Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on December 30, 2005
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Thank you for entering the contest. If it inspired you or got you to read anything by Gibran, Ghalib or Neruda, I consider it successful, and hope that you enjoyed it.
The contest was judged on 5 categories - each of 10 marks each - namely content, expression, rhythm, selected poem, and finally, reflection of inspiration in the submitted poem. Based on this, poems were marked on a scale of 50 points. Sunrising, Abstract Dreamer, Fathom Me, Anasuya, Grannyeri, Manoj Anmol and SG made it to more than 35 points on 50. Shortlisted poems comprised of those above 40 points, and here's the detailed break-up of scores for these:
horus - 41
C - 8
E - 9
R - 8.5
I S - 7.5
I R - 8
Genie (old mem) -41

Margaret - 40.5

R - 8
I S - 8
I R - 8.5
As you can see, Zayra is just a whisker ahead, and all the rest are almost there... I hope my difficulty and dilemma in judging these entries is visible from these scores. While there is no absolute comparison in poetry, my perceptions, like those of any other reader, were based upon the spur of the moment, held impressions and personal limitations. Zayra, for me, is a winner. Presently, I cannot decide clearly about the second and third awards. If I were to give a decision every hour of the day, the second and third prize would vary.. At present, following is the list:
Gold: Zayra - 300 pts
Silver: Night Hope, for either of her poems (sorry I can't give you two trophies in same contest!) - 200 pts
Bronze: Genielassie - 100 pts
Hon mention: Horus - 50 pts
Hon mention: Margaret - 50 pts
Hon mention: Mina - 50 pts
Please forgive me for comparison of poems. I respect the originality of your work and recognize that I may have erred while judging.
I am very thankful to all of you for the exceptional quality of entries in this contest. Special thanks to Vic ( http//allpoetry.com/eternalpoet ) for his constant support and encouragement during the contest.
Thanks,
Sau.

Ghalib "jaan" this is absolutely great.. I cannot write in proper form as you know, but i'd like to read 'em and give it a shot to understand them. ..Maybe I'll participate for the fun of it, and try my hand at translating something....
Awesome idea, bestEST of luck, great job!!
-
Dear Kunji,
Thanks so much for your encouragement. I am glad you liked the idea, and will definitely welcome an entry from your side. Do not worry about form etc... I just want the reader to write something inspired by Ghalib, and you can write just as well as anyone. So all the very best,
Saurabh. -
.. you left me all of a sudden..
anyways.. brrbrr ... this seems to be difficult one for me to go on with.. i have never wrote gazal
.... but i see that i have enough time ( more than a month
) to write one and to edit it as much as i want...
by the way, i have seen few episode's of Mirza Ghalib-The Series in which Nasseruddin Shah acted as Ghalib... anyways.. good innovative contest...
...
Best of luck to everyone and anyone who enters
...
*hugs*
take cares and have anice time my dear friend...

I'd love to help with the judging. I am from Deli, have been to Nizamuddin many times, and a BIG fan of Ghalib. Specially his ghazal- Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi.
-
Great. Will keep you informed. We will start judging it towards the end of this month!
Thanks,
Saurabh -
You have given us a few options in how to write from Ghalib. I haven't read this poet, but I'll try to do so in the next few days. Maybe I'll find another form or even a ghazal. Thanks for posting this contest.
-
Always appreciate those who give us challenges to try out new poetic forms. Will try to get to this in the next few days. Thanks for hosting...
-
Hi Sau, you don't open many contests, but those you host are always very interesting. I'll certainly visit the links you show here, and try to write an enty to your contest.
Wishing you now lots of wonderful entries
-
you make me remember that incident where ghalib, caught drinking at a mosque tells the mosque authjorities,
'peene de sharab yaha baith ke
nahin to woh jagah batah jaha khuda na ho'
one request, sau. can i write a poem upon ghalib or even about some incidents in his weird life, say something about his love for wine and mangoes etc? -

