Sexy, soft, sultry, sensual, sad, sweet, sacred, scented, sophisticated, sassy, serene, sublime, supreme, silky, steamy, spectacular, showy, sensory & special – you decide – but I pick the form and the metaphor. I love flowers and I love writing cinquains. So, write a cinquain with a flower as metaphor.
THE TRADITIONAL CINQUAIN, as developed by Adelaide Crapsey, is a short, unrhymed poem consisting of twenty-two syllables distributed in five lines and arranged accordingly:
Line 1 - 2 syllables
Line 2 - 4 syllables
Line 3 - 6 syllables
Line 4 - 8 syllables
Line 2 - 2 syllables

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on January 30, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 3 people
- Final notes: I was delighted to see so many first-time cinquain poets in this contest. To highlight the pleasures of writing cinquains was exactly what I hoped to achieve. Because of the high quality of poems, I had to apply the rules strictly – especially the rule of using a flower as metaphor (and not just writing about a flower as such). Metaphorical writing is what set the winners apart from the other entries, together with the application of other poetic devices, the flow of the traditional style, creative presentation and other guidelines I mentioned in my column. There were many beautiful entries and I thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every one of them. Congratulations and a big thank you to you all!
~ the colour of Honesty (cinquain): Gold
~ Canterbury Bells: Silver
~ Milkweed: Bronze
HM’s (Green Trophies):
~ Cereus Seduction
~ Lily
~ Roses No More (Cinquain)

I really don't do well with forms; but I will give it a try. I love the one you have above as an example. It's beautiful. Bookmarked
-
-
Great! This is about the only form I can do well, lol
-
-
beautiful idea...
still toying with this form, and like the haiku, it has never been my strength but I always love the little gems that show up from trying...
-
-
I'm sure you can create a gem, Zayra...maybe a gardenia
-
-
I love your chanson, Nicolette! I will definitely look into this one, as I am not at all experienced with cinquain. I think I have only ever tried it once or twice.
-
-
Thanks, Marcy..I know you love short, concise poetry - so here's another challenge for you.
-
-
love it love it love it love it... yes i do
bookmarked. will study the form first. then , then, heh heh, I shall strike.

-
can I do a Sestina, instead? pretty please with sugar on it?
-
I mostly do not use any particular form but I will try with this one.
-
do you have some columns on mirror (?) or reflecting (?) cinquains
I have spent an hour or so going through all the links and reading and reading. this form makes me swoon. I shall do my best and will not submit until the end of the time frame. This is a very very subtle and powerful form. it is difficult as it can be and even more beautiful. I have become increasingly interested in the form, though, and welcome this as a learning opportunity. ,,,Danni -

Danni, I have only written that one column and for this contest I only want single cinquains. In the column there are links to examples of mirror cinquains. A "mirror" is just two single cinquains combined where in the 2nd one the syllable pattern is reversed to look like this: 2-4-6-8-2-2-8-6-4-2. It is indeed a very subtle form and not easy to master, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be an addict, lol. Hope that helps, my friend
-
-
oh i wouldn't dare a mirror one yet. but i am getting a hunger for this form
thank you, that helps a lot. ,,,Danni. wow. its sort of like a whole new world for me. it compresses language and meaning the way grapes release their nector.
