 Palindrome Poetry

 .

Also Known as Mirrored Poetry

A palindrome, by definition, is a word, phrase, verse, sentence, or even poem that reads the same

forward or backward.  It stems from the Greek word palindromos: palin, meaning again, and dromos, meaning a running.  Combining the two together, the Greek meaning gives us, running back again...

Shown below are examples of the word-unit palindrome. The carefully placed words form the same

sentence, whether it is read forward or backward.  For example, 'Mirrored images reflect images mirrored' which includes a word in the center as a reversal point for the sentence or even the poem.

 .

Example #1:

.

Reflections

Life-

imitates nature,

always moving, traveling continuously.

Falling leaves placed delicately;

foliage touching the echoing waters,

clarity removed -

Reflections distorted through waves rippling;

gracefully dancing

mirrored images

- reflect -

images mirrored.

Dancing gracefully,

rippling waves through distorted reflections -

removed clarity.

Waters echoing the touching foliage;

delicately placed leaves falling -

continuously traveling, moving always,

nature imitates

life.

Ottava Rima

A Ottava Rima is a poem written in 8-line octives. Each line is of a 10 or 11 syllable count in the following rhyme:

 one octive poem. abababcc

 two octive poem. abababcc, dededeff

three octive poem. abababcc, dededeff, ghghghii

...so on and so on

 .

Example:

 .

He is There

When sorrow lies entrenched within your heart

And doubts, like ocean waves, around you churn,

When chaos reigns o'er life and won't depart

And for the peace of yesterday you yearn,

When evil thoughts are tearing you apart

And there is nowhere left for you to turn,

When dark of night persists throughout your day,

It's time to fall upon your knees and pray.

 .

For God is there, He's always by your side,

He is your life's companion and your friend,

He's with you through each bitter storm you ride,

From morn's first light to sunset at day's end.

You must give up your bitterness and pride

And to your Lord extend your hand again.

He only wants for you to ask Him in

And you will be forgiven for your sin.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on November 13, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
I was astounded by the sheer talent, and making my choice was no piece of cake... I thought the picture ‘Moonlit Magic’ by Al Hogue, brought out some wonderful metaphors and much, much, more from your pieces...

I was disappointed though because there were three poems that would have stood a chance in the final lineup, but each had something wrong such as wrong syllable count or not properly rhyming... in some instances, I was able to give time to correct things before the contest closed, but around the time closing, the later entries I never got to read... and then the upgrade happened, I was so saddened because they were beautifully written pieces which on their own whether form poetry or not, were masterfully crafted in my opinion...

Since the upgrade I have had many problems in getting this contest judged because it seemed like I had inherited a gremlin of sorts ...many things kept going wrong...poem pages kept going blank on me and some of the poems had text so tiny that I couldn’t read it even with a magnifying glass, also my comments weren’t registering over a few days period...it’s made me quite nervous of holding my next contest as this was the first of my challenge contest round, for Form Poetry...How ever I will go ahead with it and just keep my fingers crossed that it will run smoothly

I do hope you will all enter my next contest...those that haven’t won in this round could possibly win in the next one. The winners from each round will then be invited to enter in the final challenge, 1000 points for the Gold, plus points for the other winners and HM's

Thanks to everyone once again for writing some quality poetry, I hope and look forward to you joining me in the next one.

Below are the three awarded trophies and HM’s...

Oooohhhhh intriguing! Palindrome... that's a challenge in itself, isn't it! I'll do my best to have a go. I haven't tried either of those forms before. Can we enter twice, once for each form?

I don't try to cram a poem out on the last day a contest is run -- let alone something as formalistic as ottava rima -- or I might have entered this. I am delighted to see, though, that there will be later contest utilizing what I presume will be additional forms. As a huge fan of formalistic poetry, I am particularly pleased to see you introduce relatively unfamiliar forms to the AP community. I hope that proves true with the later contests as well. In any event, you should be commended for running a contest that is instructional, in addition to being inspirational. Great idea here.

    I simply adore this form!

Thank YOU my dear friend for the Gold, the points, and introducing me to what is now my favorite form of verse poetry. I am using this particular form in another challenge as we speak. This was a delight to write as I am surly a "lunar lover". The night excites my muse, and guides my pen.

Congratulations to ALL the trophy winners and everyone who tried their hand at these forms. I will make it my business to try the other form as well. I love to learn and you have been a splendid instructor.

    Blessings & Love ♥
