Contest: For the Cat Over the Moon

Over lunch yesterday my friend mentions how she is tired of going to so many funerals. Too many deaths occured in her life. Ironically, in the middle of the night, her sister is run over in an accident. Thanks to the helmet she was wearing while on her moped her sister is still alive and now in the ICU albeit unconscious. She was however very horribly injured and the police have no idea who hit and run.

This contest is dedicated to my friend, who is my only “friend” where I live – a totally awesome Cat from the Moon. She is terribly upset, and because of this I am just as. She is in a state of shock, loss, hurt, and confusion and I’m not exactly sure what other way there is to comfort her besides such a contest.

It bothers me that I’m awkward at these things.

Since she is not a part of this community and you do not know her, I would prefer the entries to revolve around things that interest her and bask her in Lethe.

Comforting things for her include cats, Tori Amos, anime, and candles.

You could also write poems about aspirations or the goal achieving process for the confined.

Or simply write your best wishes down for her sister if you feel like they can come truly from the heart.

15 – 30 line limitations, any form except standard rhyme i.e. aabb or abab

Do not curse, wet your panties, or type like an idiot.
I won’t appreciate it and neither will she.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 26, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 500
  • Final notes:
I wanted to thank everyone very, very, very much for participating! My friend is just as grateful for all these wonderful entries. She’s gotten her copy and will be reading them for her sister when she gets the chance (which is doing MUCH better now)!

As for the contest I wish I could give everyone an equal share for their efforts; but in the end I decided to give the awards based on my friends reactions to each. If you did not win a trophy, please IM me a link to a poem of yours that you would like me to comment on and I will in full detail as thanks.

    Thank you again;

Gold – My Faithful Friend by Mickie27
Silver – I Wish For You by cherche –d -ame
Bronze – I Pray to the Earth by andrewwarhola

    believe in hope

i wish her a good recovery....this happened to a friend of mine who loved cats. so we got this kitten and hid it in our bags and took it into the hospital for her to feel and hear purring.....which she remembered.....amazing what animals can do for us....the nurses knew because of the meows but did not say much just to be careful not to get caught. love the artwork you have created. my thoughts and wishes with you and your friend....

Please pass on my very best wishes to your friend. I would like to write a poem but I feel a little 'dry' in that area right now - will try and come back. I will pray for her and I hope that she finds this comforting. Love and peace, Bethan x

The Cat Never Wins In This House

The cat never wins in this house
(He says - opening yet another tin
    of sardines and evaporated milk)
I am the boss in this humble home
(He says - changing the cat litter
tray and putting out fresh water)
I picked the cat when I saw his cute face.

The cat laughs in the background
And shouts - Stroke me - Right now!

Wow that is so horrible, i am so sorry to hear about this. My mother always says it comes in threes and i believe it, because a few years ago my grandmother died, then her daughter bonnie, and then janet her other daughter. Im amazed at how things like that happen. It just seems so cruel.

Tell your friend were praying for the recovery.

Wow, this is a very nice idea....However, I currently cannot think of anything to write at the moment that would strike as "sympathetic" or "compassionate." I will keep your friend in my prayers, and by reading the entries listed above, I can tell, you are going to have to make some touch decisions for the trophies. One thing is for sure: You are going to have some incredible poems for your friend. Surely, we will keep both of you in our thoughts and prayers, because that's the AP way....

Best of luck, and keeping you in mind,

    *Debbie*

I am not submitting a poem but my prayers are with her. If you would like, you can give her a copy of my prayer"Oh Great Spirit"! In the meantime, I light candles and burn incense in honor of her and her Sister along with my blessings of hope and love.

How good to see that the nurses keep up with their reading! I have seen several scholarly articles in the past few years about the contribution that cats and dogs can make to the healing process. I was in hospital three weeks ago... and someone brought in a dog to visit a patient in our unit - all with the doctors' approval! And as I write this, my "comfort-cat" is sitting on my desk - purring splendidly... but with a certain body-language that implies: "I am NOT going to sleep, as it ought to be breakfast time any minute now!"
