Move Me Again

It is time for me to run another contest. I need a good emotional fix, so I am going to recycle the theme I used for my very first contest.

What I want:
I want poems so filled with emotion that they physically move me--maybe to tears, maybe just in awe.  I want poems that make me forget to breathe while I am reading them. I want poems that give me goose pimples. I want poems so powerful that when I finish reading them, I need a break before going on to the next one in the contest. I know this is a tough assignment since we are each affected by different things.  Below are some examples of things that have had the effect on me that I'm looking for.  In no particular order:

Movies: Life is Beautiful, We Were Soldiers, What Dreams May Come

Music: "Songbird" by Eva Cassidy, "Hear Me" by Shaun Davey, "In The Deep" by Bird York, "Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi" from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

Poems:

allpoetry.com/Poem/1677191
allpoetry.com/Poem/1341487

Note: All examples given are just examples of things that have moved me. I am not telling you to use them for inspiration, though you can if you like. Using them for inspiration will not help your chances of winning and not using them will not hurt your chances either. I just want to be clear on that.

If you want more examples, check my first contest. allpoetry.com/Contest/918829

You can pick the category, subject and length.

What I don't want:
Rhyme too often sounds forced to me, so enter a rhyming poem at your own risk [Note: I think I've given a trophy to a rhyming poem exactly once in all the contests I've run.]  Spelling and grammatical errors tend to be distracting.  If distracted, I'll be reading with my head and not my heart.  Spell check and you may want to grammar check as well to catch real words used incorrectly.  Example: "Your so nice." If you are going to use profanity, it better be necessary for the mood and not for shock value.  Keep in mind that while stomach churning poetry may indeed physically move me, it's not quite the feeling I'm looking for.

Points awarded as follows:
1st Place gets 423 points
2nd place gets 167 points
3rd place gets 82 points

If more than three poems really move me, I will give out Honorable Mentions. Any applauds I get for this contest will go to the HMs or split between the winners if there are none. I will leave comments on all poems submitted after the contest ends and applaud anything worthy.

Thanks for at least reading this far.  Now get to writing!

Note: This was given seven applauds for a total of 49 points towards HMs. There was an additional gift of 500 points for HMs from an anonymous member. Since it just won't do to have an HM get more points than someone who placed, I am upping the points for the top three by 100 each.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 28, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 423
  • Final notes:
Thank you all for your entries. It was a tough contest to judge for several reasons, the biggest of which was quality of work. Without further ado:

    1st Place - I won't tell you by Pyragus
I loved this one and it just moved me like I'd hoped to be moved.

2nd Place - brief by philosphyofkate
This was only nosed out of first by the finest of margins. Kate has a way of looking at love that just pulls at me...

3rd Place - To ask on the murmur of the wind... by crisstiena
This was inspired by one of my favorite books and film. It delivered what I asked for.

    HM's:
    dawn by Venessa
A moving piece that just missed getting a trophy.

    damn it sarah by sublimeluvr
A really good poem that didn't move me like the others, but I just loved the angle this took for its persepctive.

Don't Let Them Be Like Me by lonikins
Another really good poem that may have missed the mark, but is just so good it deserves a special mention.
