Powerful Cinquains

UPDATE 2: I have read all the entries at least 3 times already. I may go ahead and judge this contest this weekend since the interest finally slowed down a little. This would be a good time to tweak what you've written if you need to or want to. I have an anonymous judge that's going to help me with this. There are so many wonderful entries so far. So anyway, unless I get another overwhelming response to leave this open...I'll probably close it tomorrow sometime.

UPDATE I hope no one mind's but since this filled up so fast, I'm going to open it back up.  I had no idea I would get 30 entries in just a few days.  I'm going to change the entry amount to 50.

There is nothing more beautiful than poetry that makes you sit and ponder well after the words have soaked in. One of my favorite forms is the cinquain. It is not easy to write something that makes you sit and ponder in such few words, but when it is done well, the results can be amazing.

This is what I want for this contest:

-Write a cinquain inspired by this picture by Alexander Volkov.  (Don't describe what the eyes see, I want to know what your soul sees).
-Metaphors and deep emotion
-No cinquain suites for this one, only one cinquain as I want to see what you can tell me in just those few words and lines.

For those who don't know how to write a cinquain, here are the rules for that form:
-5 lines ONLY. Each line has a syllable count of it's own.
           Line 1: 2 syllables
           Line 2: 4 syllables
           Line 3: 6 syllables
           Line 4: 8 syllables
           Line 5: 2 syllables

CINQUAINS SHOULD NOT RHYME (in my humble opinion).
Use good punctuation and formatting to emphasize your write.

To get a feel of the type of cinquains I like you can check out one of mine:

This is one of Nicolette's. A great example:
Blue Words.....

Rules:
-No chat speak
-No sticky caps
-Your syllable count will be checked
-Use spellcheck
-NO FOUL LANGUAGE....NONE
-If you choose to write an adult/erotica piece, please put it in the appropriate category and be tasteful.
-2 entries per poet.
-No Prewrites this time. I want you to be inspired by this picture.

I will close this contest after 30 entries or September 18th, whichever comes first.

Gold 400 points
Silver 100 points
Bronze 75 points

Honorable mentions are always possible but not guaranteed.

Enjoy writing in this wonderful poetry form. You may also go to www.shadowpoetry.com to get more information about this form.

I will read/comment each entry at the end of the contest.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on September 11, 2005
  • Rewards: Gold: 400
  • Final notes:
Wow, you guys blew me away. I can't believe all the wonderful entries. I simply had to stop and judge before it got so big I wouldn't be able to decide. Thank you everyone for being a part of this. I will do it again. I had a hard time with this contest and called in the big guns to help. Pierre Richards graciously helped me narrow this down and he and I were in total agreement with the winners. I have many honorable mentions also.

    The trophies go to:
Gold-Nicolette-September's Wreath. I asked for power and surely got it with this piece.

Silver-surfergirl-Dawn 'Til Dusk. I think I interpreted this different than maybe she meant it but I still loved it.

Bronze-daftmonk-She's Hiding-This one hit home with me. A very familiar question asked in this piece.

Well done to all of you.

Here are the honorable mentions (10 points each) in no special order:

    Delicate Vision-Zoo
    Whispers-Samplette
    Perception-crystaldust
    Forebearance-Natanya Shull
    Rainbow Petals-Donjo1030
    Time Passes-Night Hope
    Cinquain 1-KarenHarper
    Untitled-MagicLady

Thank you all for a wonderful turnout. Take a bow!

    Until next time...............
