Here's some inspiration...

UPDATE:

Please bear with me, folks. I have more things to do than I can handle right now (holidays aside, I haven't even started on that). It turns out this was a terrible week to have a contest close. I'm extending it to buy me some more time; I apologize for that, but I'd rather have time to leave everyone a meaningful comment. I hope you understand. Once I get my finals out of the way and preparations for my new job (and jump through about a million hoops that go along with it) I'll get down to bid'ness, I promise.

Just to get you started.

Let the quotes lead you where they will; one or all.

Time and patience turn the mulberry leaf to silk
~~Serbian Proverb

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.
~~Admiral Hyman G. Rickover

Events, actions arise, that must be sung, that will sing themselves.
~~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Only human beings live in houses. The bigger the house, the smaller the human being.
~~Osho

Rules:

Left Align

Free verse preferred (unless you can use form and/or rhyme without making me gag)

Questionable use of grammar/spelling must be justified.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 12, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100
  • Final notes:
Holy God, the first two poems are great! The only reason the second placer got second is because I couldn't quite connect it with a quote and the author either did not get my message or didn't respond. Otherwise, it knocked me into the next universe. That is not to take away anything from the first place winner, however, as that one knocked me more clearly into this universe; took the fuzz out of the picture, so to speak.

Otherwise, it was a very close race, and all those on the finalists list are worth at least one read.

Thanks to all and sorry it took so long to judge.

    Hey... do these work?

Great. I have this bookmarked. Maybe I'll break away from this travesty of a site and think up some almost-poetry.

    Excellent

This is the first inspirational quote contest I've ever found intriguing. Excellent quotes. Tip of the hat to you, madame. I wonder what the subconscious has to say about this stuff. If it's cool, you'll be the second to know.

    Hi.

I like the Serbian quote the best. I'm having some technical difficulty adjusting. I'm old fashioned and like simple. Perhaps that is why I like books so much.

I want to write but can't seem to say what I want. Hope you get some good entries.

You should not be surprised at all. Too many poets think a bunch of rhyming or a bunch of obscure words mashed together makes a good poem. They are forgetting the most important element (to me) in a good poem: CONTENT.

I was impressed that you took the quote and explored its origins as they relate to the country that it's from. One of the reasons I posted that quote is that I'm trying to learn about my heritage. My dad is from Yugoslavia, but didn't talk about it much (or at least it seems so since he's died and I can't ask him all the questions I want to). So I'm hungry for insight into that subject. What is your background or knowledge with that place? Just curious why you went that way with your topic.

And, I'll be visiting more of your work soon. I also have some poems on the theme that I mentioned above if you're interested in browsing.

    Dang!

What an honor. There was some seriously excellent verse in this contest, and I was extremely impressed with the insightful criticism of the hostess. Obviously, I feel good about judging. Congrats to Cauchy3 and Rowan.

I'd like to thank my beautiful wife, my parents, my fans, my agent, and my dog skippy for their support. I could never have made it with out you!
I did it all for world peace, and care not the least bit for worldly trophies.
    Great contest, Destiny
