Chilli's Double Poems - Contest

This contest is for Double Poems. The first one of these I saw was 'Up There' by Chilliwoman. The only rule is that every other line is a single word which makes a sentence (the 'inner poem') by itself. It doesn't matter whether it is the even or odd lines that make up the inner poem. The other lines can be any length and can rhyme or not as you please.

As a (bad) specimen of what we are looking for, consider the following:

You want to
WRITE
a double poem
A
way to interlace
DOUBLE
meanings into one
POEM,
carefully weaving,
INTERLEAVING
two separate
MEANINGS.

The whole thing is the outer poem. The inner poem is in caps:
WRITE A DOUBLE POEM, INTERLEAVING MEANINGS

(Please don't use caps for the competition)

In judging we will value poems with a good linkage between the outer and the inner poems and we will be looking for humour, sentiment (rather than sentimentality) and plain good poetry. If you look at our own work, you'll see what we think of as good. If you have a poem like this as a pre-write you can, of course, enter it.

Good luck!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on November 15, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
We had great difficulty judging this one because we had so many excellent entries. We really liked some of those we couldn't give awards to. We would like to mention Wildflowers etc., Stars, a Bunch of Lunch etc and, specially, A Beautiful night. Do take a look at them. In general, the standard was wonderfully high. And, as a positive response to I-Like-Rhymes, the winners were all strictly within the rules.

    All the best ad thanks

    vic & debs

The best thing to do is to take a look at an example. Chilliwoman has one on 'Up Here'. allpoetry.com/Poem/1611312 She has some discussion there in the comments on the form itself, but it is not, to the best of my knowledge, one of the standards.

Very interesting. Suprisingly, I think I understand this. Which scares the junk out of me. . . . . . I wish you the best best of luck with this, and if I have a sudden hit of inspiration, I will so definately enter. Great contest !! Good luck to all the contestants!

I'm all about form lately, but I seriously don't think I have it in me to create something like that. lol. Just strikes me as taking entirely too much thought, and I've been highly medicated lately! LOL. Love the idea, and I'll have fun reading the entries you get.

Thanks for your comment I-L-R! We both liked your entry lots - no point in a contest without rules........Hope you will read some works by Philogos - he's very good indeed. But he adheres passionately to the rules!! x chilli
