What I ask is that you write a poem in any language other than English, and then provide a translation for the monolingual English speaker below. If you choose to write a poem in a given form, please don't feel that you must restrict yourself to that same form in your translation. I understand that some words do not have a literal translation, and I want you to be able to give an ample explanation for any given word within your poem.
I expect you to show yourselves trustworthy -- meaning that the translation you give is an honest one. My language abilities are restricted to the fact that I can speak Spanish and can understand most Latin-based languages. I even know bits and phrases of some Germanic languages and Japanese. Having said that, I am relying on your honest translation to best help me judge the contest.

I do not want to read about how happy/depressed you might be. You can use metaphors and personification to describe happiness, hatred, love, and depression if you feel you must write about these topics.
2) Erotica/Cursing/Sticky Caps: As I don't believe these two themes are necessary in this type of contest, I am asking you to refrain from using them. I would hope that people of all ages could appreciate your ability to write in more than one language.
3) Spell Check: I have no way of checking if you spelled words in your first poem correctly, but I must ask that you thoroughly read through your English translation. Are the words spelled correctly? Are the sentences grammatically correct? Did you use the correct word (their/they're/there or your/you're)?
4) Author's Box: To further encourage diversity on ALLPOETRY, I am asking you to read one other entry in this contest and write which entry you read and commented on in your author's box. I don't think that is asking too much, but it would demonstrate to me that you care about our interactive community AND that you have read the rules.

- Final notes: The American English is a borrowed language. I remember back in high school having to write a term paper on one word. We had to trace its etymology -- how it became a word we use every day. In my in-depth study of the Spanish language and my very brief studies of germanic and oriental languages, I am even more amazed.
Thank you for treating me with a bit of yourself with your mother (or second) tongue. I am sorry that I had to disqualify some of you for not following the rules of my contest. I would just hope for future that you would pay more attention to the rules, no matter how simple. I didn't think I was asking for much in asking for a description and asking for you to write which poem you commented on.

When I saw this was a contest that allows poems in any language other than English, I was thrilled. At last, I can submit my Filipino poems in a contest!
When I saw that this contest was by Pookiebubu (how cute), and that you know Spanish, I've really decided on joining. My Spanish poem would take a little long though... I've learned Spanish for only 3 semesters now...I hope you would tell me if there's something wrong...

Deborah, It sounds like such a wonderful idea for a contest.
Unfortunately I am not multilingual or even bilingual. I had French back in high school many years ago, but never did pursue it after that. There are many on here that can speak more than one language and because this is such an awesome contest, I believe you are going to get a lot of great entries for it. Back at the linguistics again dear. I really enjoyed your last spanish contest, but this time... I saw the contest way too late. Now dont' get me wrong... if it were another spanish contest... I'd do my best to whip up something fantastic... but the variety that is contained here... 1 day Spanish just isnt enough to beat the Dutch, German, or Aafrikans! I sincerely believe that they have already edged us Spanish and French folks
But I wish you the best with the contest... I see you already have some great entries! Great contest!

I've been taught spanish from the time I was in Kindergarten to two years ago, my freshmen year. I'm not in the mood for counting right now, but i'm pretty sure that's a long while. Because of that grand tutelage I now type before you a person who knows three very important spanish phrases--only three, but they're very important to spanish culture. For instance, "Donde esta el bano?" and "No puede cantar." and of course "Mira el pepino." At least two of those I learned from the vegetales song. What i'm basically trying to say is that i'm a spanish-speaking failure. So, I'll just watch and clap and smile at those who aren't. Unless you'd like a poem in pig-latin, which I can proudly declare I am fluent in.

hey I found a free translation program online!

but it just translates small time. (they way I learn is looking up stuff like that. through translations.) they got no japanese.
I only speak small phrases in several different laungues. but I know when I am being insulted in each laungue. and I can insult in each laungue.
not the best skill but it is funny. I also know how to say bye in almost every laungue I know. sadly I am not as good at typeing them as I am speaking them. Heck I can speak something perfectly in my sleep or when I am mad. does not mean I can do that normally. hey if you want check out that translation site. hey you can use it if you want to double check their work. I just ran across it one time. good luck with the contest.

Oh my gosh--I'm sorry. I was in stufy hall when I wrote the poem and the bell rang so I had to leave. Sorry.
But thank you for getting me to spend the time to write something original in Latin. It's probably best that I don't anyway--it's not my strong suit.
