Sonnets and Villanelles [Contest]

I'm extending the close date by 1 week because I have not received as many entries as I would like. However I wont do another extension after that.

I've decided that I dont get to read enough sonnets and villanelles on AP, and I dont get enough feedback from sonnet/villanelle writers on my own.  I thought it would be nice to read some new ones and hopefully discover some new poets who write them. So here we go, my 3rd contest.

If you don't know what a sonnet is I suggest doing a google search on the phrase : what is a sonnet

you can try a google search for : what is a villanelle if you don't know what that is as well.

You may enter a maximum of 1 sonnet of any specific type (as well as a maximum of 1 non-standard sonnet) and 1 villanelle.
(i.e. you can enter 1 english sonnet and 1 petrarchan sonnet, but not 2 english sonnets)

I will comment on every entry.

For every poem you enter (max 1 each type) you must comment on one of my sonnets (if you enter a sonnet) or one of my villanelles (if you enter a villanelle) as well as 1 other poem entered in the contest.

I have a list of sonnets and a list of villanelles to make finding mine easier.

sonnet list: allpoetry.com/list/19649
villanelle list: allpoetry.com/list/24081

The prizes:
1st place 300 pts
2nd place 100 pts
3rd place 50 pts.

arbitrary number of Honourable mentions each get an applaud.

If I am conflicted about who should win I will decide ties by looking at which poet made the most intelligent and useful comments in their review of another entrant or my own poetry.

If you do not comply with the rules (especially #3) your entry will be DELISTED WITHOUT WARNING!

Rules
1. comment/review one of my sonnets or villanelles for each poem you enter.
2. comment/review one of the other entries entered in the contest for each poem you enter.
3. put the name of the 2 other poems you commented on in your author notes so I know what they are. (remember each poem you enter requires you to review 2 seperate other poems)
4) You may enter a maximum of 1 of each type of sonnet and 1 Villanelle.
5) You may not enter a poem which has already won Gold in a previous contest of mine.

To help prevent comment leeching please consider putting a comment on poems which have ALREADY fulfilled their own comment obligations.  Some people enter contests like this just to get free comments.

I hope everyone learns something about form poetry.

Cheers!

David

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 16, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone recieved an applaud well done.

I would like to also mention
"Now Comes the Warrior [Italian Sonnet] by -Doctor-Who-"

    it is was very close.

It is unfortunate that all the winners were sonnets. Some of the villanelles were good, but none of them really seemed as good as the best sonnets in this contest.

Cheers to all! And please check out my Nature Poetry contest I have opened.

I'd have entered this, but I bitterly resent being told I have to comment on the contest giver's poems to enter. However, it's a good idea for a contest. Good luck with it.

ecrivain: the rule is there to compell entrants to expose themselves to sonnets and villanelles written by others and get feedback on their own. To get some feedback on my own poems and to justify my commenting on the entries. The rule is fair because on average everyone will get 2 reviews. with early entries getting more than 2 reviews. but overall everyone gets 2 reviews.

the reviews you get from this contest are likely to be slightly higher quality because instead of some random poet who doesn't know what a sonnet or villanelle is (what happens just as likely as not if you feature a poem), you get someone who at least has a clue.

    Dear DavidZ,
If you are searching for sonnets to read may I, with respect, suggest that if you go to my Author's Page and click on the "Wyleian Sonnets Chapbook" allpoetry.com/list/9954 or "Sonnets and Sonnaiku" in my lists you will find well over 100 sonnets written by some of the best sonneteers on the AP site as well as many of my own. You will find examples of all conceivable sonnet forms as well as some experimental essays. For consistently exemplary models of sonnet form I would also recommend you to read those of MargaretG and Mary6 in particular.
    Sincerely, Hugh Wyles.
