Dreamcatcher - Child Abuse Awareness Contest

"The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." - Albert Einstein

Hello, privileged to meet you. After all, it is not every day one meets someone who is capable of changing the world...

It is a sad fact that the most abused, neglected and unrepresented part of our society is our children. The most important thing a child needs is not an education, but love and affection, to know that someone cares. So let us raise our voices against all forms of child abuse and cruelty. If we don't stand up for them, then who are we to think we're better than those abusing them?

This contest is primarily held to break the ice over the issue (child abuse - physical, emotional or sexual), and to spread awareness, so we have no specific topics or guide lines, except a few rules. All we are looking for is your opinion about the issue. Express it however you want, as a poem, a prayer, your experience, or generally how much the thing disgusts you... all options are open, and style is your own choice!

• It will be nice if you can refrain from excessive swearing, unless it is absolutely necessary, and present in a moderate level.

• You do not have to read, comment, or applause any other entries in the contest, but it is considered a nice gesture, and it will help you see the problem from another persons view...

• Please avoid using all CAPITAL LETTERS, Sticky Caps, aLTeRNaTiNG CaSeS, "g33k t41k", and internet slang, and please use spellcheck.

• Maximum three entries per person, and prewrites are allowed.

That's about it. Remember that every single voice counts. Oh yeah, if this is not interesting enough, you get

1500 points and Gold trophy for first place,
500 points and Silver trophy for second place,
300 points and Bronze trophy for third place, and
four Honorable Mentions worth 50 points each.

That is 2500 points in total!

All poems will receive atleast one applause for each of us. So what are you waiting for? Go out there, and get inspired!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 4, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 1500
  • Final notes:
We never expected to get such a response on this contest! Maybe it was the subject, maybe it was the points. Either way, the poems flooded in, and we had to put a limit on 150 poems, if we were to manage to read, comment, and applaud all entries before the time was out. Then we had to find the best, and that took time aswell! There is seven winners on this list, but ALL who entered this contest are winners. We appreciate the courage of all those who have been abused and have so boldly stood up to speak up about it, though it must have been very painfiul. Thank you to everyone else for taking the time off to raise your voice about the issue, and off course another big thank you to all our sponsors

wow! I definitely support this. ( surprised? ) the statistics comming in about the issue are pretty scary and so are the horror stories when people actually start talking about it. afterall, awareness and acceptance are te steps to handle a menace of such magnitude.

    wonderful Idea

This is a great contest. I have to enter. Although my poem is not about me, it is about my daughter and the abuse that made us both victims, and survivors. Thank you so much for putting a contest l;ike this out there. Maybe now we'll all actually be heard. - Harper

A really good contest for a good cause. You would be surprised how many kids are sexually abused each and every day by adults. And many are never found out about, cause no one tells. The child lives with it the rest of their lives though. It just something that never goes away, it's always in the back of your mind.

    Very good contest idea.

    Excellent

A noble effort and one I'm very much in support of I will bookmark your contest and see what I can do to write a suitable poem. I have a friend and coworker who was abused as a child, she once said she could spot an victim within 10 seconds of conversation. I asked her how could she possibly tell? She answered it was by the way they held their arms either closely to their sides or crossed over their chests, the hunched shoulders, the way they never quite looked you in the eye, the monotone voice, the way they flinched when touched by another person, the way they kept quiet and faded into the woodwork, the agonizing lack of self esteem. I don't know if you believe it, but listening to her, I certainly did She gives lectures on child abuse and how to recognize it at local churchs and non-profit organizations. She refuses to accept any money or gas reimbursement, etc. for these informative seminars. She has had children come up to her and talk for a moment before shying away. It makes me want to cry. I'm rambling, I know, LOL. Excellent idea for another contest, best wishes.

I'm inclined to believe that you are like me, "Anishnawbe." The dreamcatcher name, and the child abuse give me that indication.

I'm deciding whether or not I should enter this contest. I'have never won anything, but this topic is of great interest to me. Those three abuses that you had mentioned, have all occured to me. But add psychological and spiritual aswell.

I've have come along way, recorrecting the damage that was inflicted upon me, and I've done a great job I think. I have forgiven the people that have done me harm, and have moved on. The dreams still haunt me, and I still feel that all consuming fear most times. I have had to learn how to deal with abandonment and trust issues.

I'll think about writing something, but in the mean time stay well. I'll try and findsome time to read what you have written.

Thank you for hosting this contest!

Excellent contest idea! After having 'rescued' a young girl on this site from her home and since having found two more and assisted in removing them from their homes, I am finding that child abuse is SO common in this country, it is UNREAL! My own family has been affect by serious child neglect. My own two daughters walked out on their children because of Meth abuse. It is known that nearly 50% of child abuse and neglect is because of the Meth and Alcohol abuse in this Country. Those two things cause the best of parents to become the worst!

My contribution is on its way. Excellent contest idea on such a crucial topic.

Many blessings and s to you!

This is an excellent subject for a contest and syndication. I've known of so much child abuse, some of it within my own extended family, it's mind boggling. Children, our most treasured resource, our future, our most cherished ones...yet the abuse goes on and on.