Thanks for this link. I love it. Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari -
Thought Provoking
A very interesting contest, thank you for the links provided and I will see if there is something I can do. Even if I can't I'll have learned something new. Thank You. -
Hi grannyeri,
I just know you're from Canada... If you've not resd this poet called 'Ghalib' earlier, I assure you that it will be a treat to read any of his poems. Since we have different cultures, exploring diverse poetry sometimes throws fresh insights and emotions; from the little poetry that I have read, I have not come across a poet more intense than Ghalib. You might like reading some of his translated poems at oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan
I will wait for your entry,
Saurabh. -
Mari dearest,
You are so so wonderful
. Yes, I do not open many contests - this one had been on my mind since quite some time, but I had been convincing myself that I was busy enough not to start one. However, Ghalib is a poet that lovers cannot afford to miss, and I thought it'd be nice to do this through a contest at AP.
Thanks for your help in featuring; of course, I look forward to your entry. You may read some of his poems at oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan
Regards and thanks,
Saurabh. -
Hi,
Thanks so much for bringing that interesting incident to light. I shall mention it somewhere in the contest as well.
And you are most welcome to write poetry about his life, one or more of his experiences... whatever of Ghalib inspires you. Here's a link to his life, with some translated poems oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan
I will wait for your entry.
Thanks,
Saurabh. -
I'm in a love mood, I know I'll enjoy reading his poems. And you are very welcome

Hi,
Thanks for your comment. I am sure that only would you have something to learn from Ghalib's poems, reading him will be a thoroughly interesting and rewarding experience. Here's a link for you oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan

Hi
Thanks for your appreciation. Please take a look at the man's poetry, and I am sure you would find something that inspires an idea/concept for you. Of course, it'd be a pleasure to have you enter!
Saurabh. -
Best of luck with running this contest - it certainly sounds like it should generate some interesting entries (though, admittedly, it is not quite my cup of tea...)
-
I found this interesting. On the assumption that you speak the relevant language I should appreciate a translation of the following which I found....
"May tanga challa raha hoon. tum mere ghori hoo orr tumharay ball lagam ke tarha hain."
Thank you.

Good contest idea. I don't think my talents are up to task, but will enjoy others' efforts. Thank you for bringing to light a wonderful author of old. -
yea...i really dont grasp the concept
-
I found this even more interesting. On the assumption that you speak the relevant language I should appreciate a translation of the following which I found....
"May tanga challa raha hoon. tum mere ghori hoo orr tumharay ball lagam ke tarha hain."
Thank you in anticipation of your kind reply. -
The line means this -
I'm a chariot... you are my horse and your hair is like the reins which i hold on to...
However the lines seem dry in english, these are in hindi\urdu...and carry a lot more feeling in that language
Edited on Dec 19, 9:02 because ''. -
i have a question... is the poem to be written in english or will an original work in urdu\hindi do? in either case, an extension of the deadline by one day would be greatly appreciated. i just saw the contest and would love to be a part of it.
-
the contest will be extended as long as you want my friend, but kindly do think and enter this contest, you should write your work in English
... i will tell Sau to talk to you and postpone the ending date, i will wait for your entry
take cares and have a nice time
- vic -
may tanga chala raha hu - i am travelling/going on chariot
may = i
tanga = chariot
tum meri ghori ho - you are my horse
tum = you
ghori = horse ( female horse, i dont know if they have any specific name
)
aur tumhare baal lagaam ki tarah hai - and your hairs are like reins
aur = and
baal = hair
lagaam = reins
got it sweet lady?
...i hope so, thanks for taking interest in this contest
.. so very nice of you

am surprised u found it tough... all u need to enter is to write a poem, on any idea inspired by ghalib, which means u've got to read one of ghalib's writes for it. that's all. in fact, reading ghalib could be more wonderful than u might expect. try this link oldpoetry.com/Authors/Ghalib%20Mirza%20Asadullah%20Khan

Ho! fucking ho!
seriously though, my local Indian does a really good Chicken Ghalib. Last time I had it I was on the run for a week.
No seriously, it's Christmas for Christ's sake and I need to sober up a bit to tolerate dinner with my brother-in-law, the well-known abortionist. -
I've been looking for some new/old poets to draw inspiration from. This may have come just at the right time. I'll see what I can come up with. Great idea for a contest. Good luck judging.

Its a grrrrrreat contest. I read a few entries.. and all sound so interestingly good! I'm glad you did this
I'm happy for one more reason.. your contest was so interesting, I forced myself to learn something new & at least took a step in writing differently. Mine is more like a joke next to the ones I've read, but I'm glad I pushed myself to start learning something. ..wouldnt have been possible without you. Thanks for being encouraging
Best of luck

You are most welcome. the purpose of the contest was to inspire something new in people, and I'm glad you got to learn during the process. I'd read your poem soon and give my feedback.
