Convince Me That God Is Or Is Not Real!

Prove or support your belief.  Convince me, but there's a catch.  You may use no biblical reference.  I have read the Bible four times through and I want to know God through your eyes and not through that book.  For those who do not recognize the Bible as God's word, this is no issue.

This is open to any faith because I believe that every person believes differently.  SEA Angel inspired this contest, so she will probably read the entries as well.

Poem or essay.  Essays should not exceed 300 words.

Limit one essay or two poems per writer.

Standard rules apply.

I believe that God is real because he rose from the dead. How can an ordinary person rise from the dead?

    interesting

I respect your idea for this contest, truly but I won't be entering because I don't feel as though I have to PROVE that God, my Father, is real or not...I know he is, I believe he is, and he just is....
I hope you get a lot of entries to confirm for yourself what you do or do not believe
    All the best

Well, you only need to prove your faith if you are leading others to believe. Most religions include that as a part of their teaching. Mine does not.

Loved this quote from your Auth page...

"Truism is a philosopy, not a religion. There is no right religion. All religions attempt to understand, communicate with, and contain God. It is wiser to listen to God. Many religious leaders try to manipulate followers with fear and superstition for personal gain or power and the others seem caught in their own madness....."

Great concept of reality you have here brotha man..

I have become far more of a philosopher than a religous advocate as I've grown into more awareness...seems a thin line of verbiage twixt the two...

I suppose I'd advocate Einstein's quote...I want to know God's thoughts, everything else is just trivia.

I'll ruminate over this and maybe enter suntin...

    Interesting concept for contest

I believe in God because in Saint Petersburg, Florida, at four I'd rolled an inner tube down by the pier to float on. I'd been told I wasn't big enough yet felt life guard didn't understand that I WAS big enough.

It felt so good lying inside inner tube and I had my eyes closed yet noticed water getting very cold and looked up and saw I was almost all the way past pier out into the ocean.

I put my legs through and couldn't reach bottom and pulled myself back through and prayed to God for someone to please see me. Simultaneously, to end of my prayer, a woman on beach screamed, "Oh My God! A child is floating out to sea!"

Nobody asked which God. We all knew which one...the one we all pray to.

A rose is a rose is a rose and God is God is God and by any other name a rose is still a rose and God is still God.

Ehyeh asher ehyeh. "I am that I am". God is that God is.

We cannot see each other and only our words here and yet each one of us exists through our words and so it is with God. It is our thoughts and words that make each of us who we are.

Many don't understand the dynamics of the why of why the internet works yet have faith works. So it is with God for those who believe. Faith in things unseen.

That would make a pretty good contest entry. I see God everywhere. I don't need faith to believe in God, I'd be blind if I didn't see God.

As I read...I found this contest interesting. What I even found more interesting is that you have read the Bible four times as you stated. After four times are you still looking for proof yourself?...I'm just curious. Is that what this contest is all about?...and the reason I ask is that when I read the Bible in certain parts I end up in tears because it fills me so. Like I said I'm just asking what your view point was after you have read it.
Just my opinion but I don't think proof is what each person needs...it is what YOU beleive....like I said just my opinion.

I once believed that the Bible was the inspired word of God. I read and studied it daily. I even was memorizing much of it with the intention of memorizing the New Testament. I memorized about 15 chapters including John 15 in Spanish. In those days, I was as you are, filled by the scripture. I would now say brainwashed. The more I studied and the more I pondered the more I realized that some things just do not make good sense. Some things directly contradict, but mostly I realized that the Bible is about the evolution of religion from the Jewish, Christian, and Catholic views. Religion has not stopped evolving. God has not stopped revealing Itself. Now I care more about people and understand them better than I did as a Christian. I also have a clearer view of God. There is no turning back for me. I am going forward.

I am not seeking proof of God. God is all present and anyone can see. I am hoping to possibly discover something I have not seen before. I am also hoping for some good poetry.

    Dear Andy,

You really are a bit on the hopeful side. You want someone to provide a convincing proof either way on a topic people have been squabbling about for 2000 years FOR THREE HUNDRED ALLPOETRY POINTS?????????????????????????????

    Come on! Get real!

