I gather friends, like feathers, to add to a cloak I hold around me.
A contest to hopefully stimulate inspiration of how birds can be metaphors for different kinds of friendships.
Choose one of these and write a poem using the personality of the bird for the personality of the friendship.
Important: Each of you choose a different bird so no poem is about the same bird as another has chosen to write about. Check to see if the bird type has been chosen and choose one no one else has. I will let you know if you have used one someone else did.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on January 30, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 150, Bronze: 75, Honorable mention: 2 people
- Final notes: I thought it might be interesting to you if I put a little bit, that I know about animal personalities, on your choice of birds…and friendship’s place in that choice:
Gifts of the Owl friend – coming from the second Spirit Path of the East, this is the listener, not just the seer. It represents a friendship that is dual in purpose, there in shadow or in light, there in your joyful moments and your most grievous. This type of friend is definitely not a fair weather friend…this type of friendship is one for all seasons. Magic is part of this relationship. This type of friend is one who is intuitive to your many strengths and vulnerabilities. This friendship is one that keeps you up late and has jammie parties and late night discussions about deep magic and wisdom.
Gifts of the Hawk Friendship – The hawk is known as the little eagle. This kind of friend will call you to rise and to soar, always the encouraging word. They re the kind of friends you can go too to help you clarify what you mean, what other things mean, and to help you understand yourself in the grand design of things. They handle things with grace and dignity and can teach you to do the same. They are friends who have been tested by fire and have much to offer in their own healing. They are also dreamers, but more, they seem to find ways to meet their dreams and dream for you as well. Their faith is not tied to one thing; they take the best of many ways of believing and understanding. They share this with you and it lightens your burdens about religion and soul. They, do, though, seem to withdraw at times. It is not that they are moody, but they are isolating themselves from interference in decision-making. While they are encouraging, they do sometimes want others to catch on to what they know more quickly.
Gifts of the Hummingbird friend: Hummingbird friendships come from the first Spiritual Path of the East. They are giving friends who nurture. They can balance your moods. They are inspiring to you because of their endurance. They have the ability to energize and inspire you. They also help you to clarify your thoughts. This friend is a hummer. Not much of life gets them down so they do not weigh heavily on you. They are very much peacemakers in your life. They also add beauty, the sacred, mystery, healing and joy to your life. Oh, I might add, they can be feisty.
The Gift of the Robin Friendship: To your life, this friend adds hope, beauty and song.
The robin will make you stop what you are doing because you are so drawn to her/his voice and what she/he has to say. They are nature lovers and draw you out to enjoy such.
They get very antsy come spring and are always on the go, dragging you along with them in their pure joy at the new season. Whatever they do, they do it intently. What a gift of hope they are for their friends. Just when you need a friend most, their voice is on the line, in the air, in your thoughts.
The Gift of Albatross friendship: This friend is one who you know you are lucky to have in your life. When you are confused, they will blow the fog away. If you slight them, a fog appears and you are left lonely and a little lost without them. The albatross friend will always bring you back to nature, to clear and logical thinking. You will feel quick to defend this friend. As well, this friend is one who will always forgive you your humanness. The albatross friend never holds bitterness. They long for water of its many kinds and will encourage you to use it, be in it, and go to it. This is a friend you hold in high esteem. Hey are also very protective.
The Gift of Swan Friendship: This friend became the beauty of their core self as they matured. Having this friend is to have someone who leads you to more symbolic and mystic thinking. They are food for the soul. They transform you through love and beauty and for their gentle wing they lay over you. They will carry your burdens, and you, if necessary, to give you respite. They are drawn to the mystery of your life as you are to theirs. It is a beautiful relationship. It will sing a song to your heart that will be even more beautiful in its loss. They have surrendered to life and fate, and in this surrender only become more beautiful to you. This friend is a whispered messenger for you. Times, space, life, heaven, are all one to this friend and will lead you to follow your dreams.
The Gift of Chickadee Friendship: This friendship brings such joy to life. It calls you to pay attention to the beautiful things in the big, big world. It is a unique friendship that is special because of it dearness and nearness. Always cheerful, this friend encourages you like a laughing clapping child, to dance to sing in small joys. The gift of the chickadee friend is to delight in truth-seeking.
The Gift of the Macaw friendship: to have a Macaw friend is to have a friend who is very much a caretaker, a homemaker and makes you feel like family. The macaw friend is one who can see both sides to everything and are able to help you be more open. This friend is one who is very much a counselor to you. They balance you with artistic expression. They love to chatter about the arts and lead you to new understandings of the artist in your soul. Of course, the macaw represents soul and this kind of person is always caretaking your soul. He/she will remind you of your immortality. As well, this person is ever the conservationist and will lead you to want to do more to take better care of mother earth.
The Gift of Penguin Friendship: although this kind of friend can be, at times, aggressive, he/she is a down to earth friend. Penguin friendship balances this with contentment at small things and a diligent focus on the far off goals. They can bear snubbing, cold shoulders, and seem to do well in letting old hurts shed off them. Penguin friends are kin-keepers, friendship circle makers and keepers. They revel in crowds and love to be in larger groups. If you have a penguin friendship, you have a loyal and successful friendship. You just have to make sure you help them understand that it is great to be aggressively seeking their goals and that your goals might be different. They men no ill will, they just get caught up in their focus.
The Gift of Sandpiper friendship: sandpiper friendships are that “Joy of Life” friendships. Sandpiper friends are at times so busy being focused and preoccupied they may forget something or miss noticing and you have to get their attention. Not on purpose of course, it is just the way they are. They are very childlike in a wonderful way, easily made happy and their laughs are infectious. They jump from one thing to the next quickly and it keeps an agile friend to keep up to them. They are savers, as well, collectors of friends and interesting things ( to them, at the very least). They love to go to yard sales, second hand stores, auctions, and love looking more than buying. They are not very serious about life but find that things in life interest them more. There are few other serious bones in their bodies. It is not hard to be their friend.
The Gift of the Eagle Friendship: Always, the messenger, this friend has kept you up on everything physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual. He/she touches your life in imaginative ways. You are honored by your honor of this friendship. They help you understand your world; physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual concepts. They have a certain mystery to them, not that they always awe you because sometimes they simply stun you with their difference. They always seem to have a new project or idea or goal going. You, in simple groundedness, may see them flighty in some of their choices. They are a fresh breath of air in your life though and do not always fit in with your other friends. They will be your greatest defender if defending becomes necessary. In the end, their very courage inspires you.
The Dove Friendship: With lightening speed, this friend will come to comfort and support you. They are the ones you enjoy a day at the beach with, ones you will spa with, ones who will offer you new information on the spirit of water and health benefits. This kind of friend sorrows easily and will bring you to tears for them often. Love has hurt them and they accept that downing mournfully. They wish for only peace at any cost, in relationships in the world, in their families and with you. Of anyone, the dove friend will feel your paint he most.
The Bluebird Friendship: Of all the friendships you can have, the bluebird friendship is the most sacred and spiritual. Such peace this friend brings into your life. When we say “true blue” we are speaking of the bluebird friendship. They make even the darkest day a good day. Their beautiful energy lightens your heart, mind, body and spirit. They help you to know about your spiritual self, to be more spiritually involved in this world, to refine your actions to ones more spiritually driven. What sweetness this friend adds to your life is beyond measure. He/she is the one who will pray for you in their way of praying. What an honor to have such a friend. They will sing you beautiful songs from a low branch close by…ever the tender heart, tendering you in the process.
Share these with your friends, if possible. Study the list and find which place your many friends take in this spectrum of bird personalities.

