Dreamcatcher 2 - The Abuse Continues...

"A beast does not know that he is a beast, and the nearer a man gets to being a beast, the less he knows it." - George MacDonald

At least 1.8 million women are battered each year in the U.S. Battering is the single major cause of violent death to women, exceeding rapes, mugging and auto accidents.

These are just a couple of facts about abuse... Unfortunately, there are so many more. And it is not only women that experience violence in their home, but men and children aswell. This should never be kept in silence, but shouted out for the world to hear, and then maybe we can put a stop to it, forever. Do not suffer in silence, but know that there are people out there who support you.

This contest is about abuse in general, but the main focus will be on domestic violence. You can write about other forms of abuse (women, men, or children; physical, emotional, or sexual) if you feel strongly about it. Express yourself however you want, with a poem, a prayer, your experience, or generally how much the thing disgusts you... all options are open, and style is your own choice!

• It will be nice if you can refrain from excessive swearing, unless it is absolutely necessary, and present in a moderate level.

• You do not have to read, comment, or applause any other entries in the contest, but it is considered a nice gesture, and it will help you see the problem from another persons view...

• Please avoid using all CAPITAL LETTERS, Sticky Caps, aLTeRNaTiNG CaSeS, "g33k t41k", and internet slang, and please use spellcheck.

• Maximum one entry per person, and prewrites are not allowed.

Remember that every single voice counts. If this is not interesting enough, you get

2500 points and Gold trophy for first place,
1500 points and Silver trophy for second place,
1000 points and Bronze trophy for third place, and
five Honorable Mentions worth 100 points.

That is 5500 points in total!

All poems will receive atleast one applause. So what are you waiting for? Go out there, and get inspired!

Donations! These peoples have donated points to support us!

3000 from sunny day
1000 from Fool no1
300 from Brandy3

Surplus points donated in last Dreamcatcher contest has been transferred to the prizes for this contest...

I am also looking for voulenteers to help judging this contest. Those collaborating on this contest will not be allowed to enter.

This contest will be ended June 5th, 2006, or when the number of entries reaches 75, which ever comes first...

Update: If you feel you can not manage to enter this contest for some reason, maybe because it hurts too much, maybe you want to enter the contest Hope2MakeIt made, letters of hope-contest at allpoetry.com/contest/2031032 - where you can write letters of sympathy to abuse victims. Thanks for giving HOPE to people!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on June 23, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 2500
  • Final notes:
A contest like this is extremely difficult to judge, especially alone. Most entries were good, and they were all worthy - but unfortunately I can only give three trophies, and just so many Honorable Mentions. I have given each and every poem an applause as a token of my gratitude for your participation. The winners was chosen thus I found the ones that touched me the most, and managed to convey what I wanted the contest to be about; abuse awareness. The Honorable Mentions all came close to a trophy, but I have chosen to sort them by order of entry. Finally a big thanks to all for entering!

First place goes to WolfHeart, for "Red Silhouettes" at

I like what you're doing here and the message you're sending. The leading cause of women's deaths isn't battery- it's heart disease. Maybe if you put leading cause of violent death among women? Battery related deaths escalate during pregnancy for some reason.

Again- I like what you're doing here, but there's no need to skewer the facts to fit the message. The message is loud and clear without that.

    Great Idea

It's hard to bring more truth into the light of day for a contest. I stopped expressing my abuses here because some relatives found out and now three generations later I am again being victimized for finally speaking in poetic words abuses I could never say aloud. Maybe that will be a clue to what I can write about. I can speak to the children and young adults who have been told to avoid me by their parents for telling stories. It's hard for them to hear a father or mother, brother or sister, next door neighbour are pediphiles or have engaged in keeping "secrets". This contest will give me something to think about. Since we are not allowed pre-writes all that has been written can not be used.

If I enter I will have to re-suffer the pains to find the words. Good Luck to all and God Bless. This is a good thing you are doing. Anyone who is interested please visit my poems and read.

I have a poem that I wrote last year that I think would fit the contest. It is not currently on AP although it was a while back, so it is not technically a prewrite although quite a few people read it. I am not interested in winning points or trophies , just the poetry, and in cases like this, the issue , and how poetry can help bring these things home to people. I wondered if I might add it to this contest in the circumstances. If not, no problem.

Hi, Barbara! You put me in a tight spot here, or maybe I did it myself by my previous answer... As a moderator I can see if a poem is freshly deleted, and if it's been gone from the site so long that it's impossible to undelete it, I would say it's ok to re-post it, but you mention that it's moved to SharePoetry... I am not sure if SP is part of AP anymore, but it is still a sister site. I am afraid I would have to say no on that one, but I thank you for posting the question. Thanks for the comment! Jim

No problem Thanks for the reply. SP isn't 'technically' a part of AP, although they are sister sites.

