I Love Short Poems

Welcome to another contest.

Beyond a doubt I love short and expressive poems more than any other type.
So in this contest, this is what I’m after.

You may write it on any subject and it must be 12 lines or under (not including line breaks).

It would be a bonus if the write used an abstract and concise format and language as I’m fond off these too.

Free verse or rhyme is fine either way.

Something that makes me think, makes me want to reread it, and that enthrals me will be the winning poem.

The greatness of short poems is showing power in so few words; this is a real test of talent.

Although haiku are great, and would technically fit the criteria, the least amount of these entered the better, thanks.

You may enter up to three times.
However, I ask you put the titles of other poems you’ve entered in your authors comments. This is because if I’m stuck between two poems when judging, in the interest of being fair and everyone being given only one award I may use this information. In my last contest, I gave gold and an honourable mention to the same poet, and although they deserved it, I chose that honourable mention poem over another persons poem, who in the end didn’t receive any prize. Thanks for understanding.

Rules:

1. 12 lines and under, only! (Line breaks not included)
2. Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar must be used.
3. Entries must be original, and non cliché. Any subject (within reason) is allowed.
4. Only enter haiku if it is an incredible and outstanding write.
5. You may enter up to three times. May I ask that if you do enter more than once could you leave the titles of the other poems entered in your authors comments. See above for more details.
7. Please put "short poems" in your authors comments as proof you've read the rules.
6. Be courteous to other entrants.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW ANY OF THE ABOVE RULES WILL SEE YOU DISQUALIFIED AND YOUR ENTRY DELETED FROM THE CONTEST. THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING.

Prize amounts and quantities will be updated as the contest progresses.

Ok have fun!

Update: I find it somewhat amusing that despite the fact I have rule seven in bold and underlined people still fail to follow that rule. I stand by my disqualification statement however, and I have removed all the entries (there were several) that didn't follow the rule. A rule is a rule. Thanks to the current entrants who had the decency to read the rules and follow them.

Also, I will be adding my favourites to the finalists as I read them. The finalists will then be narrowed down to the overall winners.

Thanks to everyone for entering though.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 11, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 80, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
This was a hard contest to judge!!

Thanks to everyone that entered. I think I've commented on all entries. If you find I didn't comment on yours though, please let me know so I can.

The winning poems were chosen just because of the way they made me feel. And for The way they captured, and sometimes twisted my mind. There were many other poems I liked (all the ones previously in my finalist list) but I don't have enough points to give something like 10 honourable mentions!!

    Congratulations to the winners.
    Thank you all for entering.