My poem which I've entered into the contest is a true story, which happened just down the street from where I used to live. It's sad, brings tears whenever I think of it..and this is just one example of child abuse, what love can do, and the courts taking what to me is often an irresponsible approach....it's heartbereaking.
My applause to you for running this contest and hopefully making more people aware of the need for action to protect our children.
Please accept some points from me to use for the contest, I'd give more but I'm running short at the moment... maybe I can do more later

Poets in the US please join The National Association to Protect Children protect.org. Protect is a national lobby for the protection of children, intent on exposing and changing laws that leave children vulnerable. Children can't vote so politicians do not bother with laws to protect them. Laws will only change when adults make the politicians aware that we will not stand by and let them ignore the plight of the innocent any longer.

I hope this contest gets a lot of attention to it. Not enough people realize that what happens in childhood for those of us who get abused in any way, sticks with us for life. Most that get/got abused are so insecure with themselves, inside and out. And, not surprisingly, most of the people I know get abused,or got abused. I seriously wish this contest the best of luck, and all who have entered. Hopefully, this will reach out to people and help them to understand that abuse is something that should get more attention to it, and should be dealt with in suitable ways.

I must applaud this badly needed community effort to bring awareness about what I consider one of the worst atrocities in this world Having been a victim myself , I will first submit a prewrite that is a very personal one ...it sort of is a childs way of dealing with it. Subsequently as I grew up I worked with antisocial teens ( most have suffered some form of abuse, and the consequences worked themselves out in horrible ways) I will also try to submit a new write addressing the issue , as it is so close to my heart. Thank you to everyone who put their effort into bringing this to light,

I am sorry to see that this contest has closed.I had wanted to refresh people's memory about a terrible case of abuse that happened here in thr USA in 1987. I was still living in Europe at the time , but the case made International headlines.
A prominent attorney named Joel Steinberg beat his illegally adopted six year old daughter Lisa to death. His live in companion Hedda Nussbaum ( a childrens book author was also horribly abused by him and brainwashed by this sinister man) However I personally also put some blame on her for not doing anything and idly standing by and watching lisa suffer some horrible things. She was chained up many times , food was denied to her . She slept on the floor many times in her own urine and feces Hedda Nussbaum was granted immunity for testifying against Joel Steinberg. Up to this day she still considers herself a victim and has never even taken partial responsibility for not acting on little Lisa's behalf (it is a mothers duty) no matter how scared she is of her partner to protect her child at all cost)She was obviously a very intelligent woman and should have found a way. The day that Lisa died , Joel had beat her so badly....he then left the house. Hedda refused to seek medical treatment , and a few hours later this little child was dead .Maybe in an angelic intervention her death was also her final peace and release from all that she went through. Up to this day I see her little face as it was shown on the television news...it will forever haunt me. Joel Steinberg was released on June 30th of 2004 . He was only sentenced to 25 years in prison and was released much earlier. It is my opinion that he deserved the death penalty ( but not before having been made to suffer the same exact way as that little girl did. Let's always remember that there are thousands of little Lisa's out there and that there are people like Joel Steinberg that do not deserve to be called Humans or even animals-----for most animals only kill out of the need for food for survival. Damned be this society that does so little for the innocent victims
    R.I P little Lisa,

I was not around when this contest started, or ended for that matter, and I do not have many points at the moment, but here are a few in the form of applause as my little contribution to your very important and sad topic. I will be reading the entries, though I can already tell that it will be quite the emotional experience. I have been exposed to a few children in my life who were abused, and there is nothing that can send me to jail faster than to get my hands on some of these people. Coming from Florida, we seem to make headlines on a pretty regular basis, and it is sickening. I am so glad that it looks like the response to your contest was overwhelming.

My heart is aching even worse than my head!!!

I, like Reenie, wanted to do a follow up write for this contest, for all the victims that were made to suffer abuse and become a statistic in our sad society. My heart is breaking into a million little pieces as I read these works and my head is aching from the tension that has built up inside it due to the sufferings that I have read about here and not only hear about from others, but also know first hand.
We as survivors must go forth and do whatever it takes to make this heard. I am going to contact my local newspaper and I pray that if they are willing to print the works, nobody will have a problem with that. To Starhiker, my AP brother and friend also to Adorable Yeti, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for holding this contest. It is a form of enlightenment and I hope others will think along the same lines I am thinking. I also feel a second contest is in order for new writes only. It seems we had a lot of each here. I wish I applauded this before it closed. You know where I stand on this issue Jim. Let's do what we can to help the children now before they become a statistic. I have to stop for a while now and get my wits about me. Love and blessings for all, today and always. Joyce

    Dearest Soul

I just posted the following comment on a line of Titus:

    'Dearest Poet

Sometimes the truth hurts. Not your truth or my truth, but THE truth. Now, the world seems to find it difficult to distinguish between these three truths. And so many wrongs are done by avoiding the thruth. The hurt caused by the so called Law, demonstrates this statement. "Sorry" cannot bring back a mother who shot herself because she and her child was sexually abused and the burden became to big to carry. And if the Juridical System does not understand TRUTH and hurts many lives in the process, saying "sorry" afterwards is always too late and inadequate.

