For American Women Concerned About Their Rights!!!

Did you know that the Equal Rights Amendment has not been ratified and added to the Constitution? It is possible that a woman is not elgible to become president. The amendment has passed in 30 states, but still needs to pass in 8 more to make a 2/3 majority of 38 states.

This is for the pros and cons of passing the equal rights amendment, of ratifying it and adding it to the constitution. What is your opinion? Should women be guaranteed equal rights under the Constitution?

For more information about the ERA, go to this link:

Poems or essays.
One entry per writer.
Standard rules apply.

You have a voice, this is an opportunity to use it.

Men are invited to participate as well. This is after all about equal rights.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 12, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 50, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
It would be a pleasure to award each of you the gold because I enjoyed all your entries. However, it doesn't work that way. Thanks for participating in my contest. "Equal Rights Amendment" seemed to cover the contest topic best. "pie-tasting" was a very enjoyable piece of satire. It brought the point home. I like the attitude in "It Is My Right". "Equal Rights" demonstrates women's role in history. "Girls Can Do Anything" speaks of women's potential in today's world. Catfish Constitution is just plain funny. Thanks again.

      Thanks, ea

It was you that reminded me about this. I had forgotten it. Hopefully we can have a woman president, but the Constitution does say a man of 35 years or more. I am certain that Hillary is aware of this. I don't necessary want Hillary to be president, but I think she should have the right to become president. There is quite a history to this amendment.

just one lawyer's opinion, but women are already guarenteed equal rights under the Constitution and the Civil Rights Act, and the case law interpreting them. The ERA is superfluous at this point.

personally I think everyone already has equal rights, I think the problem is that folks just don't exercise those rights, what makes one gender more valuable in the human race over another? And exactly who is it that decides that? HMMMM.... I doubt I will enter this contest as I don't wish to make enemies on this site and I doubt many will wish to hear my opinion on this matter, am sure it will start a debate and I just don't wish to do that. I wish you much luck with your contest. God Bless

      Privileges, not rights

Actually the government can take away all your rights in an instant, including the right to life. Now with the new laws Bush has been able to pass, due process is not even required. Or you could say that due process can now be just a whim.

Actually, most of the time the application of law differs from person to person and situation to situation much of the time. Equal rights and equal treatment are really not very strongly protected and definitely not insured for males or females.

atty-poet points out that by case law equality is being achieved, however; that is actually incorrect. That helps to interpret the law in given situations and different outcomes occur. What is wrong with trying to insure equal rights constitutionally?

      Have you read the amendment?

Thanks for commenting, but I hope you will enter something pro or con. I am getting a lot of comments, but no entries. At this rate, I won't have to spend any points.

Evidently not too many of us are concerned with or maybe just don't care about our rights. I will understand if you pull the contest for lack of enteries.

I appreciate your observation and comment. Yes, I would have liked more entries, but I will host the contest with the entrants I have. I like having controversial contests as they are sometimes interesting. There were some interesting discussions about this one. It was worth while.
