Alright, I admit it. I love Donnie Darko. You can take that movie on so many levels and still get something completely different out of it than what the next person gets. There are going to be eight different choices, all inspired by the movie. Sorry, none of the more humorous quotes of the movie made it into this contest, even though there are plenty of them out there. (Smurfs... 'Tell me Elizabeth, how exactly does one...' Chut Up!) Anyways, most of these choices will turn out dark poems or ones about society, so... yeah... Good luck!
*Prewrites allowed for the next few days*
*Any genre is welcome, so long as the poem fits the topic*
1. If you could change time to fix something, what would you do, would the resulting alternate universe be a better place for it, or would things end up just as bad?
2. Is the death of someone or something tragic if they never feared death when they were alive?
3. Is today's youth lost to apathy?
4. Is darkness a necessary part of life? Is it necessary to develop into a stronger person, self reliant person?
For any of the first four, I want you to make me believe what you are saying. Make me feel disgusted in the apathy of youth, or make me think that you can fix the world by just changing one thing. I'll warn you that if you choose option one, I am more partial to believe that things will turn out as bad or worse than they did in the first place. If you wish to show the opposite, go ahead. I will judge fairly, but take the previous sentences as a hint.
Donnie Darko Quotes
5. 'Every living creature on earth dies alone.'
6. A quote from The Destructors, that was in the movie:
'It was as though this plan had been with him all his life, pondered through the seasons, now in his fifteenth year crystallized with the pain of puberty.'
Beautiful words... Now take what it means to you and turn it into your own. Could be about anything, doesn't necessarily have to do with what it means in the short story or the movie. If you would like to read the story in full, go here- oldwww.upol.cz/~prager/e_texts/destructors.htm
7. 'I find it kind of funny/ I find it kind of sad/ the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had/I find it hard to tell you/ I find it hard to take/ When people run in circles/It's a very very/ Mad World'
8. 'Dear Roberta Sparrow,
I have reached the end of your book and... there are so many things that I need to ask you. Sometimes I'm afraid of what you might tell me. Sometimes I'm afraid that you'll tell me that this is not a work of fiction. I can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.'
(especially the last sentence in this one.)
Okay, for the quotes options, I expect you to use them as a basis for whatever you are writing about. If you choose option five, I don't expect you to use that line in it, unless you wish to. Only do it if you feel it is necessary. What I want from option six is better described right with it.
Now, the rules! (What fun)
1. No sticky caps. I know I am new to the site, but I have never seen anyone use sticky caps, but if I decide against making this clear, I will surely get that shoved in my face.
2. Profanity is acceptable if it is necessary. You should have the proper judgment on that.
3. I really do not see the need for erotica in this contest, so please... don't submit it unless you can prove to me that it is *truly* necessary.
4. Please, please, PLEASE use the spell-check. I beg of you, it isn't that tough. And also, attempt to use the correct homophones. To/too/two, there/they're/their, write/right, hair/hare... that sort of thing. Oh yeah, also no chat-speak, unless it is necessary, and good luck proving that it is.
5. I will not disqualify you unjustly. If you submit something completely off topic or break one of these rules, I will, but not just because I don't like your poem or something. All will be treated equally.
6. This is an afterthought, but I would really like to be able to tell which topic you are writing about.
PRIZES
Okay, now the good part
First prize- 300 points
Second prize- 150 points
Third Prize- 75 points
If any topic has more than one entry in it, and none of them makes the top three, the best in the topic will be counted as an honorable mention, and get applause and ten points.

