In my mind, this is wrong. The elk population in Alaska is not at risk of extinction, but the wolves will soon be if this killing continues.
Please read the information found at this website: www.defenders.org/wildlife/wolf/alaska.html and write a poem or letter in response to your gut reaction of the information. I will allow pre-writes for those who are already familiar with this situation, but your poem must fit this criteria.
My rules are simple:
1) No cursing
2) No STicKy CApS
3) No attacking any other entrant for his/her beliefs
Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to your writings. Please hurry up and enter as I am only allowing 20 entries.
UPDATE
Thanks to a donation from my friend, cherche -d -ame, I now have points for second and third place. Points will be awarded as follows:
First Place 500 Points
Second Place 350 Points
Third Place 150 Points
With this many points to give out... I'm looking for the best of the best! There have been some amazing entries, thus far, though. Competition will be tough!

Hi, man will not stop until he has destroyed everything, he is avid, selfish and the worse animal on the earth, running an animal till it dies of exaustion is barbaric, perhaps a taste of their own medicine might change their minds, the whole thing makes me feel sick,I wish you all the best with your comp, the only problem is it will not stop the killing,Di
-
Hi Di, thanks for your comments. I know poetry here probably won't stop the killing, but it will bring a greater awareness to what is going on. This issue has been brought to the state supreme court in Alaska, and still the killing continues legally. It's very sad.
-
It is good to see people take heart of this issue. I acttually posted this link, and emailed it to several friends. I think a refuge for wolves in Alaska is a fanttastic way to save them. However that takes money. On the site you posted you can "adopt a wolf" and it will be taken to available refuges. I, myself, adopted four. For every one you save, fifteen die. However for every one you save, many more will be born over the years. The beauty and majesty of wolves have always been dear to my heart, just look in my living room to see. LOL. Thanks for making a contest for this wonderful cause. I will see if my weary mind can pen an appropriate write.
Blessed be
~~Serenity~~

before i enter i have a prewrite about a wolf, its called the sleeping wolf. I think it doesn't have anything to do with your contest, but tell me what you think?
-
Best of luck with the contest.
I have always liked the wolf and well it seems that some hunters go to any lengths to get a bigger game. A shame this is happening. I have native American blood in me and the senseless slaughter of these noble animals is appalling. -
You know how many people wolves have attacked and killed? ZERO
-
@Repent, maybe not killed, but my grandpa lives in Nome and one of the natives there got attacked by one wolf.
-
They are also, by the way, passing a law about the wolf killings. We're hearing about it in Alaska Studies Class.
-
I signed a petition to stop the killing of wolves by aeriel attacks at www.thepetitionsite.com I think hunting of any animal is wrong...I can understand like if someone is starving and must kill a deer or something to survive...but I don't really approve of it...it is very sad
-
most villages live off the wild and hunting, which people don't like and complain about, but entire villages can't rely on wonder bread and snickers bars to live, I lived in Nome for awhile, everything is way overpriced, people can't afford to live off the grocery stores, they HAVE to hunt. NEED to hunt, I myself have hunted and killed. But the killing of wolves, whiel I see sense as to why, is unecessary, and I am prety sure that the corpses are not put to good use, like feeding villages like nome, unakleet..

