11-29-05 UPDATE!!!!
Due to this contest's lack of entries, I am closing it as is. I guess members just want to enter into easy contests and not have a challenge. Shame on you!
Maybe my rules were a bit over the top, but they are nothing compared to some rules I have seen in the past.
My next contest will be..........uhhhhh........how should I put it? Easier.
This contest will close 10 hours from now (12:00 PM California Time) at 10:00 PM.
I will not be having a second or third contest following this one, because there aren't enough entries to do this. Duh!
First off, this contest is for members of AllPoetry that have NO TROPHIES. If you have a trophy, you will be removed, period. I will not be nice and ask you to remove it, I will simply remove it. If you win a trophy before the contest closes or is judged, you will need to remove your entry from the contest to assure everyone the same chance to win their first trophy. I will check, so if you fail to do this, guess what? I will remove it.
A little insight as to why I like having these contests: My very first trophy was won in a contest like this. Also, I think that so many good writers are overlooked by biased contest hosts because they’d rather give a trophy to their relative or best friend, than give it to someone who truly deserved it.
As you may have guessed from the title of the contest, this is a three part contest. All members that enter into this contest that do not win a trophy will have two more chances to win a trophy. Those contests will only be open to the members that enter into this contest that do not win. No other members will be allowed. So, if you do not win, don’t worry. You will have two more chances.
Criteria of the contest:
Write a four stanza poem using the Quatrain form. Here are the rhyme schemes (pick only one) to follow:
1. abab
2. abba
3. aabb
4. aaba, bbcb, ccdc, dddd -- Chain Rhyme Quatrain
If you do not understand what those “abab” letters mean, ask. I will do my best to explain it to you. AllPoetry is a learning environment too.
The poem can be on almost any subject you wish. I prefer not to read dark writes or anything depressing, but if you can impress me with one, more power to you. But, I have only read a few that have, so your chances are slim. If you are going to write something that is not intended for the younger generation to be able to read, make sure you put it in the correct category.
Rules:
1. You CANNOT have won a trophy before or during this contest, period. If you have won one, remove your entry. If you fail to do this, I will be more than happy to do it for you.
2. No StIcKy CaPs or chat-speak jargon. In my opinion, it’s annoying and has no place in poetry. If it shows up, there will be no warning. I will remove the entry, period.
3. If you are going to use foul language, be unique in doing so. Using curse words to shock or make a point is boring. I can cut someone down and never once use a colorful metaphor to do it.
4. No pre-writes. Since this is a contest with a specific required form of poetry, I feel that a new and fresh entry should be painless.
5. One entry per person. I want to give as many members a chance for their first trophy.
6. You must be a member of AllPoetry prior to July 1st of 2005. I will check, and if you break this rule, I will remove your entry, period. The reason for this time frame is because I often get members that just joined AllPoetry into these contests, and have not yet “earned” the right to be awarded a trophy in these particular contests that I host. It is for members that have been passed over unjustly in other contests on numerous occasions. I am trying to be fair to the ones that deserve a first break. If you don’t feel this is fair, feel free to host your own contest and make your rules to your liking.
7. Read at least one of the entries in this contest and comment on it. You are not required to put which one you read in your author’s comments / notes section, but it might just earn you brownie points if you do. If you are the first entry, come back later to read and comment. If you choose to put who and what you read in your notes section and need assistance in doing this, let me know. I can walk you through it.
8. You must follow the criteria of the contest with the form of poetry that is required, period. If you submit something that does not fit any of the rhyme schemes listed for the Quatrain form above, your entry will be removed, period.
9. In your author’s notes / comments section (below where you typed in your poem), put what rhyme scheme you used. For example:
“I used rhyme scheme number 2 - abba”
That’s how I would like to see it.
10. Have fun. Yep, that is a rule.
Trophies and points:
1st place –
Gold trophy and 300 points
2nd place –
Silver trophy and 100 points
3rd place –
Bronze trophy and 50 points
I will comment on every entry. I can kind of be brutal with my comments if the need arises. I’m not a jerk about it, but I do tell it like it is. If you do not think you can handle this, please move on to another contest where the hosts are like robots and just write the same comment over and over without it being apparent that they have even read the piece.
Please make sure you meet the criteria and adhere to the rules of this contest. I really want to hand out trophies to deserving poets who need their first break and it would be a shame to be forced to disqualify someone just because they don’t.
This contest will close after the first 25 entries.
OK, what are you waiting for? Get penning!

I KNOW for a fact that I can't enter but can I help with your contest instead?
Moreover, this idea for a contest is just superb genius and i got a few quatrain writes if you want to use them as examples

I would indeed be honored if you could help with this. I know I could count on you to be unbiased.
-

This is a very noble thing you do sire! I applaud your efforts here. A solid contest with a solid goal.
Good luck to the two of you judging this!

Very cool contest, John. I hope you aren't hated too much for your rules! Good luck with the judging... But I do hope it won't take you away from your true calling.
-
Great!
An excellent contest, providing a wonderful opportuniy to new and upcoming poets who deserve a little nudge of encouragement
But, as is outlined in (I think) your first sentence
I'm not eligible to enter
Best wishes with this though, and the best of luck to the participants!

Nice to see such a contest giving opportunities to the yet to be discovered poets. Best Wishes and Good Luck to All

stephcheergirl, rules are rules. Sorry. If I allowed you to get in, then there would be anarchy in the streets. Chickens would dance around with pigs and forks would want to be used for soup. It just wouldn’t be safe anymore.
But seriously, I cannot allow one person, because then I would have to break the rules for everyone. I have a lot of these contests, so maybe after these three are over, I’ll have one for you to be able to enter into. Keep an eye open for it.

John,
I love that there are some here that do this regularly for those who have never been awarded trophies, due mostly to bias because a friend or family member was entered. There are a lot o here who are doing it right and run good contests, but it takes a while to find them. But NOT YOU...you make sure you lay your cards on the table from the start. Great thing you are doing for the not too lucky in the draw, or not on a fav. list, or have family that'll let 'em win. YOU GO JOHN!!!
And, if you need any help, in any capacity with the contest, let me know, I'd be honored too contribute. ♥

Somebody's gotta do it.
So, I might as well be the meanie I am.
I'll keep you in mind. If I need a tiebreaker or something. Or maybe you can be my Vanna White and hand out the trophies?
-
To stephcheergirl,
Like John said...rules are rules and if there weren't any rules to begin with then the whole world would not be worth anything thereof whereas when it comest to poetry's rules for contest they have to be followed whether they're liked or not
...plain and simple

Sooooo... I have like over 70 trophies, about 7 coloured once and even a trophy rainbow... guess I can't enter with that
lol
Good luck to everyone who can though
-
I'll be having word with you!
-
yes??
-
David, I thought you were going to have a word with me?? Or were you talking to someone else?
-
I was going to enter, but I joined in October, too bad
-
Nice contest...I would enter, but I only joined here less than a week ago ^_^U Anyway, good luck to the people who entered!
