I am taking a completely different approach to this contest. I want you to write me a poem in any language, except in English. I very seldom have rules in any of my contests, but for this one I think we need some.
1. The poem can be about anything you like and it can be in any form that you like.
2. The poem must be written in a language other than English.
3. Under the original poem you must include an English translation.
4. You may enter as many times as you like.
5. Prewrites will be allowed
I will do my best to critique in the language that the poem is written in, but I can't guarantee that I will know all of the languages. I will comment on every poem submitted. I do realize that many foreign language poems do not translate well. I will take that into consideration with the judging. I think that this could be a very interesting contest. I will keep it open as long as I can because this may take some time to write a poem and than translate it.
Prizes will be:
First 300 points
Second 200 points
Third 100 points
HM 50 points
Let's have some fun and write some poetry.
Any questions, just leave them in the comments and I will answer them as soon as I can.
UPDATE!!!!! SEPTEMBER 18, 2006
Please forgive me if I have translated my comments incorrectly. I am translating some languages that I have never translated before and some of them I am translating word by word.
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 30, 2006
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Thank you everyone who entered. When I started this contest, I had no idea that I would be getting as many poem enter. I also did not thing that I would get that many quality poems. This was one of the hardest contests that I have every had to judge. I had to read and reread many times to determine the winners. I wish I could give trophies to all of you, but I don't have that many points.
I want to apologize if my trnslations were not correst on some of my comments. I did the best that I could. Some of the translation were done literally word for word and I am sure that I got sentence structure and tense wrong.
As hard as it was for me, here are the winners:
First Place: Das Land der Kriege by reinhardt-napoleon
Second Place: Das Singen eines Vogels by sommerregan
Third Place: Rendez-vous avec mon cannibale by lavender shadows
HM: La intrusa by La-Poet
HM: Pishbol (Street Karma) by carbonelly
I would again like to thank you all for entering.

nice idea for a contest, hope it turns out well ill keep an eye on this one
-
I'm not too good at spanish, but i'll try...
-
hmmm, will latin or maybe pig latin be okay?
-
Thank you for your comments introvertish-divert. Keep an eye on this contest would be nice, but it would be more fun if you entered.
-
Latin would be fine BleeDiNGeMBeRs. It doesn't have to be the dead language.
-
I will be pretty easy on the foreign languages, because many of them I only have a basic knowledge off. I just thought this would be fun and different.
-
that's good, because, i just put one on and i don't know how acurate it is.
BTW: It really is different. -
R U OK? I M OK. C D B? Or...How 'bout chatspeak?
-
Sorry Melodies, Chat speak would be a form of english.
-
WOW, that's cool, I'm more than definitely entering one or more of my German poems, I only have to do a translation!!! As many entries as we like?? Cool!
Dood luck with this, I hope you enjoy rerading!
Keep smiling!
Annie

Oh, well... one more thing... I have a collection of acrostics about the four seasons in both German and English... The English ones aren't translations but just the English versions... because I wanted them to be acrostics too... I could do a 'real' translation of course if the English versions don't count...
Annie
-
The tranlation would not have to be an acrostic LittleAnn. I understand that the acrostic would not work because of the translation.
-
hey i wanted to submit a poem in urdu but shall i type in urdu and submitt or i type in english urdu...

Hi..this is a different contest idea. I am sure you will get a wide variety of entries in various languages.
-
Must the language be a spoken tounge? Can it be dead, or even a fantasy language? The only languages I speak aside from english are Quenya and a smattering of Latin... I would LOVE to enter this contest however though, it is a refreshing change from the monotony which seems to overwhelm us....
Muriel (my name is Quenyan BTW) -
Ok,I like this idea, but I want to know...any language? Is Albanian ok? Or Italian? And, can i submit poems in both of these languages? Of course, I will provide the version in English.
-
It´s nice to read (better: try to read
) all these different languages ....
-
Any language is okay Stella Cadente and enter as many times as you wish.
-
I would prefer that they not be fantasy languages Muriel, but any actual written or spoken language would be acceptable
-
Oh, Latin is acceptable?
I was thinking maybe a Spanish entry would be fun............... -
Yes it is Azure 85, we can wake up the dead language and make it live again.
-
Alright, though that is a mite disappointing, I shall work with latin. hopefully my sentance structure will be correct and my verb varriations correct as well....
-
I have been doing some research on Quenya and I will allow poems written in Quenya, but I might not be able to write the comments in Quenya.
-
Hey Pollycheck
How many languages can you speak? I have seen that you have replied in German,French...
-
I really only speak english, but I know a little bit in several languages. It takes me a long time to translate some of my comments, because I have to translate word by word and I am sure that my sentence structure is not correct, but I like to dabble in different languages. Being in the Navy for 26 years, I visited a lot of foreign countries.
-
Thank you for the answer - your comment on my poem in German was well written ( I have understood it without any problems )
-
That's fine,
it has taken me five years to learn this language, and I still dont have it entirely down...
Thank you for allowing Quenyan poetry... that gives me many more options to work with.
Muriel -
hi, the name of my poem is in spanish but my poem does say both. just the name i havn't wrote what the english translation is. if you want me to just let me know and ill do it when im on next.
thanks

This is a grand Idea, but as a natural pratical joker I must ask, have you gotten one in pig-lattin? I'm just kidding of course...but I must aplaud your Idea with this one..
-
I hope you enjoy my poem
-
Your apologies about translations are accepted.
You realy wouldn't like to know what Translator has done for you.
~Sonja~ -
Thank you so much for honouring me with the bronze, I really appreciate it. That poem is a special favourite of mine but I never entered it anywhere because it was originally French so I didn't want to throw it just anywhere. I love multilingual contests, they're so interesting. Great contest.
Congratulations to the other winners and mentions.

Congratulations to the winners, I hope you all enjoyed this contest. I did!

Thank you for this interesting contest
It was a good reason to post the Dutch translation I'd made a couple of years ago of one of my all-time favourite poems I'd made even longer ago
I've been meaning to post it for a long time, but just like Lavender Shadows, I didn't just want to throw it on here without a good reason
Congratulations to all the winners and HMs; you deserve it
And congrats to you Pollycheck, for holding such a wonderful contest and judging it; it must've been hard!
Please let me know whenever you will be holding another contest like this
-
