The time for me to host a second contest has been long overdue!
I've decided to make this a form contest, because form poetry is my own preference. It is also a Christian contest, which means that any entries should be applicable to this topic in a positive context (i.e. not bashing beliefs).
CHOICE OF FORMS:
Rondelet
Triolet
Rispetto
Heroic Rispetto
Kyrielle (3-5 stanzas)
Monotetra
Trois-par-Huit
Palindrome
Ottava Rima (1-3 stanzas)
Sonnet (any form or hybrid)
Most of these forms have a very definite meter and rhythm to them. Also, I prefer SOLID rhymes- the only exception would be minor poetic license, as long as it fits well in the poem.
Here's a GREAT site to help with any rhyming difficulties!:
www.rhymezone.com
I've personally done at least eight of these forms myself, so I know what to look for.
If you'd like to see an example of any of these, you can visit here:
www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/types.html
CONTENT:
My only pet peeve about Christian poetry is when it's repetitive fluff- PLEASE don't give me something like that. Dig deep and put some content in there!
Here are some content ideas:
1. Write about God as the Creator of the universe- things He's made that reflect back to Him, Christian lessons found in nature, etc.
2. Find a Bible verse and dig deep- pull out the meaning and POETIZE it to me!
3. I've been wanting to do a contest about Christian symbols in the Bible, such as the red cord out of Rahab's window, the dove and the raven from Noah's Ark, etc. If you can write a poem about a less-obvious Christian symbol in the Bible, I'd be much impressed! (e.g. NOT about the Cross- I KNOW what the Cross is about!)
4. I have a little book on the names of God- I'd LOVE to see a poem describing one of His names!
5. The book of Psalms ALWAYS has something good.
6. If you DO write a poem about the Cross... make it real (as in, WHAT REALLY HAPPENED to Jesus on that Cross), make it deep (- MORE than a simple reference to it), and make it as PASSIONATE as it truly IS.
7. Come up with something good on your own!
THE RUUUUUUULES!!!:
1. Obviously, make it contest-applicable, or it will be automatically disqualified.
2. NO PRE-WRITE WHINING!
We're giving you PLENTY of time to write something good! (Besides- I hear enough whining in my classroom... I don't need it from adults! AND, I'm just serious enough about this one myself to deduct points!)3. Pay strict attention to spelling, grammar, meter, rhyme, etc.
4. PUT THE NAME OF THE FORM IN PARENTHESIS AFTER THE TITLE, PLEASE.
5. I would like to see supporting Scripture verses in your author's comments, as this should be foundational to your entry.
6. No more than two entries per person- your two entries MUST be different forms.
7. Sixty entries tops- if we get that many!
(SEE UPDATE BELOW)JUDGING INFORMATION:
Since I'm a teacher, I have a very specific way I "grade" things- it will be the same with your entries. Therefore, you ALL have the SAME chance of winning.
If you have any questions, IM me!
If I make any changes, I'll edit here!
PRIZES:
1st Place- Gold Trophy and 300 pts.
2nd Place- Silver Trophy and 200 pts.
3rd Place- Bronze Trophy and 100 pts.
Honorable Mentions- depends on how many entries we get
UPDATE (as of 5-26-06)
Well, from observing the lack of entries, I'm going to assume that this contest is harder to most people out there than I thought! Therefore, I'm extending the deadline a few more days. Also, I've lowered the limit of entries to fifty, as I really don't think we'll get than many anyway!
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on June 10, 2006
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Hello, contestants!
I'm sorry this took a little while to judge- life outside the computer must go on! But I've finally gotten to it!
Here is my method of madness (point system) for judging this contest:
1)Honorary 10 pts. for entering
2)Spelling/Grammar/Word Usage- 10 pts.
3)Fluency- 10 pts.
4)Form (meter, if applicable)- 10 pts.

7)Supporting Scripture- 10 pts.
8)"Extras"- 10 pts.
9)Followed rules- 10 pts.
10)"Wow" Factor- 10 pts.
There were two poems that came VERY close in the points they received. The clincher was #7- Supporting Scripture... that means there should've been more than just a reference. But, over all, the three winners really do deserve these!

