Two of your favourite poems by other AP writers

I have a very bad vibe about the last comp I posted. I have that awful feeling of standing beneath a shower of shit. I hope I am wrong, I really do but as I have more points than a porcupine I figure let’s waste them on what you think is good poetry.

Please don't confuse this with me trusting your taste in poetry. And please don't confuse this with a poem of yours.

I don’t want you to post one of your poems.

I want you to post two poems that are on this site that you just love and think should be published.

They can be anything…any style, any subject, funny, sad, political, society, spiritual personal… anything but shithouse!

It can be two different writers who you choose for your pieces

You will post the title , for example

Slashed to a thousand pieces by Worthless Bog

The link – that you have cut and pasted (NOT THE POEM- just the link)

For example allpoetry.com/poem/2141471

And a SHORT reason as to why you like it. The poem, not the writer. Pissing on about the writer may produce an upchuck reflex. And...

MAKE SURE IT IS A SHORT REASON !!!

You will get a gold and points and the poem picked will get a gold and points and a very nice review and possibly highlighted….maybe

I know, generous is hardly sufficient to describe such largesse.

However, there is a catch.

If I like it, I will of course praise it to the hilt. If I don’t, both you and your crappy nomination get a bollocking.

This way your nominee gets a ray of sunshine to begin their day or a blizzard to stuff it up completely.

By the way, if you feel an overwhelming urge to nominate me….don’t.

I am arrogant enough to think mine are just the bee’s knees and I can get to read them anytime I like. But thank you for the thought.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on September 27, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Thank you for your patience. As these pieces were simply nominated and not penned by those who entered I figured I would do this in a more relaxed manner.

This was the comp “I want you to post two poems that are on this site that you just love and think should be published.” It seems simple enough.

In a statement of bleeding obvious: Art is very subjective. I am of course bemused and staggered what people like and more importantly, what they consider to be good poetry. I am reminded of a quote by Baron de Montesquieu which I believe not only sums up subjective behaviour completely but of course human beings to a tee.

“If triangles ever needed a God they would probably make him three sided.”

To think I would merely view the poetry without viewing the poetry of the person who selected that poetry would be a forlorn hope to say the least. Unlike previous comps my object here was not simply to find good pieces, isolated and washed up upon a barren literary shore but I really wanted to discover as with all my comps, genuine literary talent that will expand my reading pleasure and enrich my life. It is hardly surprising how many good poets seek good company and how the poxy poets latch on to ordinary poets who in some cases are even below their own shithouse standard. In a classic case of we are what we eat and we as writers are what we read. And it is abundantly obvious some writers like the person they have nominated way more than they enjoy great writing. Whether this is right or wrong, who cares? It is merely an observation.

I thank all who participated and as always it is interesting to see who likes who on this site. As stated in the competition notes some of the unfortunate pieces that were proffered for comment were as ordinary a piece of writing that has been my misfortune to read. There were however pieces that was truly magical that I would never have discovered under normal circumstances and for those writers discovered and those who kindly nominated those gems, a heartfelt thanks.

This is how I saw them- those with a “yes” beside made for great reading. Those with a “no” ranged from okay to utterly shithouse.

See there ya go!! Now I know I'm going to have to go out and BUY the book!
Being that you mentioned the "bee's knees" I have this question. When a bee sits do they get that "something is being rammed up my butt feeling?" Cause I'm sitting here with visions in my head of a bee going cross-eyed every time he sits. Like how do you sit with a LONG pointy thing like that? Do they sleep on their stomachs? Do they move it to one side? And if so, is that indictative of whether or not they are a lefty or a righty? Would the other bees discriminate between left bees and right bees? OMG, another thought! It's a good thing they don't have balls, cause then they'd have to sleep on their backs. There would be the bee with his knees splayed out belly up just like a dog. Then they would have to change the cliche' to "It's a bee's life". Oh and then the dog jokes would change completely. "Why does a bee lick his balls?" Then the pollen would get all over them. Talk about being loaded!
Actually, this is a rather unique contest. I can think of a couple of poets that would fit in the great category. In my humble opinion.

Can that writer be a former AP writer who was bannished to another site? Linking a poem of his from that site? I would love to keep his name alive in these parts.

    Desiree

    Good contest David.

David, sometimes you come up with the most interesting ways of distributing your mass accumulated points. I hope that there are some truly noteworthy pieces that are brought to the table on this one. Everyone does have a different perspective of what good poetry is. One man’s roof is another’s place to stand to piss on that other man beneath it………………… ahem. Yeah, this is going to be fun to watch as it goes on and see what others submit. I may just have to come back from time to time to see the chosen submissions.

Shit, I want to enter this but i'm scared bloody stiff of making a bollocks of it.

Could I bear to incur the wrath of a pussy cat with a megaphone? At least it will mean some decent poetry gets noticed instead of the normal load of old drivel, (yours and mine excluded of course)

Right i'll go and read what other people consider good, should be an interesting way of wasting a bit of my life.

    Then i'll post

    Barb

Ps Good idea but don't go walking through any doorways until your head shrinks again.

So very true John - wow being the bee's knees must be right up there with "I'm the king of the castle"
I guess one would have to be all that to carry such huge bollocks around and i thought he was just a hunchback...
Edited on Aug 23, 7:21 because 'bullocks bollocks..big either way'.

    Dear David,
This, for me, has been a real mind boggler!
Taking alone the Sonnets in my WYLEIAN Collection by other Poets than myself (and even quite a few of my own!), they are ALL my favourites or they wouldn't be included in it.
There are also many really good poems (in other than sonnet form) which, within two or three days from posting, thereafter languish unread on this site (including some of your own!).
If a few of these are brought to light again in this contest by discerning readers, you will have done their authors and this site in general, a HUGE service and I, for one, commend you for this, whatever your past sins!
Thank you and thanks to every entrant who honours a fellow poet by submitting his or her work as a favourite choice.
    Blessings and kia ora!

Brilliant idea. This is an inspired subject for a contest. Bravo. I think judging will be difficult.

This is a great idea for a contest. If I can narrow down my favorites to just two I’ll have to nominate them. What a daunting task, given the treasures I’ve found hidden within the trash on this site. I look forward to reading the poems that others bring to your attention, but if there favorites are nearly as talented as mine I don’t envy you the task of judging this one. Patti
