To Heart on Sleeve--Honoring Byron

Update

First, I want to express my gratitude, not only to those of you who entered, but those who donated points, applauded, sent links to poems you wished to send to Abigail and her family, and simply sent messages of care, concern, and support.

I also want to apologize if my comments on your pieces were not as thorough as your would have liked.  This is the first time I have ever read every single entry of a contest with tears in my eyes so at times it was difficult to comment properly.

Due to the overwhelming response and point donations, I am able to increase the amount awards to the top three places to

Gold--500
Silver--300
Bronze--200

I will also be able to award 10 honorable mentions with 100 points and I will go back and applaud each of the remaining entries a second time.  It will take me a few days to complete judging as I also want to link all the entries into the contest body so that if you find need to remove your entry from the contest at a later date, Abigail will have a link to it.

This is going to be an incredibly hard contest to judge as all of the entries are incredibly sincere, heartfelt, and appreciated.  But I will do my best

If I neglected to list you in the list of points donors and you would like to be listed, please IM me and let me know.

I will get everything judged as quickly as possible.  Thanks so much for your support and your patience.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Many of you on the site know a wonderful sister poet named Heart on Sleeve.  If she has commented on your poetry, you also know her as Abigail.  If you have followed her poetry any time at all, you know that she has struggled with her young son, Byron's illness.

I received word today that Byron passed away Friday.  The entire ordeal has been hard for Abigail's entire family.

This contest is simple and two fold.

1.  It is to encourage and support Abigail aka Heart on Sleeve and her family during a time that is more difficult that some of the hardest roads many of us ever walk.

2.  It is also to honor the memory of her son, Byron.

You see, if you read through many of her writes about him, you will see that he was a very strong, brave little boy.  Many times he was the light that carried her through these hardest of times.  He knew how sick he was and he faced every day of it with courage and I don't know that he ever stopped smiling.  The message that I got from his sister mentioned that he was smiling up to the last.

In one of her writes, she mentioned him asking her if he could be a star in the sky when he died because he wanted to be able to shine down on her.

He is a very special son of a very special mother.  He has 2 sisters as well who were touched deeply by him.

So, in support of Heart on Sleeve and her family and in honor of their wonderful Byron, write something from your heart.

1.  Any form
2.  Any style
3.  Rhyme or not
4.  StiCKy If IT iS wHAt YoU WaNt To Do
5.  Forced rhyme is acceptable
6.  Don't worry about anything except being heartfelt, sincere, and as uplifting as possible.
7.  Cliche is not a crime as the poetry police have been dismissed for this one.

I will be promoting this contest with every point I have at my disposal so awards will be

Gold trophy-300 points
Silver trophy-100 points
Bronze trophy- 50 points.

Rules

1.  No meanness of any kind will be tolerated in this contest.  I don't normally DQ writes, but in this case I will make an exception.
2.  No prewrites.  This is a current event so it requires current fresh writes.  If you do have something that you wrote previously honoring Byron or encouraging Heart on Sleeve that you would like for her to see, link me to it in the comments on this contest and I will add the link into the body of the contest write up.
3.  No adult or erotica as this isn't the time or place.

You can enter as many times as you like.  I will read and comment on every entry.

Here is a link to her author's page for those of you who wish to simply stop by and leave your encouragement there.

allpoetry.com/poets/heart%20on%20sleeve

If you don't already know her, but wish you did feel free to read through her writing, but don't feel like you have to read or comment.  This is all about the Allpoetry community standing behind one of our own in a time of need.  Feel free to enter the contest if you just want to tell a fellow poet you care whether you know her personally or not.

Any points donated during the course of this contest will be used to promote this contest so that more people have a chance to see it.  If you feel compelled to donate points for promotion, I will list your name here, but please let me know if you prefer to remain anonymous.  Do NOT feel like you have to though.  It is certainly not required.

I've never known her, or been introduced to her poetry, but that's definitely an issue I'll rectify immediately. This is wonderful what you are doing, and I only wish I had the appropriate words to convey, in poetry, my deepest sympathies for what she and her family must be going through at this time. Much luck to you on your contest, and she will be in my prayers.

this contest shows the depth friendship that a site like this can offer and create... let's hope this site will be around for a long time, as well as friends like yourself, Thistle... I have not yet interacted with Heart on Sleeve, but it is the community spirit here that help us get to know one another better... may Abigail find solace here...

How tragic - how sorry I am. Parents should not see their children die before they leave this earth, but it happens so often. Thanks for hosting this contest. Wrote something up as soon as I saw the news. Hope many more take part in this contest.