Silver- -Belle
Bronze- Billbard

This contest intrigues me, I will see what I can come up with
-
WOW! This is quite a challenge and an incredible contest that you both have come up with. The forms you have are challenging. I've attempted only Triolet and Palindrome. The rest are new to me. I will check out the examples at Shadowpoetry and work hard on this. I love the challenge! Thank you so much for coming up with this. I look forward to reading the entries you receive on this contest. May the best win!
Best,
Charishma
-
ah shame you are not allowing prewrites here as i have a pantoum form poem titled the pantoum of god. it is ideal for this contest
-
After teaching high school for so many years, I thought my testing days were over..Would love to enter a piece in your contest..just don't want to chance a failing grade...
-
Great! We are excited to see all the different poems we get. We are hoping for a good lot. Enter twice if you want but they have to be different forms. Thanks for the comment.

We are also looking forward to the entries we read. I am hoping we get a vast amount but you never know. Thanks for the comment and remember you can enter twice with different forms.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
Sorry we are not changing our minds on Prewrites... BUT you have TWO full weeks to come up with an amazing poem and we would be honored if you entered. You can even enter twice with different forms. Thanks for the comment.

If it praises and glorifies the Lord then it could never fail. We would rather a failing grade that praised God in the way you knew how (one of the forms of course) than nothing. Come in and amaze us... show us a what a great teacher can bring. I am not a teacher just Heismysong... hehehe I failed English LOL.
Thanks for the comment.

Bummer! Sorry I missed this one!
-
It is open until June 1st. I don't know why in some places it says it is being Judged who knows. LOL. But you can still enter as far as I know. If it won't let you enter, let me know.

Okay, I'll see what I can come up with!!
-
Pantoum is not one of the choices- sorry!
-
Could it be a Biblically Jewish symbol? :-D Sorry, I just thought it funny that for suggestion 3 you mentioned two symbols from events thousands of years before Jesus appeared on the scene. :-D Thanks for challenging me!
-
Yes this is fine. Thanks for asking. God is so good.

Jeri -
I am sure you could try. Although we are not hindu by any means so really it would be better if it was a bible based thing. Thanks so much.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
but i know nothing "firm' about bible
..we have bhagvad gita as our bible
and it much older than bible
-
I would IM Heismysong directly and ask her then. She will not be online until 3:30 or so Eastern time US. She will be able to tell you for sure. Thanks for asking first.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
Lets see..other wise there is always a next time
thankies anyways
-
Outstanding
I am sorry this is a little advance for me. I love the idea and see you have some poems. The best of luck. I come back read what was wrote. Too tired to go on.
May God bless you richly
-
I like the idea about this contest, and with specific poetic forms in mind that will set me to thing. I look forward to all the entries too!
-
too much
i don't know any of those forms
yes, i am ashamed
-
I have no idea why you don't have more entries than you do. I think it is because seducing spirits are off trying to teach our Christian poets pagan practices and their drowning in the web and design of it. I will enter this if I can but have limited computer time right now. RC
-
Great idea for a contest im new at poetry with all the stuff you want so I am not going to be doing poetry....I would do a sermon and it wouldn't have poetry but very good luck with your contest
-
ANything is worth a try... Some of these forms are very simple... I am by no means an English major and can do some. Come on and try something new for this contest.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
Can't wait to see yours!!! Come on in and enter. Some of these forms are very easy. I can even do them and I am pretty new to poetry forms in general. Thanks for clicking and commenting.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
Thank you for your comment. These are pretty simple forms. It will be neat to see what people come up with. Thanks again.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
This is a great contest. I don't know why I didn't see it sooner! I am sorry and I will try to write for it! You should have way more entries. I hope all is well with you as the school year comes to a close. I have had a hard 4th quarter healthwise but - praise the Lord - only 11 1/2 more days. God bless you mightily - joanne
-
Cute. I am sure some will show up near the end of the time. I am hoping some come soon. My sister is doing a great in writing so I can't wait to read the rest of the entries and how we judge them. Thanks for the comment.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
Thank you for your comment. We are strictly taking the forms on the list. My sister (Heismysong) is very good at some of them and I am ok at them. I am sure you can come up with something. Thanks again.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
I am not sure how many days she has left. I know she wouldn't mind a few more entries for sure. I homeschool yearround so we don't end. I hoping that she can come visit me some time this summer. Thanks for the comment.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
I should have liked to have entered this - but at the moment am feeling too weak from chemotherapy to attempt anything new... And you do not want prewrites.
-
I'm so sorry about that. I am sure there will be another before too long where we allow prewrites. Thanks so much for writing though. Just keep watching.
Because He Lives,
Beka -
Thank you again, for the Silver Trophy. I enjoyed this contest! God bless you, Belle
