Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 16, 2006
- Rewards: Gold: 500
- Final notes: The most important words to say first of all are ‘Thank You’ to everyone who took the time and effort to research and write an Essay for Oldpoetry.
Every one of these will be featured on Oldpoetry from today onward.
This has been said many times before that there are only 3 places to be given shiny cups etc. and it has been a difficult choice to decide on the 3 entries that receive these afore mentioned items. However, this has no real bearing on the actual essays themselves. Each one is unique, holds it’s own qualities, information, interesting fact and food for thought.
Each one, we feel sure will be an entré to the main course – which is of course Oldpoetry itself.
Congratulations to all on a most interesting exercise and thank you all for helping other AP members interest in Oldpoetry’s to grow through your essays.

Caliente - maybe this is the time to test yourself - why not give it a try?
rufina -
Is there a preferred length you are looking for? Also, may I submit something on ee cummings? I notice he is in the oldpoetry archive, even though he died after 1950; does that mean he's fair game?
-
No length restriction at all - e.e cummings will be fine - look forward to reading your entry.
Von -
Would the entry I wrote for the War poetry contest you held earlier in the year qualify? Just wondering. If so, would you consider opening prewrites to allow it? If not, I'll try and come up with something, because I enjoy the challenge of OP writing. Blessed be.

Good idea, and quite a challenge!
-
Whoever promoted this in the Featured Section - a huge thank you.
rufina (Von) -
I really like your option #6...do you want poems or prose? Or either? I have a kind of creative story type thing in mind...now if I just have the time ro writie it
This entire contest is a grand idea and I wish you all the best with both hosting and juding it.

Hello IrishYndina, thank you for your interest. We are looking for informative essays for this contest, neither poetry or prose. Our plan is to feature each of the Essays on the Oldpoetry Website as an insight from the author (you) into either one of the options listed above.
Please consider entering.
rufina (Von) -
Excellent
very good challenge good luck on hosting your contest i think i may need to check out oldpoetry to get some ideas i have writer block tonight too hot too sleep take care -
if you could focus on specific poets and or collection of poems... it could be easier... as not everyone are literature erudites... some of us are just readers of random poems
-
I have added the link to this contest in my Favourites folder. Let me try to come up for this one
-
I'm afraid I cannot remember your previous entry. However if that entry fits in to the categories above, that is, if its a factual essay or a well reasoned opinion, within the categories then we would consider it.
If it doesn't you might consider it as a starting point for a new entry.
We are not looking for more poems or fiction writing.
Jim -
There's over a week to go Earthstar so why not take a long swim in Oldpoetry and see what surfaces. You may not come up with anything but there again . . . .
Have fun.
Jim -
Hi sanmdr. I have been following your browsing and comments on Oldpoetry and think you may well have what is needed for at least one good entry (maybe more)!
Look at option 6 and I think you'll come up with something. Remember if the old-poet you really want to write about isn't on old poetry yet just let myself or Von know the details and we will try to remedy the omission.
Good Luck
Jim -
I am sure I speak for the rest of us when I say we would like to read an offering from you in this contest.
Your entry for the poetry competition was marvellous.
Get those little grey cells working.

I hope you take up the challenge Owlfire. The more the merrier.

I really like seeing OP out and about here. As someone who seems to prefer the Mostly the Dead Ones, I appreciate your efforts to keep those wonderful names and poems alive.
I read somewhere that a person should read 10,000 poems before writing one..there are certainly plenty to chose from if you are willing to look back.
Good luck to all. I'm considering a last ditch jump in...

Hi Lisa - the closing date has been extended by 3 days, if you do decide to place an entry and need more time please just say the word.
rufina -
I already wrote one that is being syndicated on OldPoetry. Its on C.S. Lewis. Not sure if that counts. If you want, I can enter it as entry to your contest.
--Tim -
as much as I loke old poetry, I could never write as great as they did back then, its hard to completely get the feeling that it belonged then as it would do now, things changed in life but i would love to ead soe of them when its over with.
-
Prewrites aren't allowed in this contest Tim - sorry. Your C S Lewis is on the front page of OP as we speak. So you're ahead of the crowd already.
You still have time for another one though
Edited on Aug 13, 10:47 because ''. -
I spent so much time on the C.S. Lewis essay I don't know if I could do that again. Plus school is starting and I'm getting a lot of hours at work this next week. Plus writing essays isn't one of my... favorite pass times if you know what I mean. Good luck with your contest anyhow

How wonderful!!!! That's exactly how my AP Lit teacher taught us to analyze poetry! Just splendid to see it applied outside of the classroom!
Keep penning . . . keep sharing . . . and good luck with your contest as well as any and all future poetic ventures!
I hope the entries are everything you wished for and more!

Hello BabyDut
You don't have to write as they did. Write in your own way about their work and its effects. Yout thoughts on this matter may have more weight than you think.
Jim -
Thanks for looking in Maggie.
even if we cannot persuade you to write us something please feel free to read the entries and the oldpoets they refer to.
You can always express your thoughts through the comments box.
Jim (Oldpoetry Research Team) -
Thanks for reading and writing Lisa.
If it were necessary to read 10,000 poems how would anyone ever write any?
All that is necessary is an idea and a feeling for writing.
Any essay should be no problem either. Give it a go.
Jim (Oldpoetry Researcher) -
Congratulations to the other winners. Thanks so much for the bronze.
-
Thanks so very much! I'm glad that I can share my enthusiasm for cummings and his work.
-
Hulali: could you now please submit your essay to Oldpoetry for inclusion on our site.
Thanks so much
rufina -
wow...I just got online for the first time in a while...thanks so much for the silver. I wasn't sure if it was that great of an essay, but I'm glad you appreciated it. Congratulations to the other winners, and thank you for letting me enter this contest. ~Kiwi

just checking back to peruse the entries... which of course spurs one to 'clean up' and tinker with one's own piece...
