Terse Verse

There are people who believe a poem isn't a poem unless it is a couple of pages long. Good poems come in a variety of lengths. Some of the finest poems I have seen have been very short. --SO--  what I want is a poem with less than 100 words!!

The style and subject is open and so is my mind to most types of poetry --BUT-- I do not want text talk or "adult" language just plain, polite, English.

Winner gets a Trophy and 450 points

Second a Trophy and 200 points

Third a Trophy and 100 points

No more than 5 entries per person please!! Pre-writes are allowed if you think it is good enough.

I will be the sole judge of success in this competition.

NB If it is one or two words over that's OK but if I think it's too long it gets disqualified. I want good, terse, verse.

INTERIM NOTE

Thanks for everyone who has entered so far. I WILL comment on each poem but it is taking me some time because there are so many wonderful entries. I almost wish I had not agreed to 5 each >

I have whittled the grand dield of entries down to the final handful and have written to you all (I hope). There have been some excellent entries and I will be completing the judging by revisiting those on the shortlist tomorrow.

commendations get 20 points

  • Contest was judged on October 2, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 450

Over a hundred excellent entries and only 2 disqualifed made judging a difficult (but pleasant) task.
    First place
Sunrise by Faerytale Princess was to me a clear winner.
The seperation of 2nd and 3rd was much harder.
    Second place
My Wife and Me by Gordon
    Third place
Where the Wind Blows by floorboards

There were many more that I liked but these were noteworthy contenders
One for the Road by floorboards
    Unmasked by ShelleyA
    Sun Rays by Billbard
    Serenity by ShelleyA
    Dreaming Me by bookdragon
    Life Thief by bookdragon

    Thanks to all the participants

I don't care for poems that are too long. Long long poems make me want to take a nap. the longest poem I wrote was three pages long and didn't seem like it was that long. well I wish you the best of luck on this contest and have lots of fun. later days.

Hey! I think poetry has to be judged by its quality and not by its length. Its very callenging and interesting to write short poems that speak volumes.

I have entered some of my poems.Hope you like them.

You are so right. We must judge by quality not quantity BUT we can also have preferences. I have just sent time with the work of Mrs Felicia Hemans in order to compile a birthday tribute (she was born on 25th September) and her poetry is regularly measured by hundreds of lines. allpoetry.com/Column/2219370
