Gems Among Jewels and Mythril in Stone

~@~~@~~@~ Overview ~@~~@~~@~
It's time I start my contest craze up again.  So if you're here, congrats on finding this.  Contest # 18.

---For stories or Poems!!!

This one is a very big sort of contest and I'll have to admit, it might seem sort of strict and a bit lengthy.  But you'll enjoy the challenge, I'm sure.  What's more?  You could be getting points just for entering (as I try to do for all my contests).

I will not claim any of these options as original or for that matter, under-used, but enjoy them anyway.

Now...I'm organizing this contest like I do with most/all of them (to the best of my knowledge.  See below for the "Table of Contents," so to speak.
Options -- What you have to choose from.
Requirements -- What you should do.
Rules -- What you must do.
Points -- What you could get.
Later Additions -- What changes I've made as the date progresses.

~$~~$~~$~ Introduction ~$~~$~~$~

This is merely to make you think this contest is huge and in depth and everything.  Why?  Because I like contestants that actually read things and stuff.  So if you've read this far, you'd a wonder in itself and you should head right to the Options section because the rest of this is just junk to fill up some empty space.

After all, I have to do something to ensure that all entries are good and wonderful and this is a great way to rant to the point that no one even bothers to read it.  Seriously, why would you be reading this?  I mean, I did tell you to go straight to the Options section, didn't I?  That's just a little obvious...

I would suggest that you head down there now.  Go on, scroll down.  You can do it.  You have to in order to view this contest, anyway.  Most contests are like that, you know.  You have to use that silly little knob in the middle of the mouse or that bar-like thing on the side with the two arrows.  You know what I'm talking about.  Sure, it's there.  You might not want to use it or believe me when I say so, but it is and you ought to.

Now then, have I lost everyone?  Yes? No?  Well, come on...I must have lost everyone.  Who wants to read about the scrolling knob on a mouse and the insane ramblings of a writer too sleepy to think what she's saying?  Oky...that's enough, on to the contest!

~%~~%~~%~ Options ~%~~%~~%~
Choose at least one of these below.  Do not alter the option the option allows it or you have IM-ed me and I allow it.  (Say as much in your author's notes if this happens)

-Romance-
1. Meet *Alydee.  An interesting character that I've made that is simply too much like her mother for any good, sane man to make a move on.  What's the mission?  Make a character that she'll fall head over heels over.  Someone that'll sweep her off her feet and make all her pre-conceived ideas about love, romance and everything like that shatter into a million pieces.
* Note: Alydee's bio is posted at the very end of:
allpoetry.com/poem/1497760

-Fantasy-
2. Youwarkees* are my most favored creature.  Not sure what that is and can't find it anywhere on the net?  Good.  That's because I can't even find much of anything about them.  Try and encyclopedia--book version.  Still no?  Good.  That's because they've fallen along the wayside and are now called things like "fallen angels," "winged humans," or something of that sort.  The mission?  Use youwarkees as the main character(s) of a story.  Any story, but it must be fantasy based.
*Note: Information on the youwarkee is posted at:
allpoetry.com/poem/1497760

-Stealing-
3. Something was taken from you--by force! Tell me about it.  Give me the feelings, the experience, something.  Don't give it out all cursing though.  (Read rules)  Remember to describe it.  I want to know what it is.

-Poem Tag-
4. Choose a topic, any topic.  Write a poem--a short poem.  Done? Wait for my comment.  Now right a poem in answer to this comment and post it here. Done?  Okay...one more time.  That'll give you three poems.  No lengthy 200 line entries, please.

-Collaboration-
5. Find a partner.  I don't care who it is--just not yourself.  Write two lines and let the other person write the next two.  Continue this to the end of the poem (no more than 100 lines, please).  You much choose one of these topics below:
--> Angels and/or devils
--> Controversial subject (like stem cell research or gay marriages, e.g.)
--> Arguments
--> People's etiquette or rudeness

-Numeric-
6. Write anything that mentions numbers in numeric order.  Going up (1, 2, 3, 4, etc) or going down (4, 3, 2, 1, etc).  You must not use the actual numbers in your poem.  Write them out.  (four, three, two, etc)

-Acrostic-
7.  Send me an instant message saying you want to do this one.  On AP, it's dragondancer.  I'll send you a word (or words, depending) and you have to use that as the word(s) for your acrostic.

