A metaphorical message to the missing

Please take a moment to actually read the description before entering.

In this contest I'm looking for free verse poems no longer than 15 lines that show through a metaphor that message you have always wanted to tell someone, but they are not there. Perhaps they died. Maybe you have had a disastrous falling out and they don't want to hear from you. Or they've disappeared with no explanation and you don't know where they are and you're worried. Just make sure it is something you'd like to tell a certain person whom you just can't tell anything anymore, and do so through poetic devices and if you can, an extended metaphor would be very appreciated. Internal rhyme is ok, but it needs to be free verse. This can at times end up somewhat easing your pain and as a great piece of poetry.

Philosophical, love, hope, confessions, and such themes are encouraged. And anything else you may think about too. Be creative, original, and sincere.
Please no cutting or suicide unless you can write it in an innovative, beautiful way.
Also, any poetic messages that translate to something along the lines of "you died but I hated you anyway" stand no chance in this contest.

Be inspired and pour your hearts out so neatly and powerfully that everyone will feel the same as you do.

*Just so nobody gets intimidated - this time I'm using the preliminary finalists thing to keep track better of the poems that have caught my attention the first time I read them. That doesn't imply at all that others have no chances, on the contrary, it may help you see what kinds of poems have more chances. Also it doesn't mean that if yours isn't there I didn't like it.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on February 19, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 150, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 7 people
  • Final notes:
First off, I apologize for the delay in judging. I have been busy and distracted, plus I've had to make more effort than with my previous contests as I was amazed at the entries. All those in the finalists list were very hard to put into an order, as I like all those poems very much. Thank you all for entering.

Wonderful idea, Diana. Bookmarking this as I'm sure we all have something to say to those that are "missing" - even if we're just saying it to ourselves. And I like the requirement of short poetry here . Hope you get many great entries.

Thank you, Nicolette. I hope you get a chance to enter. I might extend the deadline if I don't get enough entries anyway, since the topic means much to me.

Congratulations to all the winners! Some of the most profound and beautifully deep poems I have read lately were in this contest. Thank you for hosting such an interesting contest and for honoring me with the gold. This poem had such significance to me that I could only share it in those few words...thousands of years of sorrow in that poem. Thank you Diana. It means the world to me and somehow I healed in writing it.
