Delicate Sound of Thunder

Pink Floyd fan or not, upon listening to their lyrics, you often find yourself shocked into social awareness.  The band has a way of twisting a thought on a teetering balance between terror and exquisite beauty and they rarely leave us without something to think about.

You will find 3 sets of their lyrics following all the rules and other malarkey we contest holders value so.  These will be the inspiration for your topic.  I don't expect you to listen to them, as this is a word writing contest and if you hate that kind of music, I don't want to torture you .  Just read the words, and pick the one that tickles your fancy then write whatever your little heart desires in keeping with your inspiration.

I am not going to give one of those big speeches about the difference between crap and poetry.  I think that is purely a matter of opinion anyway.  All I will say, is dare to be different.  If you think you have heard it before, try to twist it into something different.

The rules

1.  Keep cutting, bleeding, and other various assorted stains to my carpet to a minimum.  I don't want to clean up after you

2.  If you feel the NeEd tO sTiCkY, please keep my vision in mind.  Heh!  I am old enough to be a Pink Floyd fan, how good can my eyes possibly be

3.  If you use a particular poetic form, mention it in your author's notes so I can appreciate it as such.

4.  I am not offended by language, but keep in mind, if we have young viewers they will only see a bunch of bunnys which is quite detrimental to the shock value of swearing every other word.  The rest of us might just get bored.

5.  If you so desire, comment on others entries.  If you comment on mine, brutal honesty is accepted, but try to be both kind and helpful to your fellow contestants.

6.  Write ONE MAN'S CRAP IS ANOTHER MAN'S POETRY in your author's notes.  No real reason for this.  I just always wanted to say it

7.  Keep readability in mind when you pick your background and type color, etc.  Light type on black backgrounds, dark on light backgrounds, etc.

8.  Only 1 entry per person.  Just in case I get more than 2 and a half entries, I want to make sure I give each one ample consideration.

9.  DO NOT put any of the Pink Floyd lyrics into your piece.  Make sure your piece is completely original from the title to the last line.  They have not given us permission to use any portion of their work in any of our own writings.

10. Include simply your chosen option number in your author's notes, just to ensure I get it

Okay.  Now what you can expect from me.  I will comment on each entry.  I will applaud each entry just because you entered.  I will award trophies based on my opinion of the piece.  When it comes to poetry, everyone has an opinion and that is really all we honestly have to work with.  Just write something you are happy with, and let it go.  No matter my opinion, you still end up with a piece of creativity you can find satisfaction with.

The spoils of ringing my chimes are as follows

1.  Gold cyber tin and 300 points
2.  Silver cyber tin and 200 points
3.  Bronze cyber tin and 100 points

That's it for the blahblahblah.  Here are the options.

*Option 1*

The Dogs of War

Dogs of war and men of hate
With no cause, we don't discriminate
Discovery is to be disowned
Our currency is flesh and bone
Hell opened up and put on sale
Gather 'round and haggle
For hard cash, we will lie and deceive
Even our masters don't know the web we weave

One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... one world

Invisible transfers, long distance calls,
Hollow laughter in marble halls
Steps have been taken, a silent uproar
Has unleashed the dogs of war
You can't stop what has begun
Signed, sealed, they deliver oblivion
We all have a dark side, to say the least
And dealing in death is the nature of the beast

One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... one world

The dogs of war don't negotiate
The dogs of war won't capitulate,
They will take and you will give,
And you must die so that they may live
You can knock at any door,
But wherever you go, you know they've been there before
Well winners can lose and things can get strained
But whatever you change, you know the dogs remain.

One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... one world

*Option 2*

Learning to Fly

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can i escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, i

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, i thought i thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone

A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, i

Friction lock - set.
Mixture - rich
Propellers - fully forward
Flaps - set - 10 degrees
Engine gauges and suction - check

Mixture set to maximum percent - recheck
Flight instruments...
Altimeters - check both
--garbled word - on
Navigation lights - on
Strobes - on
--to tower: confirm 3-8-echo ready for departure
--tower: hello again, this is now 129.4
--to tower: 129.4. it's to go.
--tower: you may commence your takeoff, winds over 10 knots.
--to tower: 3-8-echo
Easy on the brakes. take it easy. its gonna roll this time.
Just hand the power gradually, and it...

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds i see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, i

*Option 3*

One the Turning Away

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"

It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud

On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on November 2, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Wow, Wow, and more Wow. You guys definately made this contest very difficult to judge. I truly wish I could award each and everyone of you with a gold. You all approached your topics from your own point of view and you all spoke volumes with your words. If you did NOT win a trophy, please know that it is definately NOT because your work was not trophy worthy.

I would like to thank everyone for putting the silly little line I specified in your author's notes. While I would never DQ anyone over such silliness, it made checking the entries more fun and gave me a chuckle every time I read it. And I hope it reminded all of you of each poets individual uniqueness and comes to mind when you are viewing others work that does not necessarily suit your taste

I adore pink floyd, we played Echoes at a gig we did recently, how I wish you'd given us that option...
I think I'll enter anyway, not often I see a contest that tickles me as much as this

Ooo, I hope you do enter. I basically picked the songs that I did to give some variation in topics. I didn't want people to feel like they were limited in their topics, but I wanted to give a bit of direction. I will be interested to see what you come up with. Whatever any of the 3 sets of lyrics inspires you to write about is good. I leave the interpretation of the lyrics entirely up to the author

Another contest - thanks for hosting. They were a bit beyond my teen years, not into their music. Good for some though.

You dont have to like the music, just check out the words and if any of the lyrics inspire anything creative--then enter . I don't expect replicas of Pink Floyd or even song lyrics. I just want to see what the lyrics can inspire Any form, rhyme or no, ad nauseum. Glad you stopped by though, whether you enter or not.

This actually looks like an interesting contest. I like some of Pink Floyd's stuff. Their lyrics are pretty deep. I'll try to think of something to enter!

I hope you do, even if these are not songs you are familiar with. In fact I am hoping that I get an entry or 2 from people who have nothing to go on but the words as well. Hope to see an entry from you

Hello my friend. I didn’t realize this was a contest or I would have gone to your page and not wasted you points by clicking on it. Sorry buddy. I’m have to bend my mid around this one. To change their wording is almost sacrilege. image and Visions

Well, loosely defined, the first option deals with political leaders, war, what our leaders sell us that humanity pays a terrible price for. The second is pretty wide in it's range of interpretation from drug experiences, to not fitting the mold, to actually learning to fly or becoming free, and the 3rd is a social statement about turning our backs on the ills in the world. All of the lyrics are pretty broad in terms of what people take from them, so I would imagine you could work it into one of the categories, especially if you are working from an album cover . Just get creative and give it a whirl, you can always rewrite a bit later to make it fit your album cover inspiration better . I am not going to turn down any entries. I figure it is your inspiration, so it is your choice how you want to approach it. You can even be deviously inventive if you want

Lol, never a waste of points. It was the first time I promoted a contest so I didnt know I needed to add the word contest to the title to get it to show as such. Of course, I certainly don't expect anyone to twist any of their words . Just draw inspiration from them. Whatever there is about the message in any of the options that strikes a chord with you, write about it. I am not going to judge any of the pieces on whether or not I feel they walked away from the lyrics with the right message. There really is no --right-- message. Just whatever the lyrics speak to you. Lol, I would even accept an --I think Pink Floyd stinks-- poem and judge it entirely on the poem itself and the creativity it reflects. I will even accept entries from the folks that are saying --who the heck is this Floyd guy?-- If one of the pieces speaks to you, just write what ya feel
