Please read under "The Awards" to see the results of the contest. Our thanks goes out to our entire community for such wonderful support and compassion. In this contest, in a way, they are all winners....... adding to the donation as well as to the list of excellent poems.
Thanks again for all those that participated in the Moment of Silence as well as the Contest. It has been a wonderful experience of unconditional love and unity.
................................................
Please read the syndicated column allpoetry.com/Column/1501974 for background on this contest.
The subject is "how people pull together" and "how much they care" when it really counts.... ie: during disasters etc. Try to show how much people do care... and how devastating it is for families struck by tragedy. Put "hope" into it... put "love" into it... and "passion"....
You may rhyme or not. It can be form or free-style.
Please..... no anger... no rants, no cursing etc. I'm looking for poetry that is hopeful, uplifting and supportive of those families affected that is for general audience. Be sure, if you use images, they are not graphic. Thanks.
The awards:
Three 3 Month Gold Memberships to the top three places. Three hundred points goes to first place as well. And, $5 per entry will be sent to the Red Cross to assist them in what they do (with a ceiling of $500 total). The donation will be sent to Kevin for him to direct to the Red Cross under the Allpoetry.com name.
Limit: one poem per member.
I think I have it covered. If there are any questions, IM me.
Thanks,
Don
For your info if you would like to donate directly as well..........

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 17, 2005
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: As you can imagine, judging this contest was an incredibly difficult task. There were so many passionate heart-felt entries it was hard to believe.... and yet, true. Secondly, how can one judge a poem of tragedy? Honestly, it's nearly impossible. Every single poem had such compassion and feeling........ combined with hope and love. The poems that won are somehow excellent and the poems that did not, are somehow excellent as well. In a way, they are all winners in my eyes!
Thank you so much for entering the contest.... for supporting our fund raiser and moreover the folks that became victims of recent tragedies here and abroad.
We had 97 Entries which equals $485 USA bucks that is being donated this week as a result of your hard work. YaY!!!
Four members will receive three month Gold Memberships.... an extra one for fun!!!Entries [55]

great idea for a contest.

This one's not for winning, but for a little comfort. My heart aches seeing the suffering, grief and desolation.

Gift
You tell me that silence
is nearer to peace than poems
but if for my gift
I brought you silence
(for I know silence)
you would say
This is not silence
this is another poem
and you would hand it back to me.
Leonard Cohen
Just felt like it fit here. Am proud to be a part of allpoetry and hope to gather my druthers enough to write for this contest.
Thanks,
Grazia -
Oh Grazia...one of my favorite Leonard Cohen peices. it brings tears to my eyes and I do not tear lightly!
-
I do not think I have the words for such a massive destruction. However, since $5 will go to the relief; I will write something for this contest.
~genielassie~ -
What a wonderful contest, and so worthy. I'm not sure what I'll have, but for the sake of those in need, I will certainly give it a try. God Bless! Hugs, Patricia
-
I don't know what I'll have but to help out, I'm willing to do anything. And what better way than doing what I do best? (Or so people claim). I'll try my best, win or lose.
~CT -
Well I will come back tomorrow to see what I can come up with in this contest. I will enter. The victims need to know we support them
This is a great contest you are holding. I am sure you will get many entries.
-
thank you, everyone, for commenting and hopefully, entering the contest......
Don -
Wonderful contest, Don!
To ask for only positive expressions of encouragement and support is most commendable and appropriate.
"Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
Phil 4:8

This is a wonderful idea, and I'm glad that each entry is actually a helping hand towards these people. I'll have to put some serious thought into my entry before I come back here.
Good luck to all who enter, have fun judging, and God bless those who are hurting right now.