What a beautiful list of the birds with their personality traits, thank you for such a wonderful contest!
-
thank you for the gift
thank you so much for the most precious gift you offered me with your insightful interpretation of chickadee-friendship ... I can only confirm the validity of your words ...
this has been one of my favorite contests so far, in every way ...

ps. strange synchronicity (which I associate with your contest and YOUR spirit-presence bestowed upon each of your contestants
) :
2 days ago, I visited a bird-refuge ... immediately, a beautiful peacock ran towards me
... then, I passed a cage with a huge buzzard inside, staring at me for a long time ... I was so impressed ...
we went there to visit the white doves, who were just peacefully sitting and looking at me ...
and last night, for the first time, an owl came flying into the lime-tree outside my bedroom-window ... and woke me up with her dark voice ... first, I was so scared, but then, I remembered that owl is one of my totem-animals and knew that she wanted to bring me a message of wisdom ...
wow, so many spirit-guides at once ...
all this would not have been possible without your spirit-guidance ...
thank you so much, my most blessed friend,
I love you

Thank you
Congratulations to all winners. A special thank you to the hostess for the contest, but mostly for all of the info provided on all of these birds and what they represent. I happen to be very fond of all our feathered friends (companion and wild)and often find myself being touched and guided by their spirit. Of course through Max (macaw) and Sam (African Grey) who reside with me I have learned that they are so much wiser than we as humans are. Thanks again for the joy and all the effort that went into this contest to provide us with this information
