Let’s Play A Game! - #2

If you didn’t get to see my last contest with this same theme, I would suggest you go visit it now. Click here to go see the contest.

This contest will be almost identical to that contest. However, instead of coming up with an option, this time I would like you to come up with a quote. It has to be a quote you thought up. No taking a quote from someone else. I am the Site Manager at FindQuotations. If I find you steal a quote, I’ll remove you from the contest and report you to the administration for plagiarism.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Pick a number 1-20. Make this the title of your poem. Your number cannot be the same number as that of what someone else has already posted. If you post your entry and find someone else has taken your number before you, simply edit your entry before the contest closes. This number will determine which quote you are given to write about once the contest closes.
  • Within the content of your entry, place a quote that you have either come up with in the past, or come up with right now. It can on any topic you want, any theme, etc. But make it inspirational, thought provoking... something that would inspire a poem.
  • Once the contest closes (all 20 entries are in), come back and check the bottom of the contest description which will be edited. I will take everyone’s quote and assign it a number. You will then take the quote that corresponds with your number and write a poem about it.
  • You will only have two days to write the poem. If your entry has not been edited in that amount of time, I will just let you know you have been disqualified from the contest. Please do not enter if you do not think you’ll have time within the next couple of days to write a poem. Please do not waste a spot in my contest nor the time someone else spends coming up with a quote.
  • I will be judging on both the quote that you come up with, creativity, etc. and the poem you come up with to go along with someone else's quote.

If you are confused, read this over again. If you are still confused, simply do not enter. Make sure you look at my previous contest to get a better understanding of what is going to happen and how it will happen. This will be conducted the exact same way, except instead of options, you’ll be given a quote.

Alright, the contest took a little longer to fill up than I had hoped and there were a couple of errors with the site that took a while to fix so that I could get my last two entries. But it finally happened. Now what you do is simply find the quote that corresponds with the number you chose, right a quote either about the quote, using the quote somewhere in the poem, or just as inspiration or a topic for the poem. If you use the quote within the poem or as the title, make sure you make it stand out (bold, italics, quotes, etc.) since you did not come up with the quote. When editing your poem, please change the title to an actual title of the poem so I'll know you edited it. Put in your author's notes, the number you chose, the quote you posted, and the quote you were given. All of these will be considered when judging. I will begin judging on Saturday morning. That gives you almost three days to complete the poem.

Here are the quotes:

1. “Anyone who's up to task, doesn't ask.” - ea
2. “Compassion, Morals and Truth are all small pieces of your spiritual house, if you start dismantling the pieces, the foundation crumbles and you are left with just an empty lot.” - Cupcrazy
3. "If you believe in what you follow you are a true believer, But if you follow what you believe than you are a dreamer.” - BrokenAngel24
4. “To collect the best pictures and to make a perfect dream, or to collect perfect dreams and to create a perfect future?” - Sonja
5. “Time means nothing to those that dream.” - Simpatia
6. "True wisdom comes from hindsight." -Ink Artist-
7. “Walk at the side of the law but do not overstep it misery awaits those who do.” - masterblaster
8. “Happiness is a journey.....not a destination.” - Laura Lamarca
9. "If I am willing to give up the thing that makes me the happiest, then and only then have I reached a sacrificing heart." - FireyAura
10. "Past mistakes Present lessons for Future learning" - Desire
11. “In life, you create your own asylum.” - Tonights Angel
12. “A mistake is  nothing more than a tattoo on the lesson plan of life.” - speakingup4kids
13. “Life has freedom - Freedom has life.” - Sunny one
14. “If you look for a stone you'll find it in another, but if it's a jewel you'll find it within yourself.” - wakingdevil
15. "Life is treasured only by those who have lived without it." - yumesandman
16. “Hold me in the palm of your hands, plant me in a garden of grey, and color me beautiful.” - mynameisnoone
17. “We all have a memory, that goes with every scar.” - countrybabe
18. "It's funny how quickly we forget our dreams, as if they are secrets we tell ourselves and don't want repeated." - trista
19. "Don't care if you lose sometimes, people seldom remember losses; Its always the triumph that they never forget!" - HermioneGranger
20. “The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything.” - grannyeri

Good luck to all and please at least attempt this! Oh, and if you would like, find who wrote a poem using your quote and leave them a comment.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on October 22, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
I apologize for not judging this on Saturday like I said. However, I did go through and disqualify those who did not get their poem in on time then so no extra time was given. Several people were confused and thought I would be notifying them when it was updated with the options. I never said that, though. If I run a similar themed contest again, I will probably do that, though, so more entries could be entered.

To those who did enter, I enjoyed all of your poems and loved reading each quote. Always great to see the creativity that can be sparked by quotes and I liked how a contest like this provides a lot of different types of poetry without being one of those "anything goes contests". It seems as though the best poets on the site always enter my contests. The only downfall to this is I get some really tough contests to judge. But nevertheless it is so much fun and you guys always make me want to run more contests. I don't seem to spend that many points so I would prefer to give them away with a couple of trophies.

Anyways, without further adue, here are the winners:

    1. ~Memories and Scars~ by -Ink Artist-
    2. Sacrifice by ea
    3. Always by my side by Sonja

    Honorable Mention:
    Forgotten Dreams by countrybabe
    Without You by FireyAura

Thanks for making all my contests such an enjoyable experience and I appreciate everyone's effort. This wasn't even close to being easy to judge, but I loved it all the same. Thanks and I look forward to seeing you guys in my next contests!
    --Tim

I said in the description this:
"Once the contest closes (all 20 entries are in), come back and check the bottom of the contest description which will be edited."

I never said I would notify you when the contest closed. It was your responsibility to continue checking until it was edited and the date posted. You could have still written a poem since I haven't judged this yet. Sorry you were confused

Oops, I was expecting a note to tell me that the numbers were up. Sorry, goofed. Looks like it happened to others too. Will have to read more carefully next time. Thought it was a good idea for a contest.

Some of the quotes weren't used because I didn't receive all the entries, as you probably know. Simpatia was the one who was assigned your quote. Thanks again for entering, ea