-Rhyming-
8. Rhyming is a wonderful thing when done right and not forced.  It takes a great deal of patience and thought to get this write unless you seriously just can't write without rhyme.  (like me)  Anyway, I want anything that sounds good rolling off the tongue while still rhyming.  If you got good meter with it?  Even better.

-Youwarkee and Me-
9. Think you can really do this one?   Think again.  Made specifically for those of you that are actually very good with dealing with characters you hardly know (unless you know me).  You are not allowed to alter this/these character(s) in any form or fashion.  They aren't just some random 2-bit characters.  They're as close to flesh and blood as the Benjamin Franklin you read about in those books at school (or, at least, you'd better).  Your job is to request my assistance for this one.  I will hand you the reigns on a random number of characters.  Don't worry, I'll give you their bios and (upon requests) give you basics of their species.  And, yes, they are all youwarkees. (Doing this one grants you an HM)

-Written Languages-
10. Here's a list in alphabetical order.  Choose 5 words and use them in a story or poem.  Your write must have a storyline.  Make the words fit.  Alterations that I'll allow are to make any number of these words plural. (eg: duck to ducks)  These are all nouns so use them as nouns.
A Adya Katti [A short, heavy blade with forward-angled cutting edge from Coorg, SW India]
B Bibliography [A list of the works of a specific author or publisher.]
C Cardiovascular [Of, relating to, or involving the heart and the blood vessels]

N Nom De Plume [French for pen name]

R Rake [An immoral or dissolute person...normally male]
S Sioux [An indian tribe also known as the Dakota; inhabiting the northern Great Plains]
T Tantrum [A fit of bad temper]
U Urethra [The canal through which urine is discharged from the bladder in most mammals]
V Vision [The manner in which one sees or conceives of something]
W Walrus [A large marine mammal of Arctic regions, related to the seals and having two long tusks, tough wrinkled skin, and four flippers]
X Xantippe [A scolding, shrewish woman]
Y Yeoman [Officer of rayal household]
Z Zucchini [A long green-skinned squash]

-Sleepless Night-
11. This is for anyone that can actually do this.  Don't try it if you have something important going on the next day!  Stay up.  Late.  Later than you would normally.  In fact, if you can, stay up until you see the break of dawn.  ...Did you really make it?  ...Really?  Not fibbing, are you? Oh, all right, tell me about it.  Anything.  How if felt during/after/before or whatever.  As long as it's dealing with this experience. (Previous experiences welcome, but remember the rules on the prewrites)

-Angels in Dreamland-
12. You're sleeping.  There's somebody else in your bed.  Who is it?  Tell me who and all the other regular questions. (Who, what, when, where, why, how, ect) Give me an account of the matter.  This must still be in story and/or poem format. (as stated at the beginning of this contest)

~^~~^~~^~ Requirements ~^~~^~~^~
You don't have to, but you get brownie points.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THESE! (I mean, I said that before, didn't I?)
Comment on something of mine.
Comment on an entry
Post an entry for each option.
Come back and see if a new option has appeared.

~!~~!~~!~ Rules ~!~~!~~!~
1. Grammar.  Use it.
2. Spelling.  Use it too.
3. Author Comments.  Use it.
4. PG18 and below.  That means if you were the parent of an 18-year-old, it'd have to pass your disgression.
5. No more than two posted entries per option.  Yes, two!
6. Prewrites are not allowed.  You must first contact me and request me to allow it.  I will require some information before allowing your prewrite(s).  Please IM me (dragondancer)
7. Give links to whatever you commented on (commenting on my works gives you brownie points.  Why?  Because it makes me happy and then I read your stuff and who knows?)
8. No complaints about the way I run things.
9. Any entry over a what I've said above will be deleted unless you get the okay from me.
10. If you get the okay from me to put something here that is against the rule(s)/option(s) then say so in your comment box along with the "code" I give you.
11. REMEMBER! You have to get the okay from me and the "code" from me in order to post a prewrite.
ALL OTHER PREWRITES WILL BE REMOVED.

