 70, Bronze: 30
  • Final notes:
    Gold: Nationalism
    Silver: British Columbia
    Bronze: Real American Patriot

By far the best standard I've had in a contest so far. You people may have even convinced me that holding contests isn't completely futile. The majority of you even read and followed the rules!

Every entry had something to recommend it, but the main problem I had was submissions which were either essays, or internal monologues with line breaks. Whilst I was still interested in the contents of these submissions, this is also a poetry site. I'm not a great fan of nonets or any other trite form, but I had to take the medium into account.

It was very difficult to chose the winners, but in the end the three above stood out. I could spell out their merits again, or better you should click them yourselves, as I'm all commented out now.

To everyone, thanks for entering. It was nice to see some work on here that actually dealt with an adult and important topic...

    Cool contest!

I am so happy that The Mechanism was able to turn out something for your contest. You are very intelligent and socially conscious, and I was really interested to see who would show up to say what. Blind nationalism runs amok in (perhaps just plain runs) this world of ours; it's really disquieting that you didn't get more passionate poetry than you could read in a contest about such an intriguing, relevant topic. People shout, "Down with The Man," then turn around and vote for him. I will refrain from ascending my soapbox, since I know I am preaching to the choir, as it were.

I am honored to have placed under your judgment, and I certainly thank you for the recognition. I also congratulate dianabluelove and Luciferschild on their winning entries.
    Thanks again,
    morgan
