Non-English Poetry

Time for another contest!

I am taking a completely different approach to this contest.  I want you to write me a poem in any language, except in English.  I very seldom have rules in any of my contests, but for this one I think we need some.

1.  The poem can be about anything you like and it can be in any form that you like.

2.  The poem must be written in a language other than English.

3.  Under the original poem you must include an English translation.

4.  You may enter as many times as you like.

5.  Prewrites will be allowed

I will do my best to critique in the language that the poem is written in, but I can't guarantee that I will know all of the languages.  I will comment on every poem submitted.  I do realize that many foreign language poems do not translate well.  I will take that into consideration with the judging.  I think that this could be a very interesting contest.  I will keep it open as long as I can because this may take some time to write a poem and than translate it.

Prizes will be:

First     300 points
Second     200 points
Third     100 points
HM     50 points

Let's have some fun and write some poetry.

Any questions, just leave them in the comments and I will answer them as soon as I can.

UPDATE!!!!!  SEPTEMBER 18, 2006

Please forgive me if I have translated my comments incorrectly.  I am translating some languages that I have never translated before and some of them I am translating word by word.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on September 30, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Thank you everyone who entered. When I started this contest, I had no idea that I would be getting as many poem enter. I also did not thing that I would get that many quality poems. This was one of the hardest contests that I have every had to judge. I had to read and reread many times to determine the winners. I wish I could give trophies to all of you, but I don't have that many points.

I want to apologize if my trnslations were not correst on some of my comments. I did the best that I could. Some of the translation were done literally word for word and I am sure that I got sentence structure and tense wrong.

As hard as it was for me, here are the winners:

First Place: Das Land der Kriege by reinhardt-napoleon
Second Place: Das Singen eines Vogels by sommerregan
Third Place: Rendez-vous avec mon cannibale by lavender shadows
    HM: La intrusa by La-Poet
HM: Pishbol (Street Karma) by carbonelly

I would again like to thank you all for entering.

Latin would be fine BleeDiNGeMBeRs. It doesn't have to be the dead language.

I will be pretty easy on the foreign languages, because many of them I only have a basic knowledge off. I just thought this would be fun and different.

Oh, well... one more thing... I have a collection of acrostics about the four seasons in both German and English... The English ones aren't translations but just the English versions... because I wanted them to be acrostics too... I could do a 'real' translation of course if the English versions don't count...

The tranlation would not have to be an acrostic LittleAnn. I understand that the acrostic would not work because of the translation.

Must the language be a spoken tounge? Can it be dead, or even a fantasy language? The only languages I speak aside from english are Quenya and a smattering of Latin... I would LOVE to enter this contest however though, it is a refreshing change from the monotony which seems to overwhelm us....

Muriel (my name is Quenyan BTW)

I really only speak english, but I know a little bit in several languages. It takes me a long time to translate some of my comments, because I have to translate word by word and I am sure that my sentence structure is not correct, but I like to dabble in different languages. Being in the Navy for 26 years, I visited a lot of foreign countries.

That's fine, it has taken me five years to learn this language, and I still dont have it entirely down... Thank you for allowing Quenyan poetry... that gives me many more options to work with.

Thank you so much for honouring me with the bronze, I really appreciate it. That poem is a special favourite of mine but I never entered it anywhere because it was originally French so I didn't want to throw it just anywhere. I love multilingual contests, they're so interesting. Great contest. Congratulations to the other winners and mentions.

Thank you for this interesting contest

It was a good reason to post the Dutch translation I'd made a couple of years ago of one of my all-time favourite poems I'd made even longer ago
I've been meaning to post it for a long time, but just like Lavender Shadows, I didn't just want to throw it on here without a good reason

Congratulations to all the winners and HMs; you deserve it
And congrats to you Pollycheck, for holding such a wonderful contest and judging it; it must've been hard!

Please let me know whenever you will be holding another contest like this