~#~~#~~#~ Points ~#~~#~~#~
Points are:
Gold: 300
Silver: 50/Negotiable
Bronze: Negotiable

~*~~*~~*~ Later Additions ~*~~*~~*~
There are three new options to choose from.  Remember, you can post two items for each option, giving you 16 entries in all.  That's a lot, and I don't know if there's anyone that will actually post that many, but there are there anyway.  Come back soon and I may have even more!

I have altered the ending date due to such a small amount of entries.  I shall be waiting for more entries.  At least ten have to enter before I think there's enough to judge fairly.  After all, if there's only a few, the ratio of chances to win to lose isn't right (in my opinion).
--
I have added another rule.  Merely a reminder.  Nothing more.  I have also added a bit more to the requirements because some people obviously can't read regular print.

I have added a new option.  Only two posts per item.  18 possible entries now.

I have explained in as plain speaking english as I can figure as to who the prewrite option works.
--
I have added another option.  Only two posts per option. 20 possible entries per person.
--
Actual ending date will be somewhere around 09/1/01/2006.  That is my decision unless some convinces me otherwise.
--
Added two more options.  24 possible entries.  Is anyone seriously going to enter that many anyway?

Enjoy!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 29, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Well...I know I closed this early, but I couldn't wait any longer. I was starting to think everyone had forgotten about this contest anway. *shrug* I suppose that makes sense as that it was about a month long (for lack of people entering).

I'd like to thank each and everyone one of you that entered. Your works, as always make me smile and wish to the highest, furthest stars that you come back to enter the next contest...which, by the way, is all ready brewing in my mind. It'll be out in a matter of days, I'm sure!

Two of the Requirements you have for your contest are against the rules. You are not allowed to make people comment your stuff in order to be in your contest. Why would you do that anyways? Are you THAT desperate for comments?

  • Rose Dark Thorn silver member
    August 3, 2006
She said that you don't have to do them, but they are appreciated. There is a difference. She didn't make them the rules.

I think you were a little rude as well. Just because she thinks it's nice for people to give meaningful comments on her work and others, doesn't mean she's desperate for comments. That is an assumption you don't even know her well enough to make.

Please explain to my how these said requirements are against the rules and why you believe so. I do not require anyone to enter, participate nor do anything extra in my contest. (Save actually using the English language with a little bit of decency and keeping things PG18)

I am not requiring anyone to comment on anything. As I said above those notes, "You don't have to, but you get brownie points." Brownie points only make your work more plausible because it proves to me that you are willing to participate in the AP community. I apppreciate writers that are also kind, considerate (etc) people.

Anyone may enter this contest without having to bother with any of those requirements. They are merely there as a sort of promotional add. And I do this for that specific reason: to promote the use of the comment box at the end of a piece, regardless of whose it is.

I am not desparate for anything, and I find your accusations flawed, prejudice and hurtful. I would appreciate it if you do not post such things on my work again. Not only does it make me (the writer/host of the contest) displeased and hurt, it is like throwing your trash on someone else's lawn. Don't do it.

Your words, though they may seem just and perfectly harmless to you, are not welcome here. Please do not come back. I will have to notify a moderator of your actions if you continue to complain and/or start to harrass me. (Harrassment consists of anything that makes the other person uncomfortable that the person does not stop)

This is a fantasmal idea. I love all your options and everything else. I do intend to write at the extremely lowest.. one entry for this contest. But if I'm inspired to do so.. I will do any number higher than that. Though I doubt I can do more than one that's good enough in a mere two days. If you consider extending the contest, it would be much appreciated and I'll do my best to enter something worthy of your eyes. Let me know how it all turns out, I'd love to read your favorites of the entries to this contest.

Oh.. and I read it all the way through.

Now, a wish that your talent never fades...

    Merry meet,
An interesting group of choices. Have you ever noticed that no matter how "clear" you think that you have made the instructions, someone has to rain on your parade? I had that in my contest and I had only two catagories that were wide open. Some people are never happy I guess. I wish you lots of luck in this. I would enter but I have to spend a lot of time in my various Dr.s offices in the next two weeks. I'll come back and read your winning enteries.

