So... I keep seeing contests with people requesting that you rewrite their poems. This is along those lines, however, you won't be rewriting my poetry. This, my fellow poets, is where you hit OldPoetry for your inspiration.
Here is what I want you to do. Go to OldPoetry.com and look up these two poets: Taliesin and Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi. Sift through their work and pick your favorite. It can be any one from either poet. But only those two poets.
Here is the catch. I don't want you to actually rewrite the poem you choose. I want to write your own that is inspired by it. You can modernize it. You can write a poem about your take on the subject matter. You can right an opposite view on the subject. Or just adopt the style the poem is in. Whatever it is that the poem inspires you to write is fine.
In the author comments, please put the following, and this is very important:
1. The poet you chose.
2. The title of the poem you chose.
3. Why, exactly, did this poem reach you more than any other?
Your Basic Rules:
1. No cursing what so ever.
2. No prewrites
3. Spell check.
4. No sticky caps or chat lingo.
5. No explicit erotica.
6. DO NOT PLAGERIZE!
7. Make sure you have the correct info in your author comments so I can reference the piece you chose.
8. You may enter 3 times per poet (meaning you can enter 6 times). But each poem must be inspired by a different poem, and only three per poet.
To ease any contest fears, I am a member of the Legitimate Contest Holders Group. You may feel free to research me through the members, and access the group here: allpoetry.com/group/4383 I suggest joining this group if you enter contests regularly (or are a legitimate contest holder) to stay up on those who are holding bogus contests, and those who are not. Also, I have never deleted a contest I have held, so feel free to visit my old contests, there are 10 of them. This is my 11th contest.
Your points are as follows:
Gold: 400 points + 4 comments on any 4 of your poems that you choose for me to read (no contest poems unless the contest is closed)
Silver: 250 points + 2 comments on any 2 of your poems that you choose for me to read (no contest poems unless the contest is closed)
Bronze: 100 points + 1 comment on any 1 of your poems that you choose for me to read (no contest poems unless the contest is closed)
You can tell me, via IM, what poems you want me to comment on AFTER you have won your trophy. And, I promise, my comments won't just be "hey nice work!" I'll give real comments.
Honorable mentions will get a mention here, free publicity!
All who enter will get a comment on the piece entered.
Get reading and writing!
Date extended to hopefully get some more entries!
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 11, 2005
- Rewards: Gold: 400
- Final notes: Nice work, everyone! I was pleasantly surprised with how these turned out. I can really tell you guys did a lot of work with these, and it paid off.
We didn't get a lot of entries, so I am not listing honorable mentions. Unfortunetly, it didn't seem to be a very popular contest, but that is ok. What we got was some of the best stuff I have seen on this site in a long time!
Points are on the way, and aside from that:
1st Place: What is Ecstasy by Polaja - IM me with the four poems of yours you want me to review
2nd Place: Return to Me by yakirati - IM me with the two poems you want me to review
3rd Place: Lament by amaranth816 - IM with a poem you want me to review!
Please allow me a few days after you IM me to review the pieces you request to have reviewed. But I should have them completed within a week of you sending them to me.
Nice work everyone!

Hugs,

I agree... this is such a great contest idea. Where you allow the entries to pull any poem of two poets for their inspiration - it gives plenty of room for creative license.
Great choice on this one. I shall visit the oldpoets you have chosen even if I can't prod my muse to give me something worthy.

This is a pretty interesting contest. I think I'll look up those poets and write something if I get time.
-
Now this is a "Legitimate Contest", give me a day or two and I will be back with my entry. I love how you mentioned the group here. This will take hold and become something that AP will appreciate in the long run. Great idea! In the words of a famous, yet failing Senator, "I'll be back!"
