Gretna Green

i have lost count how many contests i have run, i think this is either the 4th or 5th one, for those of you who like to know that kind of thing.

What is Gretna Green?

Excelent question i am so pleased you asked! please read the following information about Gretna Green and then i will tell you what i would like for this contest, and why i am doing it.

Gretna Green has been a haven for romantic lovers for more than 250 years & this tradition is still going strong today . . .
So, how did Gretna Green become the World's number 1 marriage venue?
The Scots, like the Celts, are warm, hospitable & loving people who have always had an open & progressive attitude towards marriage. Other countries, including England & many other European countries, hold different values. Traditionally, in Scotland, a man & woman over the age of sixteen could be married by declaring themselves husband & wife in front of witnesses. In England, such marriages were prohibited by Act of Parliament in 1745 with the result that eloping couples fled to Scotland for their marriages. Gretna Green was the first changing post across the Scottish Border for the stagecoaches on the main London to Edinburgh route & so began its long association with the romance of the runaways.
The ceremonies were often carried out over the anvil with the "Blacksmith Priest" officiating. This remained the position for over 100 years ...

Then in 1857 another Act of Parliament imposed residential qualifications on the fleeting lovers, whom locals took to their hearts as they lived out the compulsory 21 days in the area before they could marry. In 1940 Parliament stepped in once again to outlaw the "Blacksmiths Priests" & their anvil marriages. Thereafter, marriages could only be conducted by a Minister of Religion or an authorised Registrar.
But the romances lived on ...

Today, with no residential qualifications for marriage in Scotland and no parental consent required for couples over 16 (unlike the regulations of many other countries) couples have continued to run away - albeit with the need to serve notice to the Registrar. Gretna & Gretna Green have attracted visitors from all over the world.
So many thousands of lovers have wed at Gretna Green that its name & traditions live in all corners of the globe ...

All modes of transport have been used to deliver couples to the anvil:
car, van, lorry, fire engine, horse & carriage, horseback, bicycle & motor bike. One couple arrived with their boat in tow ... En route to Inverness for their honeymoon on the Caledonian Canal, they stopped off at Gretna to be married, then continued up north. The boat was decorated with streamers & balloons & the traditional "Just Married" sign had been placed on the stern bedecked with a couple of L. plates. Another couple had arranged their wedding to fit in with their journey to Aviemore to take part in the International sled-pulling competitions. The 29 Huskies remained in their transporter outside the anvil whilst the marriage was being solemnised.

Wedding outfits worn at Gretna Green have been varied. When the wedding parties arrive on motor bikes resplendent in black leather; the bride is the one with the bouquet ...

Robin Hood & Maid Marion arrived at the anvil on horseback. Fortunately, the horse was tied to a tree outside the building whilst the ceremony was taking place. More than one couple has arrived without a common language & these marriages require the presence of two interpreters. You may wonder how they arrive at a point where they wanted to marry here! They may have seen Gretna Green on television as numerous TV production companies from around the world have arrived to make programmes ...however the couples arrive at Gretna Green & however they are dressed, they are all made most welcome.

OK now you have a little background on the wedding capital of the world, and your probably wondering what i want here in this crazy contest... well it's simple really. i am a us citizen and i met my sweetheart on the internet and he is a british citizen. i came over to the uk in october to see how well we would work out in real life. and amazingly enough it is working out splendidly except for one HUGE problem. we want to marry but to do this in either contry is a BIG paperwork jungle full of buricratic red tape. through much reasearch i have stumbled upon Gretna Green and this seams to be the answer. of course i still need to do a little more research but think this will fit our needs like a pair of much needed sisors to cut through all that red tape.

what i want for this contest is for you to pick any time period from the begining of the Gretna Green story until the present day and tell me a story. you want to get married and for what ever reason you cant so you plan to go to Gretna Green to do so. i must have full charictor development and i will want to know everything that happens on your journey and after you elope what happens with your family's reaction. are you punished? is your journey racked with danger? why Gretna Green? how did you learn of this elopeing capital. your couple can be any age from 16 on up as that is the leagel marring age in Scottland. i want the colors, the smells of your flowers, the mood of the local you choose (country church, blacksmiths, the mill) all to come alive for me. i want to feel the fabrics of your charicters choice of clothing, i want to know the words of love they say to each other, i want their thoughts.  are your couple followed do they make it to Gretna Green? do they ever go home or are they on the run forever.... all of it. the more textue and the better that i can see the story the more i will like it. there are a lot of web sites on Gretna Green if you need more info to draw on, aparently Robert the Bruce hid out in a cave near there for almost a year. he was the first king of Scottland, and there was Robin Hood and Maid Marian woven into the story as well, so the history is rich to draw on. also if you wish to choose to tell the story from a blacksmith or a priest who preforms all of these marriages i would like that too. anything creative. dont worry about length, i will get into it even if it is a long story. but i am a slow reader with dislexia so it may take me a little while to get trough all the works so please be patient with me.