I like the bit that people can't quote the Bible as back-up. A bit like asking people to prove or disprove that Sherlock Holmes was a good detective without reference to Conan Doyle.

I think I'll skip this competition!

Hope you get a good logical proof...........!

  • Andy Stephenson
    August 4, 2006

Not quite like Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock did not exist beyond the covers of the books he was in. God is supposed to exist beyond the covers of the holy books. I excluded the Bible because I am relatively familiar with that book about God. I didn't exclude the other holy scriptures. Personal experience counts high. The most humorous entry has been the cheesecake theory. So far I have had no atheists.

    There are some philosophical difficulties with asking people to convince you of whether or not God is real. You have not specified what features characterize what you consider to be "God". Much of the difficulty - most of it, in my estimation - is over unclear, imprecise, and undefined notions about "God". For the most part, I don't even think most people know what they're talking about, much less what others are talking about, when they discuss "God". God is perhaps the most nebulous word in wide circulation out there; few people view "God" precisely the same. Could you be more clear about what you mean by God? Or could I simply say that God is Nature, Nature exists, therefore God exists? You might want to specify that God must be supernatural, a personal entity, must interact with the universe in some way, etc.;

An interesting topic might be to ask people to define God in poetic form, rather than explain why ???? does or does not exist (???? being my substitute for "God" when left undefined).

Just want you to write about things which will convince me God is or isn't real. I would like insight into the subject which I hadn't considered. I will judge based on content mostly. Kari has her own criteria. The subject is extremely broad, and I can understand if you choose not to enter.

Without having to go so much into a reasonable details such as "Glacian", I have also made the same mention that was commented in my contest entry.

Keeping in mind that I am in no way trying to be disrespectful towards anybody who believes in "God", especially since I suspect the world is far safer with people having a fear of "everlasting" torment if they are not disciplined (enough), which I think would be too awful of a punishment for anybody to go on suffering never have the chance to be forgiven all in sincerity, Besides... most people will feel very alone not to think that there does exist a "God". But as for why I wrote my poem the way I did was to prove that "God" must be very inconsiderate to NOT prevent thosands of "completely innocent" children each day from starving to death which to "rely" on any of us to rescue them is "totally unfair" for these children... and knowing this one example makes the "all powerful God" out to be so inconsiderate... then this is not really a "God" at all because by definition... God is "perfect", which not only means that "God" is suppose to be always right, but fully capable of doing what's right... hence... this "God" (in particular) does NOT exist.

As for the universe and life itself... those are miracles... such as every atom popping in and out of our dimension that each of them seem to be able to share the same degree of intelligence absolutely different than our own... which most likely multiplies in growth where more empty space avails and theoretically instantly passes information around between certain atoms like brains do. Anyhow... what I'm getting at here is that we can all look at how all "appears" to look beautiful and praise "God" for it, but in the meantime...

  • Andy Stephenson
    August 10, 2006
I would not consider God perfect, I don't know if God is intelligent or all knowing. It is obvious if God is all powerful, God does not use it. Things just happen as they happen. I believe that God is all of existence, but I can't explain God any better than that. I think everything is a miracle from the smallest particle to the whole of existence. I don't know what the whole of existence is and I can't really comprehend it. A never ending universe, but what of other dimensions or states of existence? There are probably millions of things yet to be discovered and more coming into existence all the time.

Aha! I knew there wasn't anything that any of us could say that could convince you that "God" doesn't exist which I did suspect before I started my contest entry after reading your comments. Just wanted to see what your response would be altogether because most people are "afraid" to let go of any notion of there being a "God"... which is perfectly fine by me. What I may call miracles or is also referred as "quantum" intelligence if I remember correctly... can always be seen as an act of "God".

I didn't receive any challenges to the existence of God. All I got were afirmations of God's existence. Did your entry deny the existence of God? I didn't understand it to say that. I will read it again.

Sorry I missed the Silver and Bronze entries as it seems they have been removed already.

It is not necessary for anyone to prove the existence of God. That was not my intention in entering your challenge. Any opportunity I get to write about the God of my understanding, I will take advantage of. Thank YOU Andy for that chance.

For leaving His Holy Spirit to dwell among us!
