Quote Me On That

Hello people!

I am making a new contest, and I hope you're excited. Yes, I've only had one contest previously. I realize that. However, I am now working on a series of contests based on this one! So, without further ado, I present you my contest.

This is an options contest. I have gathered several diverse movies from which you can chose quotes to write on. I want poems using quotes from one of the movies listed below.

I'm adding the movies and their genres below. I would love for everyone to read the movies AND the examples I've given you. That will help you understand what I'm looking for. Now, let's look at the movies that I have added to this contest.

Genre: SciFi
Movie: Star Wars, A New Hope
Quote: "The circle is now complete."-Darth Vader
Example Poem:
"The circle is now complete,"
she said, grinning happily
as the last child linked hands.
The three-year-olds laughed
and moved in tandem--all but one.
"Han, you have to move this way,"
she called, pointing to the right.
The circle moved again, voices raised in song.
"Ring around the rosey..."

*See what I mean?*

Genre: Comedy
Movie: The Princess Bride
Quote: "I'm not a witch; I'm your wife!"-Miracle Max's wife
Example Poem:
The hunchback walked slowly,
moving down the darkened sidewalk
with steps labored by age.
His white hair was smoothed back,
and the wrinkles on his forehead were pinched.
A hand on his forearm halted him,
and he turned to see an equally elderly,
stooped woman with a long black cape.
A black kitten in her arms,
she grinned up at him,
and the cat hissed.
Startled, he shouted, "Get away, witch!"
Standing upright, she yelled back,
"I'm not a witch; I'm your wife, you dolt!"
Somewhere down the street,
vague strains of a chant reached them.
"Trick or treat, smell my feet..."

*Now you're beginning to get my point, right?*

Genre: Fantasy
Movie: Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King
Quote: "I am no man."-Eowyn
Example Poem:
The sign on the entryway
was clear;
the women, the Amazons
would accept no falsities.
"No man may enter these lands;
heed this law or
forsake you life."
Noman smiled at his companions;
"It's a very good thing
they specified, don't you think,"
he asked with a smirk.
The men eyed him uneasily
as he said,
"Well, at least when
they catch me, I can say,
'I am Noman.'"
And off he went.

*Ok, kind of a poor example, but it will be clear when you get to the rules.*

Genre: Romance
Movie: Hitch
Quote: "Basic Principles... there are none."-Hitch
Example Poem:
She struggled to explain
the equation's solution,
telling the students
how "x" really represented
the square root of 144
but only if they could
figure out how "y"
equalled 72.
John stretched,
envigorated from his nap,
raised his hand,
and said,
"So, this is stupid. All you're saying is,
'Basic principles... there are none.'"
The sputtering teacher
vehemently argued
but stood speechless minutes later
as the bell rang,
and the students rushed into the hall.

*You can probably come up with something better, but that's the point, I think.*

Genre: Animated Film
Movie: Shrek

*Ok, enough of that. I think I've shown you the point. You can come up with your own poem for this one. *

Now, here are the requirements for your entries. Please read these and follow them carefully so you won't be knocked out of the contest.

1. Pick from the movies I've listed above. Please note that you can use different movies from among the series listed above (i.e. Star Wars).
2. Pick a quote or a series of quotes from the movies to base your poems on. If you pick a series of quotes, please be sure to use only quotes that come consecutively; do not patch together quotes from different parts of the movie.
3. In your author's notes, please list the genre, movie and quote as I have showed above. Also, attribute the quote to whichever character said it.
4. Put creative titles to your poems. I DO NOT want you to put your movie, quote, or character as the title for the piece.

Onto the rules:

1. Basic stuff, no chatspeak, no all caps, no sticky caps. That stuff gets tedious to read.

2. No erotica! No cursing! If you do not follow these rules, I will not read your entries. Besides, my account only shows "*bunny*" for cursing anyways. So, don't do it.

3. Choose only from the movies listed above! I do not want entries on any other movie. They will get you disqualified.

4. Write any way you wish, but note that many of the quotes from these movies lend themselves to humor and can be written that way easily.

5. If you alter a quote slightly, make sure that I can still see the original quote in it. *See my example from "Lord of the Rings" above.* If you are unsure about how to do this, ask me.

6. Please don't write me a book. I don't have much time on my hands. A good story poem that keeps me reading if fine, but if it goes slowly and doesn't get to the point quickly, I will stop reading.

7. Make sure to follow the requirements above! I will be checking to see that you do that, so don't disappoint me.

Finally, contest notes:

I am planning to run another contest like this one with the winners of this contest. I will choose either 5 or 10 people to continue in the next part of the contest depending on how many entries I get. I haven't decided quite how I'll work the next contest, but I will let you know as time goes on.

I've only included 5 genres of movies because I can't judge between more than that. Since this isn't really a tribute to any one movie, I don't think it will be a problem. I'm also only allowing 30 entries, so don't hesitate to enter.

I like humor, which is partially why I picked some of the movies I did. You don't have to write humorous poetry, but if you make me laugh, I'll really enjoy it. Besides, laughter is good for the soul. However, I am not judging on how much I laughed, so don't worry if you write a serious poem.

By the way, you don't actually have to have a person in your poem quoting the quote you use. As long as I can see the quote and know which one you're using, it's fine.

I hope everything makes sense. Let me know if it doesn't! Thanks so much, and have fun with the contest!

-Rae

Contest Update
I'm extending the contest because I'd very much like more entries. So, I promise to get to this as soon as I can, and March 10 will be the beginning of my Spring Break. That works perfectly for judging this contest! Thanks to everyone who's already entered, and I hope to see more people here soon!
