Music, Art, Drama and Dance: An Arts Advocacy Contest

For this contest, I'd like you to write a poem showing your support for the arts (one of the forms or all of them).

Due to poor funding, many arts programs are vanishing from our schools and other part of society, and that's a real shame because the arts have had such a profound influence on me, as well as many others. March 12th- 13th is National Arts Advocacy week, so I thought this would be a good time to have this contest.

I'm considering sharing some of these poems with an Arts advocacy organization, or using them in arts advocacy in some way.
Arts advocacy organizations argue that arts help you do better at school and make children more likely to succeed at math or something like that. Though this may be true, I think think personal accounts are way more powerful and relevant.

I really look forward to some inspiring entries

Rules:
1) You may enter up to 3 poems per person.
2) Please put the option you chose in the author's notes.
3) Any form
4) Keep it under 150 lines
5) Be creative, personal and original.
6) I want inspiring poetry that touches me on a deep level
7) have fun
8) No bashing. I would however like if you read other entries and left comments

Options
1) Write a personal poem about how your involvement in the arts has had a profound effect on you. Make it thoughtful and deep. Choose one art form.
- Music
- Dance
- Visual Arts
- Theater

2) Write a poem showing the interconnectedness between one or more of the arts, and relate that to the human condition.

3) Write about one or more of the arts as a powerful universal form of communication.

4) Write a poem about any one of the arts and how involvement in it can be healing.

5) Imagine you run into a person who wants to cut arts programs from all school programs and all facets of society, a person who doesn't see the value of the Arts. Write an arts advocacy poem that you might share with them.

6) Write a poem inspired by one of these quotes:

"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."
-Aristotle

"Without freedom, no art; art lives only on the restraints it imposes on itself, and dies of all others."
-Albert Camus

"All colors are the friends of their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites."
-Marc Changall

"Why do two colors, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this? No. Just as one can never learn how to paint."
-Pablo Picasso

"True creativity often starts where language ends."
-Arthur Koestler

"Creative activity could be described as a type of learning process where teacher and pupil are located in the same individual."
-Arthur Koestler

"Acting is nothing more or less than playing. The idea is to humanize life."
-Jeff Goldblum

"A beautiful thing never gives so much pain as does failing to hear and see it."
-Michelangelo

"A painting is never finished - it simply stops in interesting places."
-Paul Gardner

"Art is a lie that helps us to realize the truth."
Pablo Picasso

"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time."
-Thomas Merton, 'No Man Is an Island'

"Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life."
-Pablo Picasso

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."
Pablo Picasso

"I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music."
Joan Miro

I will be commenting on all entries before I judge the contest even though I may not comment right away.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on April 1, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 4 people
  • Final notes:
Sorry I took so long to judge. I had an opera production this week and I just finished so things were pretty hectic.
Thanks for all these heartfelt wonderful entries. Everything I've read was great and I hope many more people read these arts advocacy poems. This was a very hard contest to judge because they were all beautiful in different ways.

    Thanks for entering!
I'll look into sharing some of these with an arts advocacy organization.

Great idea for a contest. I once wrote a quote about painting..."It's not the painting that makes a masterpiece, but the hand that strokes the brush." Lovely idea for a contest. I am a big fan of pretty much every style of Arts. I also am taking Media in college, so I am keen on that side of things also. Good luck with the contest.

Bless you. I think it is a wonderful idea to submit poems you think may help the cause to your local council on the arts, to school boards, to your local library, etc.

One of the most satisfying programs I have been involved with is called Arts Alive. It is for elementary school children and completely voluntary. I'm not sure if it was a locally grown program or what but basically every month a parent or volunteer introduces a new artist to a classroom - their life, their work, their inspiration. And then often the children get an opportunity to experiment with the art type. For instance, when I do Michaelangelo, I have the kids tape paper to the undersides of their desks and lay on the floor and draw up. But also, we've had local artists such as bag pipe players come in and talk about their art -- anyway, you can see it is a passion.

Good luck and thanks for pointing out these dates. I didn't know.

    Lisa

This a great concept for a contest. Arts are very important to have in school. It teaches children to be creative and think innovatively. I think that art should be required just as math and english. It is speculated that if you were to use art to teach math more children would be interested in learning it. I will see if I can come up with a piece for this noble cause. Thank you for creating this contest. Good luck in judging it.

I agree too. More creativity would make subjects like math more enjoyable and the arts are often neglected in schools and they are just as important.

Thank you so much for the nice comments. It's odd that you should mention math because I am a future teacher in Mathematics. I want to use the beauty that surronds us in addition to math to create new lesson plans that students will find more interesting. Like the arts, mathematics can be fun and is vital in our world and future.
        Thank you again

    Great Contest Idea

I was not sure how to create an entry for a contest that supports such an important issue as the arts. I hope my piece, "Bottles of Time" shows the importance and passion you have for the arts. I used an art piece to create my poem. However, my poem also reflects on the music industry. The late great Jim Croche wrote his last song, "Time in a Bottle" before he passed. Eventhough the song was unfinished, it became his legacy. Again, thanks for creating such an important and new concept for a contest.

    This is great

I was in band all throughout Middle school and high school and my musical director was amazing. I still keep in touch with him he's amazing and I've written several poems about how he and his music program has changed my life!

I know what you mean. It is ashame people don't see arts as a valuable aspect of their lives. They don't know what they are missing. I was wondering if you could extend the contest a couple more days. I want to enter but I won't be able to write something until tomorrow evening.

This is an amazing idea for a contest. Too bad I saw this contest a little too late. It really is depressing that they keep cutting funding. The arts are my life and I don't know what would happen if they cut it all together. Please stay active in the arts and always show your support for it. Good luck with your contest.
