Def Slam Jam! We *love* spoken word!

I'm in the mood for Slam! Poetry, and there aren't any slams around here for quite a while. So we're going to have a contest and read the entries aloud.

Write a Slam! poem. If you don't know what that is, wikipedia has a great article explaining it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slam_poetry. You can also google it. I want something fit to be read into a microphone on a stage in the middle of Berkeley. Or maybe in a pub off in a corner of New York.

Anything goes. Granted, Slam! poems tend to focus on a few particular subjects, but I am not picky! Write about whatever touches you at the moment--good, bad, or ugly.

Slam! poetry also tends to be read quickly. This is because people write them fairly long in order to say everything they want to say about a certain subject, and they are only given about three minutes to say it all. I don't care about length. However...if it's really long, I may ask to call you and hear you read it in three minutes. Kidding. Seriously, I don't care about length either.

If you've never heard of Slam! Poetry before, the best way to find out about it is to hear some of it done. Google Def Poetry Jam, or watch it on YouTube. Slam! poetry is everywhere, all over the net. It's fun.

Don't worry if your poem looks funny written down. I understand that. It just has to sound great when read aloud.

SO...for the rules:
I don't really care. Anything goes. I just want to read a Slam! Poem. And yes...these will be read aloud in order to judge their effectiveness. If you want to write more than one, go for it. The only thing I ask is that you be respectful to everyone involved in this contest.

Good luck and have fun! Message me with any questions.

Well, I said anything goes. So I'm thinkin' about the whole pre-writes thing...if you want to take a poem you've already written and revamp it to make it better--do a little creative editing and the whole bit, then you can just copy and paste it into a new entry and call it new. I'm okay with that.

    LOVE!

Oh wednesday night Slams at the Starry Plough!! What would I do without you!? HAHA! Bay Area girl here, who has spent more then one night contemplating the meaning of the universe and all its hilarious cruelties at local slams! Good to see a Slam contest here!

Sadly, Im not greatly talented in the slam department, but my twin sister on the other hand is FAB! You should check out some of her stuff!

    thanks!

I agree - it is a great pity that you do not want prewritten poetry.

And I note with concern the fact that you consider "Wikipedia" a reliable source.

I have to say that, from my experience, it is not.
It was brought to my attention last year that it had attributed to me a VERY poor translation, which was NOT my work... and I had a great deal of trouble in getting them to remove this incorrect attribution.

I already commented and said that if you wanted to revamp an old prewrite and make it better--like do a little editing and see what you can do with it (and you can almost ALWAYS make something better, especially with slams), then you could copy and paste it into a new template and call it new.
And I do NOT consider Wiki a reliable source at all. I'm a teacher, and I know better. However, I have read the article about Slam Poetry! and find it very informative and detailed. I can back up the information that I read on there with the books I have, as well as people I know who are reliable sources. I would never send someone to a website for information without verifying its accuracy first.

Thank you for your message. However I have only just picked it up now... too late to enter.

And I must say that I feel extremely reluctant to start tinkering with the poems which have won me slams, and which are now a well-recognized part of my repertoire.

(It is one thing to change something because one gets a new idea - or in response to current events) but another to do it just to enter a competition...)
