Contest Description:
Welcome to Abigail's contest of incredible endurance. In this contest I want you to write a poem that consists of *nothing but nouns. *The point is to convey to the reader images and feelings without using verbs or pronouns which tend to weigh down a poem when used too often.
What to do:
Write a poem consisting of only nouns. And for those who don't know what a noun is (scary thought) a noun is: a word that names or denotes a person, thing or action.
Just to be clear about this "action" thing. A noun is something that can name a verb as stated in the definition. For example "Let's take a walk" walk in this sense is not a verb but a noun.
Hints/suggestions:
You may like to experiment with concrete poetry- or poems with a specific shape that has to do with the poem. Some that have done this write sentences and then remove any word that is not a noun to create one line. Try matching nouns according to alliteration or what it makes you feel, think, smell, etc. If you have any questions at all *IM *me. I may not get back to you as soon as possible but i guarantee feedback unless something happens that I don't get it. You can also contact me on my email larmesdelamort@yahoo.com.
What Not to Do:
Don't list nouns, ex;
car
boat
water
train
that's boring and not very creative. NOTHING BUT NOUNS.
Enjoy the contest

hm....but that goes against everything I know about grammar
My teachers will be so disappointed in me, wait I am a teacher, I can do it if I want...let me get busy!!!!
-
This sounds difficult. I'm not sure the piece would make sense without verbs/adjectives...maybe I can come up with something anyway. Let's find out...
-
Wow, one of the most creative contest ideas I've seen in a while. I wonder how the challenge will be met?
-
This is going to be an intense challenge! I'll see if I can come up with something.
-
VERB: A word used to describe an action.
Well, two out of three ain't bad...as they say.
Not one for me. Sorry -
I must say this is quite creative , but I would have to really experiment a lot first ( as I do not see a good write coming out of me just using nouns) but one never knows. I do wish you the very best of luck, and a lot of great entries

I might have to agree with Topaz135. Verbs being action words, not a noun.Nouns as I was taught are(a person, place or thing). That being said. This looks funny.I'm just not sure if I'm up to it.But good luck.~~Suseann

Great idea for a contest! It might be wise to explain what kinds of words are NOT nouns as well. I see some adjectives in the entries without even opening them to read!! Some entries even use nouns AS adjectives. Also, your definition for nouns actually includes that of verbs ("action") which might mislead some people. Very educational. I love contests that challenge people and help them grow! We need it here on AP! Have fun with this!! Sheryl

Good
Very creative and wonderful idea for a contest. I'll put on my "musing cap"
and see what I can do! Best of luck with this!

Hmm... interesting idea, to say the least. It will most likely be at least a little tough, as most people here on AP are already very accustomed to using other forms of speech in their writing. I'm not entirely certain that you'll be getting any absolutely fabulous poetry, but hey, I could be wrong. It just seems to me that an excellent piece of poetry would be better suited containing a broader variety of the parts of speech. In any case, it's still a very interesting idea. The best of luck to you with the contest, dear
