"HILDATIDE SPECIAL"

THIS WAS MEANT TO BE a one-day quickie competition to celebrate 17 November, the feast of St Hilda patron saint of English poetry.

However, owing to Kevin's "update" some would-be entrants have had problems acccessing their stored poems, so I have extended the closing date until 24 November,,,

SUBJECT: poems that in some way answer the questions: "What is poetry?", "What is a poet?"

STYLE AND FORM: optional...

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF ENTRIES: for members of the Winklings group, ONE new poem plus TWO prewrites per person.
For all others: ONE prewrite per person only and NO new poems...

FORMAT: Black typing on a plain white or pale pastel ground, please. (NB Non-compliance with this rule will mean automatic disqualification!).

No illustrations or "explanations" in the author's box. A poem should be self-explanatory.

"NO PEEKING" connvention. Though, by Allpoetry rules I cannot make this mandatory, amy I ask all intending entrants to refrain from reading and, a fortiori, commenting on other poets' entries until after the competition is judged.

There will be extra points given for poets who do so refrain, and then - within three working days of the announcement of the results - make meaningful comments on at least three entries from other poets.

And, if you enter this competition, please do not, repeat NOT critique any of my own work until after the results are announced.

POINTS: I have registered only the 300 points for the first place.

Whether or not I give points for 2nd and 3rd, or other runners-up depends on the number of entries.

And please note... whatever Kevin's new "update" says to the contrary, I shall not, repeat NOT look at any entries until the competition has closed!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on November 30, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
FIRSTLY - I have to say that there is an error in the list of placings... The 13th and 14th poems should be in the reverse order. I do apologise.. but i find the dragging process rather difficult to operate...

However, when I assign the points for runners-up, this will be rectified...

I found this a very interesting competition - with a good variety of ideas, and some very striking phrases. I have to say though that many of the entries struck me as somewhat triste and introspective - but this simply made the occasional wit and humour scintillate the more brightly...

A couple of entries had to be disqualified for sheer illegibility.(I cannot judge a poem that I cannot read easily).. However breaches of the other format rules (NO pictures, no notes or explanations) were allowed to pass... I am feeling rather generous today....

I cannot write long critiques at present... I am feeling rather exhausted and unwell...

However, if you leave your poems on the competition site I shall try to get back to them as soon as I can...

In any case, PLEASE leave them there for a week, so that other entrants may gain points for critiquing them...

Also, I shall be working out points for runners-up over the next few days, and will NOT give them to anyone who removes a poem prematurely...

Sorry... I really cannot write any more now,,

    Thank you for entering...

    Can't change color

I got rid of the graphic but I cannot change the colour of this the print or the background of this poem - what do I do now, how do I change it? Removed the picture from the second poem as well - but cannot change anything else. Hope you will allow them both in. Will not write a new one.

      Re Hildatide competition

Sorry,... I have only just found your message.

The rules of the Hildatide competition stated:

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF ENTRIES: for members of the Winklings group, ONE new poem plus TWO prewrites per person.
For all others: ONE prewrite per person only and NO new poems...

Are you a member of the Winklings? I do not seem to be able to find your name on the list of members!

(Which is not to say that it is not there, of course!).

Could you let me know whether or not you are a member.

    FINAL POINTS SCORE

Here are the final points scores from the Hildatide competition.

Since St Hilda’s is 17 November, I decided to award points for placings in multiples of 11 or 17 while those poets (alas, only two of them – “Grannyeri”, and Elfin), who made the required comments on three other entrants AFTER the competition closed AND who left their poems in until the critiquing period ended will receive an additional 28 (i.e. 11 + 17 points).

As previously noted, in the "official"; listing, I accidentally reversed the order of the bottom two poems - and sincerely apologize to the poets concerned - but I found the new"dragging" procedure difficult to operate. However, this has been duly taken into account in the awarding of points. Moreover, in spite of the request in the rules and subsequent notices, two poets (including, alas, the Winner) decided to remove their entries - BEFORE the critiquing period expired. Accordingly, they forfeit their points, and (as far as the points table is concerned) everyone else moves up one or two places.

Naturally, this does not change the awarding of Allpoetry trophies- and my own modest prize to the original winner is already in the mail. However, the list of "place" points is as follows::

    1st Masterblaster: Burning the Midnight oil: 340 (= 20 x 17) points

    2nd smOOth 1ne or the Lover of Poetry:235 (= 15 x 17) points

    3rd jjbreunig3: Today's great undead poets: 220 ( = 20 x 11) points

    4th smOOth 1ne Poetic Justice: -187 points (11 x 17)

    5th Elfin: The poet: 170 (=10 x 17) points

    6th Blazing White Wolf: Soul of a Poet: 165 (= 15 x 11) points

    7th Grannyeri: On Poetry: 110 ( = 10 x 11) points

    8th Masterblaster: The time traveller: 85 (= 5 x 17) points

    9th Neanderthal Man: Last word: 55 ( = 5 x 11) points

    10th Crystaldust: Poetry is words and Woman 34 (= 2 x 17) points

    11th Grannyeri: Poetry is: 22 (= 2 x 11) points

    12th Oldcoasty2: The writers[sic] sight: 17 (= 1 x 17) points

    Hence final scores are

    Masterblaster 425 points -
    smOOth 1ne 422 points
    jjbreunig3: 220 points
    Elfin: 198 points
    Blazing white wolf: 165 points
    Grannyeri 160 points
    Neanderthal Man: 55
    Crystaldust: 34 points -
    Oldcoasty2: 17 points