Now, Poet, there is ONE case in which the truth cannot hurt, even if it is a mirror: that is the truth told in divine love ... for the benefit of the addressed soul.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say my heart on a very thought-provoking statement.'

If there is anyone wanting to speak to me on Child Abuse, to ventilate, please contact me at myrataal@mweb.co.za

Thank you for hosting this awareness project.

    Love

    Myra

I see only more common forms of abuse have been written about, which is in some way comforting... Female genital mutilation for example is a horrific form of abuse performed between the ages of 7-10 in some african/asian communities. I can only imagine the physical and psychological effects that must have on an individual.

Congratulations on a purposeful and well constructed contest.

Oh gosh!!! What a tragic happening! I didn't know about this case but all I can say is that the man deserved more than just 25 years. It's very injust that he was released so early. That's why I'm still in favor of death penalty...heartless people like that Joel deserve death....and a cruel one at that!
Thanks a lot for sharing this, Reenie.
By the way, have a nice time judging it, Jim. I can see that you've received many great entries and hope that each one of them helps to become an abused child's voice.

Thank you for your comment - abuse is abuse is abuse hunny and in a way i am glad no one has written about female genital mutilation [as far as I know yet still reading over 120+ entries which why it closed!] I do know about this barbaric form of abuse and I am as appalled at it as I am about all kinds of abuse on children and young people. There are many other forms of ongoing abuse in our world including domestic violence - and statistically many women who are abused as children choose abusive adult relationships - not all - but some do, it is all they have known which is so sad.

Sadly the world is not a nice place to be sometimes for too many people - our raising awareness is a start - i wish i had a bandaid big enough to heal every single person being hurt - I don't

I know abuse is abuse, my point merely was there are still multiple forms of abuse that have not been considered or mentioned by poets. I could go on forever about the forms of abuse I have come across studying child protection as part of my degree. I was merely pointing out many forms of abuse have not been considered and surely if raising awareness is your key aim then fact that some forms haven't been mentioned is a down point?

So many of us have been abused, you will have a lot of work in front of you to judge this. I'll submit something and donate points to the conyest. Thank you for caring and allowing prewrites (that was smart...some people might feel like they are reliving it to ho back there).

WOW, you've had such a wonderful response to this contest and I feel honoured to be among the winners. Thank you very much! Congratulations to the other winners and the HM's. And thank you for drawing attention to this very relevant and important issue...children are very close to my heart. They should be allowed to be children and to be whole. Many blessing!

    Enlightening Contest!!!!!

Jim and Yeti, Thank you both for hosting such an eyeopening contest. misselaineous, thank you also for helping with the judging. I tried to help my AP brother Starhiker and it was just hitting me so hard. I was in tears with every read and I would not have been able to pick 7 because every single one I got through effected me just as much as the one before. This is a subject which really hits home. I haven't heard from my local newspaper and I will send them a follow up email. If they choose not to cover this I am going to the Boston papers with it as well. We need to take a stand and be heard here as well as felt. My heartfelt congratulations to the winners, honorable mentions and every single entry that was in here.
Thank you all for sharing. Kudos to all. Love and blessings for all, today and always. Joyce

    Wonderful contest!

Thank you so much for the HM. And congratulations to the winners! This was an incredible contest on a MOST important topic! Wonderful entries all. And my Little Yeti, I am brainstorming on that idea you have for a support group. I think it is a WONDERFUL idea! My brain is just not thinking too clearly today. I lost a friend and I am feeling just a bit responsible in a round about sort of way (long story; many regrets). I will get back to you shortly on that.

Many blessings and s to all!

You want to donate money? Yes, please! Nah, points are the only valid currency here on AP, so money won't do. Btw, your geek talk was bugged. You tried to say Aw damn, I love geek talk! Just kidding..., but the m in damn is 13, not 12.

Congratulations to all the winners...this was a well worthy contest and definitely not one where it is about winning or loosing. A big thank you to the hosts for getting this topic to be addressed on here....and hopefully we can all somehow make a difference by being more aware,

Hi, Sylvyrwyng. With 150 entries, and with this subject, I forgive you for not being able to comment on all. Not even I commented on all the poems. I had help from adorable yeti and misselaineous. Thanks for trying, though! Jim

Absolutly the best contest I have ever seen

I myself was abused, (physically, sexually, and emotionally) so I understand what this is about. I am so glad to see someone actually putting thier voice out there to let people know. I must thank you for placing this contest on this site, there are so many people who need to know the severity of the situations, and how to help them. Thank you... Thank you so much... I hope you'll take the time to read one of my poems called "Abuse Is" or "You Never Knew" Both of them not only talk anout what I've been through, but what many kids go through. If you do, please let me know what you think.

Hi, TonysGirl! Thanks for the interest in the Dreamcather contest, but unfortunately it has ended several days ago. I will look at your poems later, if that's ok. I do not have much time right now... Jim