Awesome idea
This is a really great idea, to get awareness out there!
This format can be used in alot of general areas.
(i.e.) Things that we need to get peoples attention and votes on. Like the "partial birth abortions?" Same aspects, It should Not be allowed! -
I agree with you, Onyx. Here is the difference.... There are those who need to hunt for subsistence, and they use every part of the animal with none to waste. And then there are those who want to hunt for the sake of saying they have killed another animal. Yes, they may eat the meat, but that is the only part of the animal they use. The rest is left to rot.
-
You obviously do not know the culture much to be saying that. They use the pelts, they eat both the meats and the guts (yes, I've tried ..) and sometimes even use the bones. So no, thats not true.
-
As an Alaskan, I understand the need to keep the balance between the two animal population. I have always opposed man's aerial hunting and feel that it should be banned. Nature needs to maintain her beautiful creatures and quite honestly, neither animal is better than the other. They both survive well because of each other for this is the way of Nature in her finest. It is man that has upset her balance with his greed and need to overpower her. We have done more harm to this wonderful living planet and seem hell bent on continuing for our own greed and power needs. However, Nature is fighting back in her own way and those of us who listen to Her will help her to heal and spread her beauty once more. Our voices may be small now, but there will come a time when ours will be the loudest and when that happens, Nature will once again reign supreme in her loving ways.
I love this contest and although I am not entering as I don't care for the options that you have, please do not think that I will not be watching and reading. This is one contest that I am definitely interested in seeing what thoughts come out of the artists here.
Please accept my congratulations on holding a contest that does not fit in the norm and one that has captured my interest. (something not easily done) -
LOL.. almost forgot. I am featuring this contest for you in the hopes that you will get many more entries. Hugs.
Lady Sylvyr -
Thank you for your comments and for featuring this for me!

You are most welcome. I live in Texas but Alaska is truly my home.

in my country we like to round up and hunt ginger people, although I am aghast that this is happening to loveable fluffy wolves I must say what a great idea! hunting in helicopters, if we applied that to the hunting of gingers we wouldnt have to go near the freaks of nature.
good luck with the wolf saving, sincerely.
I am off to recommend to the normal haired people of my country that we buy a helicopter and high powered rifles.
ps, couldnt you dress the wolves as elks? until elk season begins at least. -
I do know how close to your heart this subject has to be
, as it is to mine. I have read quite a few articles about it...I am thoroughly disgusted with man-kind in all areas of what they do to any wildlife
We belong to the Defenders of Wildlife organisation , and I do hope it makes a small difference.I do not think I will have the time to enter your contest , but please know that you have my whole-hearted support (as do the wolves)

That's horrible!!!! I hate people who do this kind of stuff. It's so disgusting how conceited people are, believing that they have the right to kill such beautiful creatures just for the heck of it, because they're doing their natural instinct, killing for food, where humans can go elsewhere. . . This is a wonderful contest, and you have my full support (even though I cannot enter
). I wish you luck, and I hope that this is stopped. Thank you for caring
<3Kat -
thanks for reminding me of this contest, i looked in the other day when you first posted it but was sidetracked, i will see if i can create a poem later today for this.
-
i love wolves i am gald some one has taking the tim eto think about them thank

A fine idea for a contest!
One of my past newspaper editors lives in Fairbanks. I will e-mail her and ask if she knows about the wolves being hunted and how the Alaskans feel about it. The people in Alaska live very insulated lives and don't care one tiny tear drop
about what the rest of the 49 states think. Their newspapers won't even carry letters to the editor from anywhere but Alaska. I refer to the newspaper in Fairbanks, "The Daily News Miner." So we can get all worked up here and be mad as hell and the folks in Alaska will just shrug and ignore us.
-
Thanks for your comments! My husband and I hope to one day live in Alaska, so I've adopted it for the time being! It would be interested to hear what your friend says. I know this issue has been taken to the courts already, and any bans on the killings have been overturned.
-
I have taken away the options. You're not the only one who said the options were too strict. All I care about is that you write to the subject of killing wolves in Alaska. Thank you!
-
I am sure you will get some gret entries to this contest. Not sure if I will get to this or not, but will maybe try. Thanks for hosting.

I love it when I see people using the contests not just to support the art of poetry but other issues they feel strongly about. Pat yourself on the back.
-
ah!I love this. I'm going to try and enter and not because of the points, but of the cause.
-
Thanks for drawing attention to this situation and giving everyone a chance to express themselves with poetry. I don't think I'll have time to write a poem for the contest, but definitely wanted to at least add a comment.
-
Absoluetly brilliant contest! Save the wolves!
-
Use them wisely.
-
I always hate it when a prewrite wins.

Thank you for reminding me of this problem of losing our sisters and brothers to slaughter. I am posting the link on everything and everywhere to bring the attention to the public. Brightest Blessings!

Hi, thanks for the bronze, congatulations to the other winners, lets hope we can help to stop the slaughter, hugs Di
