Enlightened Masters, Teachers, Philosophers or Saints

All Religious faiths and philosophies, including Gnostics, are welcome to enter.

This contest is in tribute to ALL enlightened Masters, Teachers, Philosophers or Saints who have graced our planet. One small catch, however, is that you are NOT to write about Jesus, Buddha or Mohammed. Not because we do not appreciate these masters, but because they are the obvious ones who have influenced the most people. So, we want you to pick a different one. Living or dead does not matter since they are enlightened and have an affect on us either way.  Write a poem as tribute to them and their work. Or write something about how they have inspired you in your life. What difference have they made in the world?

We do not have a set rule on what you write about, or how they have inspired you. We are looking for good poetry, in any form whatsoever. Rhyming is acceptable, but it better be very, very good to be considered for a trophy. Free style is our preference, but do what you will in this regards. Even Haiku is accepted, although again it better be very good, and something that will wow our socks off.  Sestinas, Sonnets, Prose, Epics...all long style poems welcome...not more than 50 lines though.

There are no rules outside of the obvious standards for writing and that we request you read and comment on your fellow contestants in the contest. This is a respectful thing to do and it will introduce you to other poets here on AP. We are all in this writing thing together, and mutual respect for our craft is a wonderful thing.  Although, not established as an official rule, if the final choice for trophies is a close call, the person who has commented the most on other entries will receive our vote.  So, we like to be paradoxical...it really is a rule!

Here is a list of potential people to write about. If you have one of your own, by all means feel free to do so. Please IM one of us so we can add them to the list, in case anyone else would like to write about them as well.

Maharaji
Don Miguel Ruiz
Neale Donald Walsch
Gary Renard
Marianne Williamson
Gandhi
Martin Luther King
Martin Luther
Maya Angelou
Shamans (You pick one)
Red Cloud
Crazy Horse
Chief Joseph
Tecumseh
Buddha Maitreya
Dannion Brinkley
Carlos Castaneda
Krishnamurti,
Thai That (sp?)
Dali Lama
Mother Meera
Amamachi
Ken Wilber
Byron Katie
Leslie Temple Thurston
Carl Jung
Mother Teresa
Saint Sophia
Saint Guadalupe
Gearge Lucas (per request)
Antony de Mello (per request)
Doreen Virtue (per request)
Nietzsche (per request)

And of course, the list as endless and infinite as their teachings!

To reiterate, write about any aspect of these people that you choose. Many of those on this list have influenced our lives immensely, and we would like to hear how your Teachers have influenced you. No writing about Jesus, Buddha or Mohammed! They have enough written about them.

Please include who you picked, why you selected them or a quote by them, in your author's comments.  WE request this so that others will learn in the process and know who you are writing about.  Thank you.

No pre-writes allowed. We would like fresh, inspiring pieces to read. This contest will close in after 7 days.

This is a contest for 1400 points.

1st Place: 800 Points and Gold Trophy
2nd Place: 400 Points and Silver Trophy
3rd Place: 200 Points and Bronze Trophy.

There will be Honorable Mentions and applause given to those entries that are deemed worthy of receiving them. Any questions, IM Zayra or myself and we will endeavor to answer them.

No more than two entries per person!

Now, go write!

Additional Update as of 12/16/05: We are not looking for poems on family members, friends or those who involved in your pesonal lives. Rather, we are looking for poems on the mystics, the sages, who have touched thousands with their words or deeds. Those who are well known to many, not just a few. This certainly is not a slam against family members or friends. It is simply what we are looking for in this contest. Perhaps we should have kept the list small, but there are so many to choose from that this seemed an unfair task, so we left it open. Perhaps in time we will do a contest looking for how family memebers and friends have inspired. Until that time, please do not include them in this contest. With all due respect, we ask you this.

GREAT contest idea! Really, it is good to see that some of the other Masters will be honored in this one. And, as you probably know, I am pleased to see many of mine listed here. Ooooh, which one to choose...
This will be fun. Can we do more than one? (Not that I've been on fire lately, but, you never know)

Ohhhhh. At this sacred time of the year to have such a magnificant contest. Bravo! So many of my teachers are on your list, some that most would not consider (like Crazy Horse) Wonderful! I have one however not there. I will IM you cause I feel an idea brewing....

For so many religion is like a taboo; conversation about it I mean. This is a great contest because people can express their ideas in an open forum and not get into a virtual fist fight. However since I am a coward I will not be entering. LOL

You say "No writing about Jesus, Buddha or Allah!", however the lattermost is God, unless I mistake what Mohammed wrote. Interesting contest anyway.

Never heard of him, so I am unable to share your mirth. Therefore I'll let Zayra decide on this one.

Oh wait... we have to write about people we LIKE? I mean, some seriously bad philsophical and religious "teachers" have taught me things too... just nothing real positive. lol. Crap, I'm really going to have to think hard if I'm going to come up with a NICE write about someone. Sheesh. lol.

I am a little confused. Does it have to be one of the people actually on the list? Or can it be another spiritual leader that we know of. I understand the 3 that you are not looking for, but I am unclear as to whether we can enlarge upon the list you provided.

Thistle, it can be another spiritual teacher or guru. Simply IM myself or Zayra with who this person is. Unless it is someone who we feel doesn't qualify, which is unlikely, we will "approve" it, and also add to the list for others to consider writing about.