*shrug* Not everyone can understand what you mean. Not everyone reads between the lines the same way someone else would.

And don't be afraid to try and enter. I've no guarantee that this contest will close when it says so. I'm waiting for enough entries. That may take a while, if only for the fact that I refuse to allow all three trophies to go to one person...unless they really, really deserve it (which has never happened before). Feel free to come back again though. I tend to post contests somewhat frequently.

Actually, no. X-Men are actually mutated humans. A youwarkee is a different species derived from somewhere before homo sapius...

I'm not a geneological expert in any form of the matter (probably flunk if it I took something about it too). The people with wings from X-Men are merely humans with a mutated form of some sort allowing them the ability to grow these said wings.

But thanks for you question anyway. I hope you return to enter something!

    Go Away

Your comment is very hurtful to myself (the contest holder) I would appreciate it if you did not say such things on any of my work again. You may think that your words are/were justified, but I must remind you that my contests are not for everyone. No contests are meant for everyone and they certainly don't appear to be headed in that direction.

If you even bothered to read the introduction, you would have concluded this prior to your reading the rules which follow after the introduction. (Which is obvious because introductions come before just about everything)

Also, the rules are very simple. They aren't hard to follow and they most certainly don't hurt anyone save for those that refuse to use the English language with a bit of decency and have some sense of grammaticks. Moreover, the only rules that shape what a contestant may enter are as follows:

    4. PG18 and below. That means if you were the parent of an 18-year-old, it'd have to pass your disgression.
    6. Prewrites are not allowed.

These are only two. I see no reason why the rules I have listed cannot be followed with ease and understanding. And if that weren't enough, this contest all ready admits that not everyone will wish to enter nor will they wish to go through the entire contest rules and such things.

In conclusion, I feel that your comment was bias and rude. I would appreciate it if you do not respond to this reply nor comment on my works again. I will not tolerate your hurtful manners. And, if that weren't enough, I will notify a moderator if you continue to say such things on my works and put you on my block list (which I am usually wont to do).

Hey, I hope you're pleased with the results of this contest. My piece was just in it so I felt like I was a part of it, though it was not worthy of anything more than it got. This contest was amazing, though quite honestly maybe a little to exact. Perhaps next time if you leave it more open, people can find it easier to be themselves and more will enter. Just a suggestion, darling.

    Thank you

I do not hold contests for people to go wherever they want. I've attempted that before and they've failed miserably. Writers without some sort of guidelines, even minute ones, tend to wander off their chosen path(s). Therefore, I give a streamline path for them. If they do not wish to enter, that is there choice. I do understand where you're coming from, but I seriously don't want the completely open-ended sorts of contests that can lead to such chaos as they have for me in the past. However, I'm working on another contest right now, so it'll be up in a matter of minutes if you care to see if you would like to enter that one.

Your work is always welcomed (as is everyone else) but I really do appreciate your advice, comments, critiques and, obviously, your entries into my contests (subsequently, your writes).

Wow, thanks so much for actually considering my words. Just so you know I meant no offense or to be controlling. You just mentioned in the final notes that there were not very many entries, and I have a knack for sticking my nose in things and trying to leave a tip on how to make it better. Obviously, you need not my help. You've got this stuff figured out, and I admire that. It is true most contests end up with much chaos. You're also right that many people can't stay on their chosen path for writing, but that's not always a bad thing. I'll have to look at the contest, see what I think. I do need some inspiration, I keep getting all emotional but with no original ideas.

Lol, you will find there's no getting rid of me. You've sparked my interest and thus may have all comments, critiques, entries, and advice you want/ need and much more.

What's love without a little poison?

I'm glad to have you about then. I will await your entry(ies) impatiently. Oh yes, and don't be surprised that I take into account what you say. I take what everyone tells me for consideration. Some are a little more bias and winded than others, but I still consider any and all words spoken/typed to me.

    Answer to question:
    ...Fruitful?

    Much thanks,

Fantastic. I will definitely be here to closely watch your work. Can't wait to see this next contest.

Lol, ehh you expect me to have known the answer?
I don't know, I think poison is healthy. Rather contradictory to the skull and bones on the warning label though.