I've been housekeeping, slowly moving poems from here to there, and so on. I think the one I am talking about was deleted this morning(or late last night). Not sure, since I deleted some, changed my mind, undeleted them, etc. (Maybe I should post them there, then delete them from here).

I'll see if I can come up with something for this, but writing poems like that are so emotionally draining.

I don't know what the statistics tell us, but in my experience as and adult I can say this much...There is indeed violence in the homes, both in the white and the black homes..There is mental, physical, sexual and others in between..In my humble opinion "Poverty" does play a significant role..Let us be realistic, although we hear of the low rate of unemployment in the country..I would ask does anyone think that is the rate of unemployment in the black communities...it is not..the rate is much higher...joblessness is frustrating to a family and can cause the kind of atmosphere that leads to spousal abuse and even violence..It that any excuse...of course not..but it is a reason...when most families are made up of husband and wife, whether they have children or not..and there is sufficient monies to bring to that family the things that they need, there we might not find the kind of violence we are talking about here...violence does not happen only in the black family or in black relationships it happents in all relationships..but if any one thinks that poverty is not an added factor in the matter of spousal abuse, they are not being honest with themselves...at 71 years I know that is does...research is wonderful..facts are facts....

This is a wonderful idea for a contest!!!! There is so much abuse in the world, yet, those that are going through it feel that they are alone. Maybe this will help them to know that they aren't! As a survivor myself, I would love to enter, but, I'm trying to forget that part of my life so I haven't written anything about it in awhile. And you are not accepting pre-writes. (I understand that there would just be too many.) I wish you much luck in judging this! I know that this would be very hard to judge, but, more so to read!

I have written many poems on my childhood abuse. It is always very hard to speak out and once you do people never look at you the same. You are marked and somehow dirty. Still it takes enormous strength to speak out and stop the abuse, whether it be to you or a family member. I am a survivor of abuse. This contest is a great idea, I would enter but I have written all I can on the subject. Only when more needs to come out can I write more. Great idea though. Good luck make people aware. That is the main goal.

I think that this contest will receive many entries. Abuse is a tough thing to talk about whether it be by someone to you or by you abusing yourself by something life self harming, which many people including myself have been through.

How can mental abuse compete with the physical, mental pain compare with the blood and tears of ones body.
I will not even wager a comparison but wish all those who have suffered all the good that life can offer and a little hug from Holland

I wish I could say I would enter but I am not able to enter again...I have written a poem about the abuse that not just myself had to endure but my mother and my sister...So I promise I will read all the entries and comment but I can't write again

You do have a wonderful idea...People need to start talking about this and put a stop to it

After being in a lifelong abusesive situation as a child & an adult, I will most certainly try to write it out and enter before the deadline.I have fought for this cause all my adult life and can only applause those who desparetly try to help others in this kind of situation. Blessings in your endeavors!

I think this is a great contest, spreads awarness and gives people the chance to share what they feel and have expirianced without fear as they know others will be doing the same.

Hi, dutch2lips! You are maybe right, it's hard to compare one form of abuse to another. The one you have experienced is always worse, than the ones you are fortunate enough to not have experienced... Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! Jim

Anyways Good Luck to everybody, And Remember the God's and Goddess's are always with you and on our side. Blessing's to you and all or yours.

Yes, I don't have much left until I can judge the contest, most likely within a week. I have used the time since the contest ended to read through the poems, a few to half a dozen each day, not to overload my emotions. If you want, I will keep your poem aside, though I think your poem deserves being in the run for the trophies... Thanks for dropping by! Jim

I am overwhelmed at this win. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My goal is to share with other women, as I found each thinks they are alone and the only one who has gone through it. We need to strip away the shame and concentrate on educating women of their rights and worthiness, and teaching men it is wrong to abuse.
Wow - when I saw my points I about fell off my chair. Thought someone had made a mistake! You have warmed my heart with your understanding of my poem. hugs WolfHeart

Jim, I can't thank you enough for holding this great contest that will hopefully spread awareness to many. Thank you for the honorable mention as well, it was an honor to participate in this. We need contests like this every so often to remind people of the way things are in our world. Every little bit helps. My heartiest congratulations and thanks to the winners and everyone who participated and/or read any of these fantastic works. Everyone should take a bow for a job well done. Love and blessings for each and every one of you, today and always. Joyce

It'll be a while till I hold another contest like this, I sort of overloaded my emotions. I will think a while, and find another worthy cause to support. Maybe a HIV/AIDS contest? Hugs to you and your husband from Monica, Ole, and me. Jim