I am so incredibly sorry to hear this news. I wrote a poem for Abigail in another contest and read many of her poems about Byron at that time. I haven't checked in for a week or so now, and just feel terrible. I don't know if I can write another poem, but my thoughts and prayers will be with Abigail and the family. My heart breaks for them all. Here is a link to the previous poem I wrote: allpoetry.com/Poem/1997511 and given a couple of days I will see if I can come up with another. Thank you so much for hosting this contest.

I'm heartbroken to hear the news and I will try to come up with a poem, though I don't think I could write something good enough to do her grief justice.

Good luck with your contest. I will be thinking of Abigail..

There can't be anything more difficult than losing a child.
This is just so sad, I'm weeping for her.

I am so sorry to hear of abigail and her family's loss. I entered this contest just to send her and her family some love and support. I don't know have the pleasure of knowing her myeself, but the loss anyone you love especially a child can be devestating. It always helps to know there are others who can sympathize or even just send a word of encouragement.

i have just logged on and heard and the tears are drowning my words, this dear woman was indeed the first to read my poetry and in fact took it upon herself to prompote me to others she knew, we became friends as far as internet friends go and i not so long ago held a contest to bring her hope, i am so sad for her as at one point the doctors had been so positive he sadly got a infection of some kind i'm presuming this was what made byron worse, this is such a king gesture and one she will appriceate i am sure she seems to be kind and has had so many hardships to bear my love is with her family and to you also, what a wonderful site this truly is

This is a prayer for Heart on Sleeve,

    Heavenly Father,
Tonight as I surrender my child unto you, may he know eternal peace. But, Father, I also pray that you heal my heart and make me to understand your will in the scheme of life, I may not ever fully understand why Byron was with us for a short while or why he had to leave us so soon, but it is in your doing. Please help me to be strong, and have patience, as well as courage to live each day knowing that I had the blessing of having your littlest angel in my life. In your name I pray,
    Amen.

    * My Father was a preacher years ago, and I came across this prayer once on the loss of a child, I pray that she recieves all our condolences in her time of need* May God bless her, and keep her. I inserted his name to make the prayer more personal for her, oh my heart is sad for her

Oh my goodness! This is so incredibly sad! I'm crying now. This is such a heartbreaking thing to read about. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for them. You are doing a truly wonderful thing for their family! I'm going to do my best to come up with something for this. But I was wondering if you could help us all out with our work content. Do you know of the things he liked to do, or favorite colors and toys? I would love to write the mother something that speaks of those things that were part of him. Do you know anything along those lines that would help? If you do, you should probably put it in the contest description too so others can work those things in too! What a wonderful thing you're doing! I commend you!

I understand how much it hurts to put yourself in her place. Sweetie she "IS" in her place. You were sweet to donate points and I hope you come up with something. I could not write a poem to save my life; however I wrote a letter. Maybe you could do that. No matter what we say though she will hurt. Just try to enter something from your heart and she will know that is where it came from. You are a gem. Trina.

This is a wonderful thing you are doing. I have read some of the poems and they are so sweet and comforting. I will try to come up with something. Bless you

Thistle I am sure you had tears in your eyes. These are some of the most emotional, heartfelt pieces I've read here. Best of luck to you hon in the judging. I hope you are well. All of you are still within my prayers. As Always, Trina.

Thanks for the HM and the points. What a wonderful group of poems written, great entries, wonderful contest. Congratulations to all - I know we didn't write these poems for the trophies or the points, but to help a fellow poet who is going through a tough time.

God bless you thistle for holding this contest in the first place. I am sure Abigail will be comforted with this very thought, that we all are with her in this time of pain, and that all this wonderful poems written for her has helped her feel much better. The points and the wins do not matter here, but how else could we get people to write and send her condolences. Thanks once again, for giving us a chance to reach out and touch a heart. God bless Byron family, God bless you and God bless us all. Thank you for the HM and the points, I will use them to promote my poem in the feature.

    Love and light,
    Lencio

    Love and Blessings

Thistle, Thank you so very much for hosting this contest in honor of Abigail and Byron. As Lencio said, God bless you.
Thank you also for the lovely bronze trophy which is now sitting on my author page. My heartiest congratulations to Red Red Rose and Stuart Higginson for the gold and silver, also to all the honorable mentions. I think every poet here deserves to take a bow for their outpouring of words for Abigail and her family. Abigail, I hope the words in this contest were of some solace to you. My love and blessings go out to each and every one of you, today and always.
    Joyce
