Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 30, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Thank you for entering the contest. If it inspired you or got you to read anything by Gibran, Ghalib or Neruda, I consider it successful, and hope that you enjoyed it.

The contest was judged on 5 categories - each of 10 marks each - namely content, expression, rhythm, selected poem, and finally, reflection of inspiration in the submitted poem. Based on this, poems were marked on a scale of 50 points. Sunrising, Abstract Dreamer, Fathom Me, Anasuya, Grannyeri, Manoj Anmol and SG made it to more than 35 points on 50. Shortlisted poems comprised of those above 40 points, and here's the detailed break-up of scores for these:

    horus - 41
    C - 8
    E - 9
    R - 8.5
    I S - 7.5
    I R - 8

    Genie (old mem) -41
    C - 8
    E - 8
    R - 8.5
    I S - 8
    I R - 8.5

    NightHope (diet) - 41.5
    C - 8
    E - 9
    R - 8
    I S - 8
    I R - 8.5

    ZayraV -42
    C - 8.5
    E - 8
    R - 7.5
    I S - 8.5
    I R - 9.5

    NightHope (if) - 41.5
    C - 8
    E - 9
    R - 8
    I S - 8.5
    I R - 8

    Genie (natural de..) - 41.5
    C - 8
    E - 7.5
    R - 9.5
    I S - 8
    I R - 8.5

    Mina (ghalib...) - 39.5
    C - 9
    E - 7
    R - 7.5
    I S - 8
    I R - 8

    Margaret - 40.5
    C - 8
    E - 8
    R - 8
    I S - 8
    I R - 8.5

As you can see, Zayra is just a whisker ahead, and all the rest are almost there... I hope my difficulty and dilemma in judging these entries is visible from these scores. While there is no absolute comparison in poetry, my perceptions, like those of any other reader, were based upon the spur of the moment, held impressions and personal limitations. Zayra, for me, is a winner. Presently, I cannot decide clearly about the second and third awards. If I were to give a decision every hour of the day, the second and third prize would vary.. At present, following is the list:

    Gold: Zayra - 300 pts
Silver: Night Hope, for either of her poems (sorry I can't give you two trophies in same contest!) - 200 pts
    Bronze: Genielassie - 100 pts

Hon mention: Horus - 50 pts
Hon mention: Margaret - 50 pts
Hon mention: Mina - 50 pts

Please forgive me for comparison of poems. I respect the originality of your work and recognize that I may have erred while judging.

I am very thankful to all of you for the exceptional quality of entries in this contest. Special thanks to Vic ( http//allpoetry.com/eternalpoet ) for his constant support and encouragement during the contest.

    Thanks,
    Sau.

Ghalib "jaan" this is absolutely great.. I cannot write in proper form as you know, but i'd like to read 'em and give it a shot to understand them. ..Maybe I'll participate for the fun of it, and try my hand at translating something....

    Dear Kunji,

Thanks so much for your encouragement. I am glad you liked the idea, and will definitely welcome an entry from your side. Do not worry about form etc... I just want the reader to write something inspired by Ghalib, and you can write just as well as anyone. So all the very best,

    Hi grannyeri,

I just know you're from Canada... If you've not resd this poet called 'Ghalib' earlier, I assure you that it will be a treat to read any of his poems. Since we have different cultures, exploring diverse poetry sometimes throws fresh insights and emotions; from the little poetry that I have read, I have not come across a poet more intense than Ghalib. You might like reading some of his translated poems at oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan

I will wait for your entry,

    Mari dearest,

You are so so wonderful . Yes, I do not open many contests - this one had been on my mind since quite some time, but I had been convincing myself that I was busy enough not to start one. However, Ghalib is a poet that lovers cannot afford to miss, and I thought it'd be nice to do this through a contest at AP.

Thanks for your help in featuring; of course, I look forward to your entry. You may read some of his poems at oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan

    Regards and thanks,
