With the current elections looming, I would like some pieces about what is great about your country. I am interested in positive entries. Why do you love living where you do?
There are a few parameters for this contest.
1) Absolutely no bashing of any kind. I do not want any detrimental entries. They will be DQed without prejudice. If I wanted bashing, I could check my front page.
2) Spell check a must. I should not have to say this, but I do.
3) Any form is welcome, including essay. If you use a form, please put it in your author's notes.
4) Please make the text readable. If I need to highlight it to read the entry, it will not get read. No exceptions.
If there are not enough entries, I will delete the contest. I do not want to accept more than twenty.
Everyone will get an acknowledgement for entering; those asking for one, will get a more in-depth critique.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 8, 2006
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: I closed this contest early, as it seemed not many were proud of their country. Everyone who entered received applauds. And, I thank you for your entries.
Gold and 300 points goes to:
Keith for Scotland the Brave.
I really liked this. You showed me a side of Scotland I have seen in books and movies, but reinforced with your words. Since I have a drop or two of Scot in me, perhaps this spoke to some inner part.
Silver goes to:
Individuality for The Medieval and Tudor Deer Park.
This one shows a glimpse into a small part of your world. Again, it is a vision I have seen in books. Although I had some issues with structure and grammar, it still conveyed a part of you.
The other entries were very nice, but had more political overtones than I care for, right now. Thank you, all, for entering, even the one who pulled out and deleted all the comments pertaining to their entry. I am sorry that they withdrew under such circumstances.
Thank you to Claide for the points that made this contest possible. I hope he was not disappointed.

Well, you know I just wrote such a piece!
I'll see if I can come up with another for your contest. Wishing you much success with it and I thank you for running a contest such as this. Take care!

BlueBelle,
I am proud of my country, but not always the officials we have "elected" to run it. While I do not agree with everything the president has done, he is no worse than any of the others the last couple of terms. Our elections over here are filled with ads, not about how good the candidate is or what his platform is, but rather how bad the other guy is. They do not tell you anything. Therefore, I am not really enthusiastic about either party.
You are welcome to enter. I do not think I made it for Americans, exclusively. Anyone can be proud of their homeland. That is what I want to hear.

this one will be hard for me for there is nothing great about my country, it's a pile of cack caked in political lies
still the green fields are nice to skip along lol
-
You know, I know that! I just commented on it.
In fact, you are the reason I wrote a poem for that contest. LOL Thank you for the inspiration.
-
Individuality,
I am sorry to hear that. Still, you could write about the green fields. I am not looking for political poems here; as a matter of fact, quite the opposite. I am tired of the rhetoric on the ads and the bashing here on site. I just wanted to see if there was anyone actually proud about something where they live. So, if the green fields do it for you, then enter anyway. I had to close the last contest due to lack of interest. I thought this one would be better received. -
i do have a poem called flags fly proud which is about friendship, my friendship with someone in america but it is already posted

I like this idea.... I live in South Africa, a beautiful, vibrant country. Of course we have lots of problems like poverty, Aids, crime, child abuse, etc. but it is still one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I will bookmark this...maybe it is time to look at the positive aspects of this "rainbowland" again. Thanks for the opportunity and the inspiration.

Nicolette:
I hear that South Africa is indeed a beautiful country. I am sure there is much inspiration for a poem. Hope to see you back. -
You know? I think its the white on the blue..very contrasting...or it could just be my eyes. Sorry for being grumpy. Good luck with your contest. Hope you get lots of good entries.
-
Much nicer
-
Cool
The old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" can be taken further. In my eyes, beauty is not in politics but is instead, for instance, with nature. The face of politics may be attractive, but finding peace of mind surpasses all wants.
Great contest, and well chosen for election day. I hope to see the happiness found in these entries when we put politics on the back burner. In this, I believe, we find clarity and only then can we discharge the unworthy. God be with you always.

-
5 way tie for silver how exciting LMAO!
-
theasp,
I rather think it is the bronze? How about that? They were all good, just a bit more than I was looking for.
-
Individuality,
You are welcome. I told you you could come up with something good about your country. It was not so much the grammar as the phrasing. Still, I did like it and I learned a bit about where you live. Always a plus. -
Mony thanks tae ye, ma lassie
For the bonnie gowden tassie
And ye have confirmed the rumour
That ye hae a sense o' humour
Best wishes. -
There is a rumour,
I have a sense of humour?
Where did that come from?
It's gone, like the rum.
Not quite as sick as some of my stuff, but up there.