RULES

these are the same as all contests here, and i know most of you have tead them all a million times so ill be brief

1 no cb skp no StIky caPs CrAP as this is just plain dumb i have never seen a poem here with either but i am sure there is some one board enough to try it. no ALL CAPS either i dont think you need to shout at me.
2 please spare my eyes and put a readable color on your background these are stories and i dont want to highlight forever just to read them. i often use the highlighter to mark my place and can not do that if i have to highlite the whole thing. if i cant read it ill ask that it be changed or i will just skip it, and since your time is valuable i dont want to skip anything you have taken the time to write so please be kind when choosing them.

3 i am an adult you can cus or do erotica as long as you do 2 things make it fit in to the story with out detracting from it and warning notes in your 2 line box to protect the young eyes that might read it.

4 these stories should not be about cutting as i feel that it doesnt fit here. i dont know why this is such a neeeded rule as it seams with out it i always get someone who loves the morbid. morbid and horor may fit into this but i dont think it would involve self harm.

5 your stroy may be dark light happy sad a thriller or just simple and sweeet anything goes as long as it is a story not a poem. if you want to write a poem then i think you need to make the poem into a story or make the story rhyme throughout.

6 this is my BIGGEST and most important rule. be original and creative! this is a rather limited subject even with the extensive history and background you can draw from. i dont want every one to be in a white dress or to have the same ole vowes as every marrage on the planet. that is boaring at its best and i know the calaber of your creativity. i read a lot of stuff from here so use it people.

7 no prewrites. i highly dought any one has written a Gretna Green story before, but if you have then you may copy and paste it here just change the title and when the contest is over if you dont want 2 of the same story delet the one with the worst tital.

8 ONE entry only!

9 as you all can see i have dislexia and wont notice spelling errors but for the others who may read your entry hit the button. i want to save you from the critics who will atack it all. i of course wont.

POINTS

the best part right!?

ok because i have to put a value in its the minium, but i am stating this right now. i have invested more than 3000 points in my last 2 contests and this one will be no exception. there will be many more points than 300 and there will be cups for 1,2,and 3. and there will be points also for hm's as i see fit. everyone has opertunities to snatch other points from me aside from the contest. here is how.

read one of my stories, preferably one you have not read, and comment on it constructively. i have a tendancy to write long comments and will comment on all stories entered. so you can snach an additional 10 points my adding the words 'blue buttons' to your comment on my story. if your comment is extremely helpful and indepth to me i will give more than 10 points to you. this is for each and every story you read of mine. so you have a potential of getting more than 100 points just doing this. but please dont forget the blue buttons or no points will be awarded for that comment. this is for contest entrents only as i have had people try and get points without entering so please also put the name of your entry into the comment too. this helps me a lot.

also i like to award 2 other awards and so they will each be for 100 points. its easy to get these too.
the first way is to comment on all other entries. be helpful not just the simple one liners. the best critic wins these points. and the second way to get them is to win the peoples choice. yes that is right you will all get a single vote for the ONE story you like best. i dont need to know your 1st 2nd and 3rd choices just your 1st choice. this sometimes varies from my own thoughts and that is ok that is why there will be this award. this means you will get an im from me when the contest closes and you will be asked to cast your vote. you must read to vote. or you can choose to pass if you dont want to read other stories but when i ask for the vote you will need to tell me that you pass and why you choose not to help others on this site perhaps learn something from your words. you see this is in hopes that i will have a hard time with the best critic award and may have to give out more points to you. last time i only had 2 people out of 24 snatch up the critic points and only 4 got points for reading one of mine. these are easy points and you should take advantage of them while i feel generous. again these points are more work for me and so are for contest partisapants only. all votes will be through a private im only thank you.

now please have fun and get writing. if i feel there are not enough entries i will extend this out as long as needed to make it worth the points i plan on spending. impress me my friends as i know you all can

and if you want to put a side note comment on this page telling me what you think about me and my sweetheart eloping i would love to know.

NEW EDIT~

ok all i am extending this contest to give you all a bit more muse time as that seams to be a general need of the interested parties here.

on a side note the wonderful little loop hole that Gretna Green promiced is now also being buggered up with buricratic red tape. how agervating that government of 2 friendsly countries can tangel up the path of love sooooooo much. oh well i am not giving up ill find my much needed sisors some whare and cut through it all to marry.... i know i will....

NEWEST EDIT~

i have extended yet again and will do so out past the middle end of march as my partner has been kicked off of ap until mar 18 so since they ban by ip addy i have to go to the libary to get on to the site. so i am extending the contest untill i get enough time to read all entries at my leasure, so there is no rush to complete and edit your works here and then i will hand out all points too. i am keeping track of you who are giving me the comments for the extra points and will award them all at the same time so keep on earning them and i am sorry for the extended delays but i hope it helps you all pollish them up to steller by my judging time thank you. your friend M.C.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 21, 2006
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
first off i need to say that even though i had only a handful of entries and that 4 of these were never finished, i am still very pleased with the entries i did recieve, even the unfinished ones that i hope in the future are finished and little im's sent to me to let me know so i may go read the endings. this was one of the hardest to judge because each of you took on this chalenge and did your own research to make this contest truely rich with stories and poems. i have read all of your works more than once and in some cases 4 or 5 times. this is because i wanted to take in every word and pick the best. ok so now for the winners....since that is what your all waiting for isnt it?

