No Line Limits - Free Verse Only- Prompt Inspired - "Toe Tags"

No Line Limits!

Free Verse Only!

Here we go again, this time your prompt is "Toe Tags !

Use This prompt For Inspiration:

Lately I have been thinking about perceptions, such as in toe tags. In specific I was thinking about how men and women wear such tags in society, as if when little girls were born they came complete with a toe tag that stated, "Hi, I'm a girl, I cook, clean and sew and give head once a month" and boys well their tag said "Hi, I'm a boy I have no expectations and I am absolutely useless"!
Now are these the tags that we unconsciously place upon the toes of the sexes, there still seems to be a prevalent amount of this happening, I see it everyday. Today my son actually said no to a chore because it was according to him "women's work", not something that I taught him, or did I, subconsciously, by doing everything for him, has he come to the conclusion that it is a womens job and thus being a man is beneath him.
I know heavy thought, but it gets worse, for if this is the truth, then is it only an extension to take it one step further and reach the conclusion that it is not men who foster these opinions in other men, but mothers, yes are we women the makers of our own demise and the writers of our own tags. Kinda Monkey see, Monkey do, in the end is it not Mothers who need to respect themselves and go outside there own tags to instill correct views into their own children and future generations.

I love metaphors, so if you can, include them!

Make it deep and fantastic!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on April 20, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 5 people
  • Final notes:
Thank you so much for your wonderful entries, they were all fantastic, not a bad one among them making the judging difficult to say the least. In the end the winner was chosen because it reminded me of my own life. It had such a melocholy feel that was so poignant. I fell in love with it. The rest of the entries were equally as beautiful and I thank you all for taking the time to pen them for me. Hope to see you all in my next contest coming up in an hour or so. Hugs, Bunny

Wow... and the sad thing is... I am not sure that we women foster that notion either. I think it is something that society as a whole has been doing over generations upon generations. As a single parent, things are a bit askew as to the "gender roles". My son is with his father and my daughter is with me. Both children are made to do chores and to keep their room clean no matter who they are. Both kids to the chores and yes, Patrick does the dishes and Bren takes out the trash... we alternate as much as possible to avoid that attitude all together. It matters not who does the work, just so long as the work is done well the first time. But thanks for this contest. Not sure if I will enter but you have inspired my next column... lololol.... Ironically, this is just what I needed.... thanks hon!
