Okay, here's the story: I've been on Allpoetry for almost a year, and after awhile I've stopped posting new writing. Not because I no longer wish to write, but because I don't NEED to as much as I used to, and quite frankly, most if not all of my poems were pretty immature. I've loved it one AP, and this is my farewell contest. Anyone can enter.
So what it comes down to is I think I'll be leaving AP in December. I've been on AP since December 17th of last year, so trophies will be awarded that day...and I'm giving at least 1000 points for first place. The remaining points will go to 2nd and 3rd if I decide on that.
That means I'm going to be very critical when it comes to judging the entries, and it's not going to be easy. However, I encourage all those interested to enter, and I hope you do.
SUBJECTS:
--read Max Ehrmann's poem "Desiderata"...you can find it here: www.expage.com/vurockdudesiderata
--after you've read this, write a poem based on one of these subjects:
1...don't live life to fast
2...accepting everyone
3...being honest
4...being happy with what you have
5...a person in your life that is truly amazing and makes all the difference in the world
6...loving someone honestly and wholly
7...moving on after a heartbreak
8...the lessons you learn as you grow older
9...being prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best
10...being confident in yourself
11...accepting the hardships in life
12...staying focused with your goals
13...looking past all the bad and seeing the great things in life
14...keep ur chin up
As you can probably tell, the choices are based on the poem, which frankly, I believe is one of the best I've ever read and had been brought to me when I was sort of having a bad time, and now I read it as I believe it's one of the most true advice on how to live well.
Any entry can be focused on the ideas above or can be based on a specific situation that pertains to one of the subjects above.
RULES:
--swearing to a minimum
--must flow and have rhythm
--must rhyme in some way
--you MUST put which idea you choose to write about in your author's comments
--you may enter as many times as you like
...it's not required, but please comment on another entry
ABOVE ALL, DO YOUR BEST!!
>>keep checking for updates:
--okay, the poem isn't required to rhyme...it's nice, yes...but if you can get the flow "right"...then you can do it without rhyming
--ANYONE WHO CHECKS THIS...I'M STAYING!! HAHA, WHY? BECAUSE I DECIDED I REALLY DON'T WANT TO LEAVE YET...I ENJOY READING POETRY AS MUCH AS I DO WRITING IT
**--I'm taking my time judging the entries...it IS worth 1000 pts...but MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS, whichever you prefer....and I'll award the trophies beginning of next week...sorry it's taking to long--**
I've had some problems with my computer and I don't have access to a computer at the moment to announce the winners, however, I will announce them as soon as I can**

I love Desiderata! My father framed it for me and gave it to me on my sixteenth birthday.
I think this is a very interesting contest and I really hope I can come up with something for it!
Good luck with it! -
Sorry you are leaving, but glad you are hosting this contest. Will give it a try - lots of time to write an entry.
-
My husband was the first one to show me Desiderata. It changed his life, and then it changed mine. I will certainly have to write something for your contest. Thank you for such a wonderful subject. Hugs, Patricia

Because I haven't heard of Desiderata I am now going to read up a bit. Having inspired you enough to run a contest maybe it will inspire me to enter. I wish you the best of luck with your contest and I hope you get all the entries you desire. I am sorry to hear you are leaving AP and I wish you well in your future.
-
Thank you for showing me this poem I think it is absolutly brilliant. So full of Love and Hope. After reading Desiderata I am sure you will be inundated with entrants for your contest.
-
A very nice contest idea. I will surely bookmark this and see if I can spring out another rhyming poem for it. Thanks for the wonderful challenge.

Interesting contest! I love the idea... and it seems like the perfect farewell to AllPoetry. It's too bad you are going, but sometimes you gotta move on.

I know you may not need the site as much anymore but I can't imagine leaving it......and I am a free member right now...Being a free member on the site is better I think, that way IF you ever want back on it just to chat with old friends or get comments on new or OLD poetry you can...Of course this site has been a Godsend for me though because I was getting desperate to find a FREE site where FRIENDLY people/poets could communicate, I have been writing for 7 years and now I feel like a true Writer because of all the positive comments on my stuff....also I have been trying different styles which I never would have done without the site...AND I have written more poems off the top of my head in the 2 months I have been here then I had in the 7 years I have been writing! So I hope you reconsider but if you don't then I am sure we will all miss you so much
-
Thank you for being so inspiring!!
Desiderata is such an inspirational piece this is an excellent idea for a contest; not only the idea but the wisdoms here to share and implement into life
I will surely try to come up with something to share it seems I have much time and you perhaps to reconsider your choice to leave however if you do surely you will be missed
May your path become bright in each choice you make in life
Wishing you and yours much success in all of your endeavors

I've always been fond of Disiderata. Did you know that it was set to music? I used to have it on a record, but it was stolen years ago. It's also one of my favorite poems. Why would you want to leave. I'd say take a vacation from things and then come back, but that's just my opinion. Good luck with whatever you do.
-
I have a couple of hours till deadline. Time to get to work.. Thanks for hosting this contest - great idea. Lots of luck in your future endeavours.
-
Well I hope that you have a great time judging. I see you are leaving a little earlier than you expected. I hope that life turns around for you and you find a mature way of writing your poetry.
-
i keep forgeting to reset the deadline, will do
-
I tried the link and it wouldn't work.
Let me know... I'd love to read the poem.

-
Yay!! i am so happy you are staying!! Good luck judging!!

I wish I had seen this contest in time to enter.
Desiderada has been one of my most favorite readings since I first read it many years ago. To me it's a very meaningful writing.
Just for the record, the origination of this fine piece remains somewhat contovercial..... but to me it doesn't really matter who wrote it, what does matter is that it's become very well known and inspirational to millions of people.
A great contest, vurockdu.... and I'm glad you decided to stay on the site.