Wow. I wish prewrites were allowed in this contest! I just wrote a poem that was Donnie Darko-ish. Well, people say it was. c.c; I might enter if I think of something else.
-
Please, do enter! Sorry, I really didn't think that prewrites would be that much of an issue with this contest as I haven't really seen any other contests like this, and I didn't think that many people would write 'Donnie Darko-ish' poems. I am sure they have existed, but I just haven't been around long enough to find out.
-
It's okay. It's already in another contest anyways c.c; But it fits along the lines of number 2. It's called 'Tragic Rabbit'. ^^
-
ahh good contest that ima join here, I found number 5 quote, fingers crossed I can write on it ok
thanks for opening this contest and good luck here!!!!
-
that film rules so much. When I first bought the DVD, I watched it 3 times a day. For 2 weeks.
Anywho... I'll probably have a go -
choir angel- good luck on it, im sure you will be able to do really well with that quote
naznomarn- this movie has a lot of sentimental value to it ontop of it rocking my socks, i have seen it countless times and just watched it again. good luck if you decide to take a shot! -
just got it done and I hope it is fine for this contest.
-
it fits the contest very well, good luck!
-
I love Donnie Darko. The story and everything about it. My poetry is usually strange like the movie but I'm not sure if I can come up with a good Donnie Darkoish poem.
-
its worth a try! i mean it doesnt really have to be like the movie, just from a theme inspired by it... i hope you decide to enter! btw i like your saying thingy. love the inferno
-
Looks like my prizes will be going up! I don't know why but the feedback I have been receiving today has been outstanding! No promises, but second and third place will probably double in prize points. Great job to the people who have already entered, and I can't wait to see the entries I get over the next week or two
-
This is probably THE best contest I've seen on myspace. I love this movie and everything in it. Love the qoutes. Oh yeah, and if you wanted to credit the song, it's by Gary Jules, who is covering the Tears for Fears version of "Mad World."
-
yeah i know that, i have both versions of said song on my computer, just didnt think it was completely necesary since i was giving the credit to donnie darko which at least partially owns the rights to said music, since they put it on the soundtrack and such... i hope you enter my contest! (btw, this isnt myspace :-P)
-
Wooh I'm gonna go see what I can come up with...
-
awesome! good luck, and i love your motto. its so true
-
more points guys! i got my first trophy and it got fed right back into the contest...
-
I am not going to enter this contest, plainly because i'd much rather just sit back and read everyone else's entrys, its more fun that way, but i'd just like to say GOOD LUCK! to everyone. Oh...and yay for Donnie Darko! I'm extremley obsessed with it it's totally amazing...he is sooo cool. Anyway, i'm not gong to go into a rant, Good Luck again.
Shadow x x x
Woot for Donnie Darko! *drools* -
you should enter ::winning smile:: you could still read everyone elses... ::giggle:: no, but i love to see a fellow fan
-
first of all, i love you. donnie darko is the bessst. im going to try real hard to think of something for this.anything in particular that you'd like to see?
L♥VE andreaa -
i would be honored by an entry. please, do, and tell your friends to too! (just kidding you dont have to!)
-Liz
-
hmmmm.....self relieve as in emerson or thereau? I dont remember which one it was. That would amke an interesting contest, and if you have no idea wtf im talking about then IU strongly suggest that you read "self reliance" before you even think about having a contest that involves it. But im a big donnie darko fan, and its been a while since ive wrote something about society so yeah, ill prolly enter.
-
i really meant just the face value to be honest... and please enter. that would make me happy. good luck and happy writing!
-
Hey fluo, what is a fuckass?
-
lol! 'did you just call me a fuckass? well you can go suck a fuck!' enter please ::Grin::
-
Well explain to me fluofontis, how exactly DOES one 'suck a fuck'?
-
now anyways... moving passed sucking of fuckage... what about the smurfs?
-
Smurfs? The whole gang bang scenario! It just couldn't happen! Smufrs don't even have... reproductive organs under those little white pants. I mean... what is the point of living if you don't have a dick?
-
hahaha, yeah, thats what is so illogical about being a smurf (damnit donnie, why'd you have to get all smart on us)

mehe. Who's she?
That's Grandma Death. All she ever does is goes back and forth to the mail box. But there's never any mail.
ooh... She's going for it! And... Oooh nothing there.
No dice. -
Sometimes i doubt your commitment to sparkle motion!
-
Bitch.
My son. Just called me a bitch.
You're bitchin. But you're not a bitch -
I'll tell you what he said- he told me to forcibly insert the lifeline exercise in my anus!
(remember that miss farmer bitch? yeah well my brother told her to shove a book up her ass and now hes like getting all this new shit) -
OMG i love that movie..he is so freakin hott... lol and plus i like the part about the smurfs lol now everybody that i think is little i call them a smurf. but anyways lol peace out
-
I have both versions of Donnie Darko, I too love that movie. I will have to bookmark this for a later date, hopefully it'll still be here when I review it again, if not, oh well.
But I hope to enter. I felt that that movie was one for the Oscars but a movie like that would never make it which is probably best 'cause the Oscars is a popularity contest, in my opinion.
-
Ah, this ends tomorrow -- yeah, I probably won't be able to write a piece. Oh well.
-
oh sorry - i should not have clicked on this. i haven't seen the Donnie Darko movie, but my daughter loves it.
i hope your contest goes well for you,
best wishes,
myron. -

Ooh!! I love Donnie Darko!! I rented it, and I was going to wait for my parents to watch it with them. They never had time, so I watched it late one night (friday) when I was dozing off. After watching that (it was over around 3am) I couldn't sleep. I just had so many thoughts running through my mind from that. I watched it again the next day with my parents (saturday). The day after that(sunday), I bought it and this collectable tin and necklace for $30 from Hot Topic.
Powerful, intense, incredible movie!!
