Light the Match this Morning So You Won't Be Alone

Live.  Breathe.  Trust.  Smile.  Love.  Listen to Pearl Jam.

You do not have to know who Pearl Jam is to enter this contest.  Read the options and see if you can get inspired like I have many times.

ABSOLUTELY NO BASHING PEARL JAM whether it be in your poem or comments, it will be immediately disqualified.
Please use correct spelling and grammar.
Absolutely no chat lingo, sticky caps or abbreviations.
Please no poems about praising god, humour or cliché lovey dovey goo.
Profanity is fine.
All other kinds of poetry, including abuse and erotica, are fine.

I will read and respond to EVERY poem come judging so don't you worry

Enjoy the contest and read some of the entries if you have the time.  Let's get the juices flowing.

Option 1:

Let the lyrics inspire you to write.  Please put what song inspired you in your author's comment box and please don't use the exact lyrics in your poem.  If you think it really adds to it, maybe it's something personal, you may include it but have it in quotations and credit it.  The lyrics:

"You didn't leave a message
At least I could have
Learned your voice one last time"  -- Porch

"I am myself
Like you somehow
I'll wait up in the dark
For you to speak to me" -- Release

"I seem to recognize your face
haunting, familiar, yet I can't seem to place it
cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
lifetimes are catching up with me" -- Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town

"I'll swallow poison, until I grow immune
I will scream my lungs out 'till it fills this room" -- Indifference

"who made up, made up the myth
that we were born to be covered in bliss?
who set the standard, born to be rich?
such fine examples, skinny little bitch
model, role model, roll some models in blood
get some flesh to stick, so they look like us" -- Satan's Bed

"up here so high I start to shake
up here so high the sky I scrape
I'm so high i hold just one breath here within my chest
just like innocence" -- In My Tree

"so this is what it's like to be an adult
if he only knew now what he knew then" -- I'm Open

"I shut and locked the front door
No way in or out
I turned and walked the hallway
And pulled the curtains down" -- In Hiding

"sorry is the fool who trades his love for high-rise rent
seems the more you make, equals the loneliness you get" -- Soon Forget

"The TV, she talks to me
Breaking news and building walls
Selling us, what I dont need" -- Ghost

"I can't hold on, the weight you bear
My body's broken fast, please lift me up
You can't know what it's like to be inside
The fading melodies can't beat my need
I'm not the same without you here" -- Other Side

"Consider me an object. Put me in a vacuum.
Free of all conditions. Free of air and friction.
I'll be hanging upside down. And there I will swing, for all eternity" -- Comatose

"How I choose to feel is how I am" -- Inside Job

Option 2:

Read (listen to the song if you can) the lyrics and write a response to the song or what it makes you feel.  Write which song you used in your author's comments.  The songs:

"Footsteps" - lyrics found at www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pearljam/footsteps.html

"Gone" - lyrics found at www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pearljam/gone.html

"Present Tense" - lyrics found at www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pearljam/presenttense.html

"Better Man" - lyrics found at www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pearljam/betterman.html

"Garden" - lyrics found at www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pearljam/garden.html

Have a song that's not on here that you really want to do?  Enter it with what inspired you in your author's comments.  Most likely I will allow it

Try to have fun.  This is for a lot of points so give it a real shot.  I have 600 points for gold and an undetermined amount of goodies for silver and bronze.

Note that this contest will stay open as long as it takes to get at least 10 entries.  However, once it is closed, I judge on that day or the next.  THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME I EXTEND THE CONTEST.  JULY 15 WILL BE THE LAST DAY, I promise

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 17, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 600
  • Final notes:
The inspiration I get from Pearl Jam is incredible. I am so glad I am not the only one who can benefit from their incredible souls.

This was extremely hard to judge. They all held something special and were all written superbly against their certain inspiration.

1st Place - Shot the Complains Out by Liberation of Sense
2nd Place - Your Haunting Voice by Jadestone Doll
3rd Place - Alanah by Faded

Honourable mentions - Breaking Point by tinuelena
In a Trance - DK akaLunaticSerene

They were all great though! Please look for my next contest when I decide to have one. Thanks for entering everyone and definitely -

KEEP ON ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD!

I love love love Pearl Jam (especially Eddie Vedder)! I'm not sure if I can do anything to come close to eddie's words (I think he's a wonderful poet) but if I come up with something I will enter it. This is a good departure from other "inspired by run of the mill pop music" contest. Hope you get some good entries, even if I dont' enter, I'll have to stop by and check some out.

Well you will not be compared to Ed Vedder or any of the members from Pearl Jam by all means. I just want people to get inspired from them like I have.

I'm glad to see another Pearl Jam fan and I hope you enter.
