Get To Know A Poet Day!

The way the contest first read when posted "Time for another contest. Speaking of time, I wasn't able to wish everyone Happy Valentine's Day for my time ran out. I had about forty more people I wanted to wish it to. Most of you would know who you are (at least I hope you do). My Valentine's Day contest is/was a tough one to judge (at the time this contest was posted I have already viewed the other contest entries four or more times and still having a hard time judging it). I want to make up my own holiday and call it Get To Know A Poet Day! I have determined that day to be the last Saturday of every February.

Now how does this new holiday work? It's very simple! You find at random, a poet you do not know personally in any way. As a friend, comments or any communication period. At the post of this contest, you will need to seek out a poet that has three or more poems. You will read and comment on them (three to five poems should be a sufficient number, but if you choose to read and comment more I'm sure that poet will be delighted). Then you need to write a poem for this poet and put in the authors comments the links to the poems you chose to read and comment on (you can do this by copying and pasting). Once doing this, I believe you will have made a new friend and helped them with encouragement to write as well.

Rules are limited, but are still needed for some structure:

1. Prewrites will not work for this contest in any shape or form, but the contents spelled that out in an around about way.

2. Please only enter once. (You may do as many get to know poets you wish, but this will be a timely contest to judge on my part and want to limit the entries one per poet).

3. Read the content well for you need to comply with what has been stated.

(NOTE: This contest may take some time to judge after it closes next Saturday night; Get To Know A Poet Day!)"

Now the corrected version:

Time for another contest. Speaking of time, I wasn't able to wish everyone Happy Valentine's Day for my time ran out. I had about forty more people I wanted to wish it to. EXTRA NOTE: Commenting on the poets poetry is optional and has been brought to my attention with a complaint that it can't be a requirement.

Dear Ted E Bare,
We've received a complaint about your contest, Get to Know a Poet Day!, regarding it's requirement that you read and comment on other poet's work. Site policy does not permit making that a requirement in a contest as noted below.

Contests are the responsibility and choice of the poet they are created by. We do not regulate whether rules are followed, if they are judged as promised, or how many entries are allowed. Contests should not be used to spam others by requiring reading and commenting or applauding of your own or others works.

I have to ask you to change that requirement in your contest. Thanks for your cooperation.

[Moderator]

I have deleted the moderator's name for they are only doing their job. If this contest does hurt someone's feelings, I apologize for that. Just goes to show not everyone can be pleased at the same time at any given moment.

Should this contest be omitted or not, I will let everyone cast your opinion. If it needs to go then I will delete it.

So if there are more positive feedback than negative, this contest shall stay in tact.

BTW: There was never a requirement to comment on my work. I care less if you like my work or not. This is not what the contest is suppose to achieve. It was suppose to be for a poet that you know nothing about, but could grace this poet to make them feel better about themselves and their work. This is not to be a spam supported contest. Now if anyone doesn't like this contest as it is now, turn the channel!

I really do dislike that rule that you can put on the contest...i do understand what they are saying...but you didn't say that you would DQ them if they didn't. I really enjoyed this contest and think it should stay running. It helps others learn about other poets and maybe one day the 2 poets that met might become closer friends. I know i said this b4 but great job with this contest and i hope it stays running!

    Best of luck!

    Ashley,

I thank you for the support. I'm not sure if the person that did the complaining truly understood what was suppose to be accomplished here. If they did, then its' rather selfish on their part trying to keep unknown/un-noticed poets on this site to continue being that way. That's how I feel about it. It's almost like someone watching a television show that they don't want to watch, but will complain about it instead of turning the channel to watch something they like. I shall keep this contest so I don't give the other person satisfaction they feel they deserve by eliminating this contest!

    Lovely.

This one of the smartest contests I've ever seen. This isn't ill-intended at all and it's a shame that it's having problems. Stinky rule. I can't wait to make someone else's day.

I like the idea of this contest. So if I IM them telling them what i'm doing, then write a poem, hopefully based on something I think they'll like and post the names of the poems of their's that I commented on? It's a nice idea, I really admire your want to help people with friendship's. All the best and thanks again,

I think this is a great idea, one that an interactive site should allow.

You are encouraging participation and interactiveness.

    You have my support.

I apologize to you for rules that force you to look for a loophole to be able to encourage what seems a sincerely altruistic effort to expand the AP world's sense of community.

    Dear Ted E Bare,

I think this contest promotes interactivity on this site in the highest form, and the Moderator was overly zealous in coming to you with this policy infraction. (Which as I see it is not) As far as I can see it does not apply in this challenge. You are not requiring nor demanding that anyone read, and comment or leave applause on your work. You are unselfishly suggesting that they find a new poet that they have never read, someone random, and give them encouragement, and constructive critique. Isn't that what AP is all about? I say Tsk, Tsk, Tsk and shake my head at the thought that you could be cited for such a generous contest.

I will be entering this challenge ,and will make it my business to seek out a new poet from this day forward. Thank you for encouraging us to look outside the box and meet someone new. Who knows where these kinships will lead?

I am not in the least offended by the notion of this challenge, nor do I see that it breaks any site rules. Good for you for holding this contest. I say KUDOS! I also hope you get tons and tons of entries.

It would be to the discredit of AP to eliminate this challenge in my opinion! I think I may copy-cat you, and hold a contest just like this one. Not to agitate the administration but to promote interactivity. Great challenge! Great idea!

    Much Love,
    Renee

This contest is a great idea and a wonderful way to get to know the works of poets, otherwise unknown to you. Sorry someone had to report the comment requirement thing. I don't feel as if you are spamming for comments....not like it's on your work but requiring them to comment on the other persons work is a good indicator of whether they actually read the poet or scanned their bio/poetry quickly to get the "feel" for them. Oh well, that's what happens in a system that encourages others to report any infractions of site rules rather than telling them to mind their own f-ing business.

    Ted E Bare,
Has anyone told you what a superbly delicious mind and heart you have? How creative and orginaly! What an absolutely phenomninal way to reach out to others and expand your horizons! I the way you think. I will not only bookmark this so I can read new people from here. But will mark my calendar for next year! Which by the way is Feb.24 next year.
Good luck in the contest and judging. From what I see in your entries, you've already got your hands full.

What a wonderful Pay It Forward act of kindness, to encourage other poets to search out new poets. I applaud you for this. wouldn't it be great if we found such positive ways to welcome new writers?

I think people may have been frightened away from this challenge, which in my finite mind is unjust! Thank you for the BRONZE TROPHY Congratulations to all the people who were brave enough to enter inspite of administrative intervention.

    CONGRATS TO ALL THE WINNERS!

This is one of the best ideas for a challenge yet. I used to see this type of contest often before we became so NEW. Somehow the newness makes us no longer user friendly. That's sadly disheartening but we must go on with pride. Blessings to you my friend. Keep doing what you're doing.

    Much Love,

Dear Ted E thank you for the GOLD, I agree with what Renee said, it is a shame that the poets were frightened off by the rules as this is a good contest and in the old days we could run them without being penalized.
Congratulations to Poetryality and Broke and Bleeding for their wins