gold and 300 points is going to the horsehoe nail weddig righ by dreamweaver. this piece is told supurbly. the testures and charictor development have made this story a publishable piece. i left a comment on this one saying i felt like one of the children sitting around the mother's skirts to hear the story.... that to me is the mark of a good story. so you have snatched the gold congrats!
silver cup and 200 points goes to someone who told me they couldnt write a story as that wasnt their forta' but they lied as their story was full of magick and had all the elements of a good farie tale. much to my pleasure i am pleased you took on this chalenge, as you very much can write stories, and i hope to see more of them penman as your story the petals of desire is the silver winner.
the bronze cup and 100 points goes to the only person who took a true story about their brother and treated us all to a real gretna green legend. i love it and i am glad i asked you to go back and fill us in a bit more as your added section of the close shave was well worth it. that story gives me hope for my own gretna green story. thank you for sharing. the bronze winner is for the love of linda by wishintreeuk.
i have 3 hm's to award in this contest as all of these stories impressed me too and narrowly missed the trophie podium. in no particular order they hm's and 50 points go to stonelion, dk akaluniticserene, and dawn vickery. all of these stories are well worth the read. i have another hm for the best of the unfinished stories too. and they will each get 25 points they go to petty foibles and cafegroundzero.
    but wait there is more.....
there are 4 best critic awards in this contest which i must say is outstanding! so well done to you all who help this site so much you each will recieve 100 points and you are as follows....
stonelion, penman, wishintreeuk, and dreamweaver. you all managed to comment on every entry brovo.
several of you dropped blue buttons and it was so fun picking them all up. so here are the points and winners of those:
    stonelion you get 30 points
dk akaluniticserene you get 30 points
    penman you get 50 points
petty foibles you get 70 points and
dreamweaver your the big winner with 80 points thank you all for this as you will never know how helpful you all have been.
but wait there is more, you wouldnt think i would forget the one i know you all covet... the one that says your the best by your peers, now would you? no i cant forget the peoples choice award... so here it is drum roll please....
the horseshoe nail wedding ring by dreamweaver you win the 100 points and here are some of the nice things that people said about your story....
"My Vote and the reason why... Right from the outset this story made the reader feel as if they were right there listening to a wonderful story unfold!" comment submited by wishintreeuk
"I liked the details of the story and i liked that it was a story being told as a story. There were also several instances where it made me smile. I read every single story there and it is the only one i can remember in tetail. If a story can make that much of an impression on me it gets my vote." by stonelion.
thank you all for a wonderful contest i am currently running an new chalenge and i would love to see you all there in that one. so please come give it a try. the new contest is called hard chalenge lyrical twist. thank you again and keep a look out for your points they will all be coming soon and just to let you all know i am giving out over 1400 to you in all in this contest, so i am glad to see you like the free points, go get some more in my new contest.

Just wanted to let you know that requiring commenting for awards is in violation of new contest rules:

    allpoetry.com/special/shortpolicy

You can suggest or encourage commenting, but you can't make it a requirement of the contest. -N

I would like to take a moment and thank you kindly for the invite into your contest. I am honored you would consider giving me a personal invite.

As for this contest, I must admit it has greatly peaked my interest. I, cannot however promise anything for certain other than I will try and see if my muse will dance for me. I have taken otice it is scheduled to end on the fifth of Feb and I am scheduled to go on vacation on the fourth of Feb. I hopefully can manage something between now and then.

However I do have one question. Would you accept a possible collaberation if one was to come about?

Again I thank you and I must say I truly love this idea for a contest

    Blessings

I'll try to do a story, but I'm not promising anything. I've been busy with school work (unfortunately) and have to try to keep my grades from completely plummiting alltogether -- But I will try. I'd start on it now, but I'm not at my house. I'll try to remember to start on it when I get home though. But Gretna Green really is a good idea, and I've never even heard of it -- sounds nice.

Oh man.. I am sorry I missed this contest. I was just home where we were playing word games and I said "I am thinking of a word with green in it" and it was actually Gretna Green, although I had forgotten what it was exactly. There is a Mopther Goose ryhme about walking around the green something or other and that was what I was thinking about. Luckily, someone else knew what Gretna Green was that night although no one guessed what I was thinking.

    Patience! and courage.

Are we supposed to vote, then on which one of these we think is best? I'll re-read the contest comments and read some more entries.

You know, why don't you try writing to the Queen, and see if she and her court can help you cut through that red tape? If there is any way I can help by writing letters in your support, please do let me know. I'm sure it's all for the best. You two keep getting to know one another, and plan and prepare for a wonderful life together!

Firstly let me apologise for the delay in congratulating all the winners. Due to ill health and a failed computer I have been offline for some weeks now.
I thank everyone for there very kind comments. I truly appreciate them.
Best wishes to all in the future,
    Sammy