Oh wow, There are so many entries for this contest already, I don't think that I stand a chance... I may enter solely just to show how much I care but perhaps its best if I just let others post their poetry
... Great Contest Daddy, again, I admire and appreciate you tremendously, especially for such a selfless cause. Its one of the many reasons I love you
Sara
-
I think you really should enter whether you feel you have a chance of winning or not. After all your entry will mean five dollars more to the victims, so think it over.
~RoberT -
Wonderful idea for a contest and on top of getting some really good poems, you are offering help and hope for relief to the victims of this tragedy, I applaude you for that merit alone. Best of luck in yourt contest. I will come up with something if I can. be Well and Be Blessed
-
dont think im being prude when saying this but there are ppl still living and not much could be done so especially with those who are getting rescued...stay positive
good luck on the judging and sad to say ill just observe the contest rather than entering -
I see a lot of entries already best of luck in judging this. I think tere will be quite a few to go through
Mia

Thanks for organising this.

Wonderful contest HM. I've read few quite a few, you've got your work cut out for you. I entered with little hope of winning, and a great deal of gratitude for having the opportunity to express my great sadness and love for New Orleans.
Thank you for the place, the inspiration and for bringing together so many wonderful entries by fellow poets. -
I would like to try my hand at this as well and say something more for the people of LA since I haven't been able to get satisfaction out of anything else I have contributed so far. I will enter tomorrow. Thanks for having a contest like this one.
-

I've entered and must let you know what a beautiful person I think you are. Few are as generous and kind to do this and I live the idea of integrating the words that shape our lives into a little prayer of hope for all thos in suffering.

wow, this is so thoughtful of you, god bless

What an awesome thing to do. I have just written a "hopeful" one about this situation and a few other tearful ones. I'm not sure if I have another one left in me but I'll see what I can do. Wonderful of you to do this.

I'm not in this to win. My poem may stink, but at the end of the day 5 more dollars are put in to help. Try it some time. It makes you feel good.

Ack, accidentally clicked on this! Anyway, there's a great bunch of entries here. Have fun judging!

If I had time to write I would write a poem about how I'm sponsoring a couple all the way from Louisiana to Washington. I'm so excited!

This has obviously caused great interest - so many entries, this is also an interesting issue from a sociological point of view. I have read some of the entries, interesting indeed.
-
Opps, I see I already entered this contest, but in light of the fact that I hate getting my points wasted I thought that I would atleast leve you a comment. This is a great idea for a contest, it is wonderful how all the entries will contribute to the Red Cross. I have family that lived in New Orleans and some of them have come to Wisconsin to stay with my Great-Grandmother until they can get back on their feet..which by the way it seems may be sooner than expected because clean-up is going quite well..I love my family but I can't imagine how it must feel to have to leave the only place you've ever known.

This is such an amazing contest...very generous and very thoughtful. it's always incredible to see how people can work together to produce beauty out of such a horrific situation such as Hurrican Katrina.
-
Swell gesture.
-
hmmmm i'll enter if i can think of anything, to abd pre-writes aren't allowed, i have one about the hurricane
-
BlackMombaFairy, if you wrote it from your heart, who cares if it is the best or not.. It is the reason you wrote it that counts.
-
Ah crap; I just wrote up a Katrina poem, but it seems the contest has closed; no biggie--good luck judging all these entries. I'd say you're gonna need it!
-
hey, i was thinking, mabye you could send dowbn a copy of all the poems entered in this contest down with those five dollar donation. i think the victems of katrina would like to know that people are thinking about them and care and the poems i have read here show that. it would be very uplifting for them, i think. just a thought.
-
I am sad that I missed this contest but I would like to send this message:
in times of much pain
when it seems that all is lost
lovingkindness reigns
no cost
giving must be
what makes us all as one
unite in times of misery
'tis done
Bless every person Lord, let us now pray
You are right here in the midst of the storm
Keep us in your graciousness day by day
These natural disasters are the norm
Things like this will happen, that's why we're here
To let your glory shine and the world know
That with you in the midst we have no fear
We must take you in our hearts where we go
No matter how it seems love must abound
Humans are the ones who must show the good
We are equal, not some up and some down
That's the way you'd have it, I know you would
It's better for us to come together
With You in front we will brave the weather
the human race thrives
caring and sharing as one
in rough times we give

I am very surprised that my poem placed 4th
I'd been thinking in terms of $$$ to Katrina victims.
This show of support to aid those stricken by destruction was excellent.
Thanks to Haikumonk, Kevin and Ann D for the oppertinuty to help with our words.
